Thomasville. Ga., I July 1, 1890. ) In the Daily Times-Enteri-rise of yesterday, is published n card, signed by a large number of the citizens of Thomasville, a majority m fact of the democratic voters of Thomasville, in which ray name is presented to the democracy of the county as a candi date for the legislature, subject to the action of the democratic party. This voluntary and unsolicited en dorsement of so large a number of the good people of Thomasville touches mo very deeply. The confidence and good will of th.osc who know,me is nbove price, nnd to the kind friends who have taken Uus ngreenble method of expressing that confidence and good will, I am. more grateful than I can express. Nothing would be more unplcnsaut or unseemly than a scramble for of fice. Were it left to me to announce myself a candidate, I am frnnk and candid in saying that I would not do so. I would not appeal to my fellow citizons for their suffrages upon the solo ground of a personal desire to servo them in the halls of legislation. But wheu I am proposed by so large and respectable a number, com posed of all trades aud callings, I am persuaded, that the choice so kindly declared will commend me to other true and tried democrats, for I be come a candidate not beenuse I have sought to become such, but because good men wish mo to serve them. It would be a happy consummation if the irritating cry of the country against the town, nnd the town against the country, could in the wis dom and conservatism of both be aba ted, by each naming n representative, and agreeing to accept nnd support the other’s choice. If it shall be my privilege to servo you, it must uot be understood that I go solely ns the representative of Thomasville, but ns one of the repre sentatives of Thomas county. I am not among those who look with alarm upou the farmer going into politics. He has been in politics fur years, ns tho glory nnd strength of democracy, and if he now comes to the front and derannds a great deal, it is not because he is unreasonable or unfair, but simply because other organized classes have been demanding aud receiving of lum so much, that under fairly ad ministered government, they were not entitled to receive. This fact was magnificently set forth in Clevelands tnrifl message, in 1887. Through intelligent effort, patience and mutual forbearance, throiigh fairness and resolute endeav or the wrongs of the producing and consuming classes will yet be remedied, but the satisfactory correction of wrougs will not be hastened by in temperance in action or speech, on the part of the farmer, or on the part of those who think the farmer wishes to do injustice. To reason together, calmly and dispassionately, is to ad vance the interests of every right cause, and to eliminate error from proposed methods of relief. The demands now made by the farmer, divfdo themselves into two distinct classes, namely state nnd national. In the first class conics their demand for the enforcement of that section of Sign of the BIGr BOOT. Office nnd Ware-rooms nt Kvntis .t Mnc- lenn's Wnre-liousc. combination, contracts &c., of rail road as will defeat or lessen competi tion ; tho improvement of our school system, and penitentiary system, and the lessening of taxation. All these demands are just, nnd proper, and should bo granted. As to tbe other demauds, the repeal of the national banking system, the adoption of the sub-treasury plan, aud the reduction of the tariff, these are matters which come solely within the jurisdiction of congress, and it would seem should lie addressed only to those who are can didates for congress. If I have mis understood this, I am ready to answer any, aud all questions, that lair miu- ded men may wish to ask. If I should be sent by your favor to the legisla ture, 1 shall vote for Gov. John B. Gordon for United Stntes Senator, and it would seem that a vote ou the elec tion of a United States Senator would be the only one a member of the legislature could cast, affecting nation al question or issues. A friend has suggested to me that my vote in 1885 on the bill relating to the powers of tho rail road commissiou might be urged against me. In reply to this all I have to say is that I stood on exactly the same platform occupied by Col. W. J. Northeu, a man always brave enough to do right, and by Col. L. F. Livingston, the president of the Stale Alliance. Col. Livingston introduced ,in the State Agricultural convention which met in Marietta, a resolution urging the legislature to pass the bill then pending before the senntc. This resolution was adopted. Col Nortbcn, theu n state senator voted for the bill, and io did I when it reached the house. My record and Col. Northen’s are therefore just the same on the question, aud both of us in advance, were endorsed by Col. Livingston, and the state agricultur al convention. .The rail road ques tion, so far as the commission is con cerned, is not an issue in state oi coun ty politics, but it is not improper for ine to. refer to the matter as I have done. Again thanking those friends who were kind enough to present my name, I am, Respectfully, 8. G. McLendon. Stuart House 1 ,Barber Shop. This first-class shop will be open tbc year round.
