ALBERT WINTER. Ban. Blnn. The Ruinous Cigarette, The Constitution was asked the other day by a correspondent to give some lads showing that cigarettes are injurious.. We coudense the following from the reply: Experts say that a very low grade of tobacco is put in the cigarette, and its continued use impairs digestion and the mental faculties. Epilepsy, in- soniia, insanity and the liquor habit are all brought on by the cigarette. Several boy cigarette smokers in Rich mond were sent to the insane asylum last year. A boy in New York smok- ca cigarette until he murdered a com panion. He cared nothing about his crime or his trial. All that he wanted was more cigarettes. A youth in Buffalo cut his throat, and then puffed a cigarette while the life blood oozed from the fatal gash. Several boys in New England have recently died of catarrhal pneumonia caused by this habit. The records show in New York in the past year nearly a dozen cases of suicide, known to have been caused by the excessive use of cigar ettes. The names, dates and circum stances were given not long since in the Evening Sun. A and yet youjwill see boys, mere striplings puffing and inhaling the dead ly fumes of the cigarette, everyday. Will not parents make some effort to save their boys ? Some do not appear to care. Strange. Railroad News. Anything touching the construction of roads leading toward Thomisville is read with eager interect here, l he following from the Augusta Chronicle of Tuly ist, will be read with interest: There will be an important meeting of those interested in the Augusta and West Florida railroad some day this week. Col. Bailey is expected here and the result of this conference is promised to be of a most interesting nature to alt friends of the road. There is a delightful breeziness about certain railroad talks that insure great activity in these fields in the fall if not eailier. The Augusta and Chattanooga is assuming phase in plans that must be pleasant to Angusta. It comes pretty straight that they are more interested in Chattanooga than we are here over this road’s building. Hie next sensation promised is a combination through which the Augus ta and West Florida will secure a con nection to the north. ■v, A Word For Turner. Speaking of the rumor that the alii ancemen o the and district, would an tagonize Hon. H. G. Turner, for con gress. the Constitution says. It is sincerely hoped that tho alii ance will not antagonize Mr. Turner. He is a true friend to the farmer, and even if an allianceman should oppose him, his opponent would not be a tru« er friend to the alliance or to the farm er than he. The sub-treasury bill is not strictly an alliance measure, and the alliance as an organization does not endorse it. It is to be hoped that this body will not quibble with such a faithful, hon est and conscientious representative as Henry G. Turner on so small a matter. Coining Money at Amencus. Amrisicus, Ga., July 2.—The stockholders of liic Ainericus Invest ment Company held their annual meeting to day and selected II. C, Bagley as president and W. E. Haw kins as secretary and treasurer. The company was organized three years ago with a capital stock of $150,000. The first year it was increased to 8200,000, and the second year to $500,000. To-day is was resolved to increase the stock to $r,000,000 as soon as an amendment to the chartet is obtained authorizing it. Several dividends oflrom 10 to 25 per cent, in cash have been paid. For some months the stock has been worth $325. To day a dividend of 100 por cent, was declared, payable in money or stock, at the option of the stockholders Some of the newly issued stock sold this alternoon for £200, which is $400 for stock issued before to day’s divi dend. What Anicricus has done, nnd is doing, Thomasville might have done, The capital is here ; hut no effort has been made 10 organize and concen trate it. It is not 100 late for the town to move yet. The Times-Enter- 1’risf. has, for years, urged the im- portauce, nay the necessity, of the capitalists of the place taking some steps toward combining and utilizing the capital of the place. Do You Know of Such A Boy ? The American Teacher is in search of" a boy, and it thus describes the lad it wants: Wanted—A Boy.—A brave, cour- ageous, manly, hopeful boy; one who is not afrain of the tiuth; one who scorns a lie; one who hates deceit; one who loves his mother; one who does not know more than his parents; one who has the courage so say no, and stick to it; one who is willing to begin at the bottom of the ladder and work upward; one who thinks it would be unmanly to smoke; one who thinks an education is >vorth striving for; one who is willing to obey his superiors, one who knows hishome is L>ctter than the street; one who doesn't believe the marvelous tales told in the story pa pers, and will not read the vile stuff; one who won’t cheat in a fair game; one who won’t be a sneak, aI, d do a mean act when unseen; one "’bo won t spend every penny he earns or Bets ; one who thinks he should respect him self and keep himself in decent ap pearance ; one who won’t attack an old man because he i3 feeble and de fenseless ; one who won’t torture dumb animals; one who won’t steal; one who won’t swear; one who won’t listen to or repeat nasty stories ; one who won’t revile and jeer at drunken per sons on the street; one who won't do a dirty act icr another boy, who is too cowardly to his own meanness; one who loves to do right because it is right. Wanted—a boy, a whole-souled, ear nest, honorable, square boy. Where can he be found ? Docs he live in your neighborhood ? Is he a member of your family? Do you know him? We hope there arc a number of boys in Thomasville, who would fill the bill. Manly, brave, persevering, honest boys, is what the world wants. An Indian Squnw’s Revenge. A dispatch from Standing Rock Agency, South Dakota, says : Rain-in-the-Eace, the noted Sioux chief, ranking next to Sitting Bull in renown, and made prominent through his connection with the Custer massa cre, is lying here dangerously wounded. Unless a change tor the better soon takes place, he must die. The Indians at the agency are gieatiy excited, and tronble may follow. The chief was stabbed in the chest and side two days ago by his squaw, a handsome young woman, whom he had neglected for another young wo man. She is now under arrest. Jealousy, whether it burns neath the tawny breast ol the savage woman or flares up in the breast ol the refined pale face is the same. It says: Thou shalt have no other woman before me. Times Changes. Three sheriff*, from three Georgia counties, met at the depot in Milledge- ville last Thursday night, each having in charge a negro woman destined tor the luuatic asylum. Didn’t use to be so in slavery times, observes the Union and Recorder. Religious fanaticism and starvation are running the negro women crazy, and John Barleycorn looks afiet the negro men.—Augusta Chronicle. Yes, times have changed. Thr. old time darkey, careless aud happy as the day was long, has about passed away. The Savannah Time? denounces Mr. Porter’s count, and demands that the city fathers get up on enumera tion of their own. Other cities arc kicking quite as lustily as Savannah. Woman to Take a Hand. The following resolution was adopt ed by the National Committee of the Worlds Fair at a meeting held in Chi cago on Tuesday: Resolved, That a board of lady managers be constituted, consisting of one delegate and alternate from each state, to be recommended by the state commissioners and appointed by the president, to be known as the woman’s department of the World’s Columbian Exposition. And this reminds us I What would this country have been without wo men ? In the language of Clay, Web ster and Calhoun. “No vthere!” Then make way for woman. Give her showing in Chicago. The theory of the scientists that the sun is losing its heat, has been thor oughly disproved during the last week. Recent developments would indicate that things are warming up, rather than cooling off. The Men Who Rode With Lee And Jack8on. Col. Alfred Aldrich, of Barnwell, was in the city yesterday on his way to Savannah. Speaking of the South Carolina campaign, he says that Capt. Tillman has made many errors, but the gravest was made in his speech at Aiken, where he sends the Confederate soldier to the rear. He refers to that portion of Capt. Tillman’s speech, in which he says: “If there be those who think the men that rode with Lee and Soncwall Jackson should be kept for ward forever, there are those who do not agree with them.” In the judg ment of Col. Alfred Aldrich “this poli cy ol Capt. Tillman's is too previous by at least a decade. Belisarius is not yet begging for an obolus. The day should never come when the man- hood of the South should turn its back upon the men who carried their lives in their hands while riding with Lee and Stonewall Jackson.”—Augusta Chronicle. \ WITT’S SPECIFIC.
