G 00 p in his father’s stead, was nominated and unanimously elected oil first ballot; a good choice; but what do you think ho did, as soon as his election was an nounced? He arose from his scat in the bar, and with veiy great ecclesi astical dignity walked deliberately in to the pulpit and took his sent; don’t know what he meant, unless he thought tho conference had unanimously elect ed him a preacher. . Bro. Stubbs, of this charge, seems to feci a deep interest in his people’s spiritunl welfare, and is working and praying for, and expecting a glorious revival to follow in the wake of the district conference. G. W. II. About the District Conference. Were you ever a delegate to a Methodist conference? If not, you don’t know what you have missed. This is the writer’s first experience, and I will now say to you, and the church authorities at home, that I am somewhat like the average politician of the present day, a standing candi date, and liopo. that I will he elected next year without opposition; and I believe I will, because I am not only a good Georgia Pierce Methodist and Jeffersonian democrat, but a staunch friend of the farmers alliance. 1 am a candidate for I like the office, as the average college girl would say. “It’s awful nice.” Well, we left Thomasvillc at S:30 Friday morning with a full delega tion, and as we sped along through tho lovely pine forest, it was a grand and beautiful sight to behold tho fine c irn and cotton crop on either side, and watermelons, whew! we never saw the liku. Thousand upon thous and, and lliuy were very fine looking, uud templing in the extreme. The nice and clever people of Blakely, we are sure will not he any the worse off for having had the con- fereuce. and the deeply pious lay delegations with them, (only in ono respect.) Their larders will look after the conference, ns though n small sized western cyclone had struck them, but up to the present writing there are no visible signs of any falling oil in the commissary. Since our arrival here we have been very forcibly reminded of the first speech wo ever made, when n small school hoy, which ran about thus: "A while old lien with yellow lrgs Laid her master ninny eggs, From her nest eggs were taken To put in cake or fry with bacon.” That ancient hen stdl lives, and some of her descendants arc in nnd around Blakely, by “upwards of a good deal,'’ and afford no little pleas ure to till concerned, (and lots are concerned ns a general thing on such •ccasions). Well, we nrc here, and the pros pects for n profitable session are very good, and wc arose this (Saturday,) inorniug, donned our best clothes, and after partaking of a breakfast that would have come up to the ideas of the most fastidious, wc made our way to the Methodist church, the place where the conference was to convene; reaching there we found the various delegations on hand, all dressed up, with cheerful nnd smiling faces, all of which indicated that .they had been well cared for,and were ready for bus iness. Promptly at l) o’clock the confer ence was opened by singing by the congregation and prayer by the Bish op, or we should have said presiding elder, well let it go~so, for Dr. Hin ton ought to he a bishop, if preaching ability hits anything to do with the make up of a bishop. Ho is a grand old soldier of the cross, and a deep and profound thcologinn, and as such is entitled to the highest honors that could be conferred upon him by the church. After the conference was opened, the regular routine of busi ness begun by the election of Bro. Ry der secretary; after which on account, of the immense amount of work at tending tlic duties of the secretary, it was deemed necessary that there should bo an assistant, so our voting Bro. from Thomasvillc, Mr. K. It. Evans, wlto was acting as alternate in Metcalfe Mention. Editor TiHKS-ExTKnftisK : On Saturday Inst the colored peo ple had a dinner on the plantation of Mr. J. M. Rusltin, just across the Flotida line. During the day a quar rel, by factions from the eastern and western side of Ward’s creek, was engaged in, involving* half a hundred or more, in which bnse ball hats, clubs, knives, pistols &c played a prominent part. With one exception, none wero seriously hurt, though a good many carry bruises to a more or less extent. January James received three bad wounds, one ill the abdo men, one in the chest and one in tho head from either one of which he may die. Dr. W. B. Watkins attended the unfortunate man, and up to this writing reports hitn doing as well as could be expected, but no positive assurance of recovering. Metcalfe school held its closing exercises on Friday last. The exami nations were attended by a goodly number of the patrons nnd friends of the school, and wc arc glad to know all were well pleased with the advances made. Prof. Berry ranks second to none in the state ns a teach er, nnd with Miss M. C. English, herself an experienced teacher, and whose influence and tutoring ends not with books nnd the school room alone, ns assistant, our school is on institution of which our cit : ".eus are, and justly, proud. At night a rich programme consisting of Tableaux Charades &c., was in store, aud each and everyone was fully up to the highest expectation. To individual ise would make these notes too long, but two or three deserve s|>ceinl men tion viz: “A Prophecy,’ * 1 n composition by Miss Blanche Rushin, was exceeding ly good, nnd painted Metcalfe t»f the future in more vivid colors than here tofore her most firm believers had ever pictured. Then come Master Willie Stringer in a.speech, in therolo ot a green gaw ky school boy, and how ho was going to “lick” the teacher. Master Willie has fine conception a wonderful de livery and his rendition brought down the house. Following upon that was “The Bo gus Doctor,,, by Masters Will David son nnd Johnnie Thomas, in burnt cork. They beat Cuffie himself acting the “nigger.” The entire exercises were varied and interesting, as they had to be, to hold the packed audience and the weather so oppressively hot. This closes the first session of Met calfe school, and tho high grade to which it has nttained is indeed grati fying. 25,000 watermelons were shipped over the T. & M. Ry. Monday. Did you ever look upou that much disgui sed misery at one time? Let ’em roll, for in their stead comes tho henevo- lent clink of bright silver dollars and the silken touch of crisp bank bills. Tho first mail, under the new con tract for a route from here to Micco- sukie, arrived this a. m. This makes Metcalfe a distributing point, nnd gives us more convenient mail ser vice. If we could get mail from Mon- cello now, and have every train a mail train, wc would ask nothing more in that line nnd would be a contented people. Didn’t somebody say it was hot ? The mercury stood 100° in the shade a day or two since, nnd might have gone higher, but we were afraid to look any more. Pinson says if Hades is any hotter than the weather wc have been having, there will bo no use to send him there for ho couldn’t stand it. Politics arc so quiet you could hear a brick house fall down, but in the in terval between melon realization and cotton expectation, candidates will be given a chance to get in their ominous hand shaking.
