Tjmes-Enterfrise : The Kieffer pear is growing in re pute all over the country, aud it is a matter of convenience, at least, that its name be prououced properly aud the same by all. By some, it is pronounced as if spelled Refer, by others as if spelled Kifer. Which is right ? I have a letter from C. L. Hopkins, Assistant U. S. Pomologist, who says lispln that he lias the authority of Peter ’ Kiefler, the originator of the pear and for whom it was named, for cas ing it Kifer. Mr. Kiefler pronounces his name Kifer, his neighbors call him Kifer. Thomas Meehan, high authority on pomologieal subjects, and who knows Peter Keiffer well, says it is Kifer. But Peter Kifer spells his name Kieffer. Being a word of German or igin, there is an apparent incongruity between the spelling and pronuncia- , 8 ;io a m No 53, Passenger Lv... 5 45 p in FROM MONTH ELLO. Our funner friends say that wc are having too much rr : n for cotton. So much rain is not good on the corn crop, so the knowing ones say. Mr. M. It. Northnm, of the Queen and Crescent route was in the city y:st;rday. _ It has been about one year since the water courses hnve been as full as they now are. Mr. S. A. Smith and bride, nee Miss Nellie Clark King, of New York, ar rived mi Sunday, and are the guests of Pine Summit. There arc a great many field peas, raised hi this county. The fact is, wc can grow almost n'l the good things we need in old Thomas. The lieav/ rains of Sunday and yosterdav washed up some of our streets considerably. The cliaiu gang will now he kept busy repairing the damage. The frequent announcement from the Latonin’s wagon, of "lee!” on these summer days, sounds very re freshing, but sometimes quite tantali zing. The gueaers at tlm town’s popula tion for that gold watch arc waiting with patient (?) expectancy for the announcement of the successful guess. Some parties have been offered small bonuses for their guesses, but declined with thanks. It is splendid for plantingsweet. po tatoes, and we hear of a good deal of vines being put out. The good price paid for this crop last year wi", no t doubt, induce many of our farmers to pla largely. There is no better crop made. Jane porter says that “time lliea swTtly on t.Ue wings of harmony.” Wc hope that the political time table w-’I not get a fastf" schedule for our county democracy, fcT wc dcs'-e to continue harmonious. This is thet'me ofyearforour fat.n- oi.i to haul in straw and other litter in their lots aud stables. Economy is viiate always, when wisely applied. This is as true on the farm, as in any other business. Economy in fcitili- zers is not a them y, but one that gives unmistakable results. The great quantity ot rain injures the growing crops seme, but "it is an i'l wind that blows nobody good,” is applicable. The weather, in conse quence of the showers, is much cooler. The political chess board all over the country, is being watched with eager interest. The players, the politicians, are shuffling things about pretty lively, but our people kuow that disturbed democracy means a menace to their own fireside. We were pleased to meet Mr. I’rnctt, of the Boston World, in town yesterday. Though quite a young man, Mr. Pruett is fast developing into one of tho brightest and most suc cessful young newspaper men in Geor gia. He is making the World a rat tling good paper. But grammar has little to do with the pronunciation of proper names ; it is.usago, custom, that rogu lutes that. And so ns Peter Kiefer ca'ls him self Kifer, aud his neighbors ca' 1 him K-'.’er, and the pear bears his name it’s name is Kifer, and moreover as the pomologieal magnates of the country have accepted this conclusion, and call it Kifer, wc at the provinces must submit. W- Jennings Robbed at Boston. Mr. John Davis, of this place, was robbed at Boston Sunday night. lie stopped over at the Glenn house, in that place, en route to Valdosta, and some time during the night, while he was asleep, a thief entered his room and taking his pants from a clmir^ i carried them out on the veranda and went through the pockets, securing 815 and some articles. The thief luckily overlooked his watch, which was in a vest pocket. The Committee’s Request. Wc arc requested by Dr. J. Men of unlimited means hardly appre ciate the value of just one dollar, but with the poor every dollar means so much toil and so much effort. It is a comfort to know tliat the poverty stricken invalid can dcrivt so much good from so little expenditure, when they invest their dollars in 11 It 11 (Botanic lliood Halm). W 0 McUuuliey, Webb City, Arkansas, writes: “It It I! has done me more good and for less money than any other blood purifier I ever used. I owe the eomtort of my life to it.” A. P.
