County after county pronounce- fur
Nurihen.
South Georgia will be a big melon
patch next year.
Georgia democrats should stand
shoulder to shoulder.
Georgia's peach crop is said to he
almost a total failure.
Hundreds of towns and cities arc
howling fora lair count of the census.
Col. Hardeman is spoken of as a
candidate for the presidency of the
state agricultural society.
Gov. Gordon rode at the head of
thousands of ex-confederates at Chat
tanooga on the 4th.
The fourth was very generally ob
served throghout the country. Lots
of powder and patriotism were blown
off.
Idaho, the youngest sister, (scarcely
out ol her teens), makes the 43rd state.
Another star has been added to the
flag. And it was added on the morn
ing of the 4th of July.
The Camilla Clarion pithily re
marks:
A man is no friend to the Farmer’s
Alliance when he attempts tc use it as
a ladder to political office. Mark
such a man when you find him.
Valdosta gained 80 per cent, in pop
ulation from 1880, until 1S90. This
is a fine showing for that progtessive
town. The population now numbers
2,851. We congratulate our neighbor
on her rapid growth.
The eight democrats who were in
excusably absent the other day when
the vote was taken on the Lehlbach
amendment to the federal election bill
should be branded and spotted. Ab
senteeism has been—and still is—the
curse of the democratic party.
Columbus had a chicken pie on the
4'.h five feet high and seven feet
square. Good gracious, what a pie.
Many charges were mnde on the pie,
but the assailants had to fall back,
for a long time, in disorder.
'There are only two parties in this
section ; democratic and republican.
He is an enemy to his race and sec
tion who would do aught to cripple
the party, and to put this section back
under the rule of the men front whom
the democratic party rescued it.
■“Ring the bell softly, there’s crape
on the door.” The fellow who was
g«ing to reform the world in six weeks j
is dead,—Brunswick Times.
A man who starts out to reform the
World ought to die. Nine times out
of ten he needs reforming himself. O,
tio. it was never intended for one man
toJCform the world. It is too big a
job.
JCemmler has been sentenced for
the third time. This time the electro
cution is to take place the 1st week in
August. There has been a long ar.d
Jbitter fight against his execution by
electricity, but it looks now as if the
lightening would get in its work.
Speaking of the a-ttioa o! the Wash
hlgton county alliance last Saturday
the Augusta Chronicle says:
They repudiated politics today,
URt! every man stands as a democrat
to Sotc as lie sees proper.
We heartily commend this action of
the Washington county alliancemcn
to iKcit brethren throughout the state.
The alliancemen of DeKalb county
met the other day and decided by a
unanimous vote that they would not
permit politics to come in their lodge
roofas.
Who Killed the Bili-
j The Quitman Press iays: “Hon W.
II. Felton says if the Olive bill bad
passed r'•«.* last legislature it would
have cosi 1 he stale in the next twenty-
' nine year- over $12,000.000, in the
matter ol rental of the stale road.
As Major Campbell Wallace killed
that unnecessary bill, the people of
Georgia owe him a debt of gratitude
beyond words to express.”
It is gent rally conceded that bad
the Olive bill pasted, no corporation
or set of men would have risked their
millions 111 leasing the stale road.
And it may be added that had the
clause in the lease bill asking bids
from everybody been stricken out. the
lease would have fallen through. A
strong elTun was made to strike this
clause our, and also to pass the Olive
bill. Had either measure succeeded
Georgia would have lost millions.
Let it Strike.
The Washington correspondent of
the Charleston News and Courier re
cords a dramatic incident about the
force Lill:
Just as Speaker Retd was announc
ing the final vole a terriffic thunder
storm burst over the Capital City, and
forked lightening played around the
Goddess of Liberty on the dome, ac
companied by peals of thunder that
probably struck terror into the hearts
of some of the timid Republicans who
voted for the bill against their honest
convictions.
And the lightening of indignation
will play around Czar Reed and his
piratical crew ; while deafening peals
of thundering denunciations will shake
to the foundati in 'he rotten republi
can stiucturc.
Solid Sense.
We take the follow.ng two chunks
of wisdom from the Augusta Chronicle:
It is undemocratic for the Alliance
or any secret oath-bound organization
to combine inside of the party to os
tracize men who ? r e not members of
their society. This is the first time in
the history of democracy when such
an arbitrary and tyrannical test wa
applied.
* # # * # * *
When the Alliance proscribes Dem-
ocrats as unworthy of office because
they decline to support the sub-treas
ury fraud and humbug, they commit
an inexcusable political blunder and
do violence to every princple and pre
cedent of the democratic party.
The First New Bale.
Alijany, Ga., July 5,—The first
bale of new cotton was received here
to-day by S. R. Weston & Sons, from
Davis and Arnold, tenants on the plan
tation of the late P. W. Tones ; class
low middling, weight 332 pounds, I
sold to Brown, Hobbs & Weslosky
lor 15-J cents per pound. It was ship
ped by the Savannah, Florida & West
ern railroad passenger train to Ed L.
Wight, care Henry Clews, New York,
and will leave Savannah on the City
ol Augusta Monday.
The spirit of Primus Jor.es still lives
Now For Pennsylvania.
The democrats have nominated Ex,
Gov. Robert E. Pattison, for Govern
or, and Clmuiicey F. Black for Lieut.
Governor. It wi't be remembered
Pattison carried the state a few years
ago, and now that Quay's man, Dela-
mnter, 1ms been nominated by the
republicans, it is thought that Patti
son will stand a good, chance to carry
the state again.
it Has Been Accomplished.
The infamous federal election bill
passed the house, on Wednesday af
ternoon, by a vote of 155 to rounder
Tom Reeds party lash. Never was a
more dangerous bill passed by con
gress. It goes toRhc senate, where
there is some hope ol defeating it. If
it does become a law, look out for
trouble.
Georgia Republicans.
Atlanta, July 2.—The republi
can state executive committee to-day
declared it inexpedient to nominate a
state ticket, hut urged that congres
sional nominations be made. They
indorsed the election bill and con
demned southern republicans who
oppose it.

The thirty one miners who were
caught in the Hill Farm coal mine in
Pa., some two weeks ago, have not
been reached yet. Of course the poop
fellows are ail dead. A party pene
trated the mine far enough to find the
dinner buckets. The food had not
betn touched. The men were doubt
less driven beyond by the fire.
