The supreme conncil of the Knights
of l’ythias of the world arc in session,
m Milwaukee, Wis. this week.
Norlhen is having a walk over.
Not even the shadow of a dark horse
appears on the political screen.
Mitchell county alliance met last
week and decided that they would have
nothing to do with politics as an al
liance.
The usual semi-annual war cloud
has appeared in Europe. It is about
the size of a man's hand. It may
grow larger.
Bol) Brewer, the noted negro out
law, was captured again (in a horn,
perhaps) near Live Oak, Fla., day
before yesterday.
They catch Brewer about once a
week.
Here is another evidence of the
loyalty of the south :
The triplets born to Mr. and Airs.
John B. Guodwyn, of Newnan, a few
days ago, have been named Red, White
and Blue.
Reed’s latest: Ousting the pic and
cake women from the capitol. These
women must be democrats. They
ought to catch Thomas on his way
to the house and force him to eat one
of their pies. That would be a just
punishment.
Speaking of the alliancemcn of
Brooks county, the News says :
The alliancemcn of the county are
divided on the sub-treasury bill, some
of the most active ones being bitterly
opposed to it, and making no secret
of the fact that they will fight it with
all their might. The same men who
are opposed to this measure are also
opposed to the alliance dabbling in
politics. They hold that the alliance is
not a political party, and that it should
not be even a party in' politics.
The Southern Alliance Farmer
says:
The Alliancemcn of the second
congressional district say that we must
have such men as L. F. Livingston in
congress.
May the second district be spared
the humiliation of being represented
by a Livingston.
The Telegraph says: Many prayers
for rain were offered in different parts
of Georgia last Sunday. The earth is
as thirsty as a Cincinnati drummer in
a prohibition town.
Down this way saints and sinners
are praying for the rains to cease

Washington, July §.—Great heat
prevailed to-day all over the north.
At Washington the maximum was 97°;
at 3:45 p. m. it was 96-°.
At New York it reached ioo c at 3
p. m. at Broadway and Park Row.
At Boston it was 91° and at Roch
ester, N, Y., 98°.
These arc also the prevailing figures
in all the reports received in the terri
tory west of the Rocky mountains.
Thirteen cases ot heat prostration
were reported here to-day.
We regret that Tom Reed’s name
does not appear among the victims—
(Kd).
Quitman's Compress.
At a meeting of the stockholders of
the Quitman Compress Company,
held this week, the company was or
ganized, by-laws were adopted, and a
board of directors was elected. The
directors are: J. S. Coles, Jr., Kid-
ridge Simpkins and S. C. Hutchins, of
Brunswick, andS, S. llountrcc, A. W.
Groover and J, W, Hopson, of Quit-
man. Mr.* Coles will be president
and Air. Hutchins general manager
of the company. '' ,
A Good Word for Merchants from
an Allianceitpan-
Mr. Jlall, the Farmers' Alliance-
Speaker, recently at Albany, Ga,, con
cluded a public talk as follows :
“I have no use lor the demagogue
who goes around over the country,
advocating the theory that the thieves
are all in town, and the honest men
all in the country. The merchants are
not your enemies. Wlurc there is
competition among country retail mer
chants jou will find no trustor com
bines to take advantage of you.
Everywhere I have been I have found
a spirit of competition existing among
retail merchants, cutting down prices
and unde-bidding each o'.her through
the columns of the newspapers, and
on printed handbills, all bidding for
your trade. In seventy-four counties
I have traveled over I have failed to
find a combine among retail mer
chants. II we drive every store out
ol town but the one we patronize, we
will have built up a trust. If we or
ganize over the country against men
who have not organized against us,
we will be a trust breeding instead of a
trust-breaking organization. Let us
not make enemies of men who are en
gaged in e legitimate business, but
keep after the trusts, and all unite for
the welfare of our common country.”
SPALDING ALLIANCEMEN.
They Refuse to Turn Their Order
into a Political One.
Griffin, Ga., July 8.—The Spald
ing county alliance met to-day and
elected officers for the present year.
They reconsidered their endorsement
of Congressman Stewart lot congress
and refused to put forward,.! candidate
for the legislature. They were oppos
ed to making the organization a politi
cal machine. This action is generally
conceded to be a good thing for judge
Stewart. There is no question about
Judge Stewart carrying this county.
Items From the News:
Losses by fire tor the first six
months this year did not exceed over
80 per cent, of the losses for the cor
responding period last year, or of sev
eral years previous. Insurance men
are consequently happy.

The publishers of “The Memorial
Volume ot Jefferson Davis” have mail-

it is pleasing to know that Mrs. Davis
will realize a neat sum from its sale

For the first time in several years
the colored race is not represented in
the West l’oint military academy. If
the colored representatives do not in
sist on appointments from civil life
there will be no more colored officers
added to the army for at least five
years.
Hit ’Em Again.
The Louisville Times strikes out
from the shoulder, thusly :
The party that stole the presidency
in 1876, through the operations of
Louisiana and Florida returning boards,
and a partisan extra-constitutional
electoral commission ; the party that
bulldozed voters in every manufactory
at the north in 1880 ; the party that
expended, through Quay, Clarkson and
Dudley $400,000 of Wanamaker’s
money to buy the presdcncy in 1888
is the party that is now engaged in
‘reforming elections by operation of
the force bill now before congress.”
Danger Ahead!
Here is a warning to warring fac
tions in Georgia. The Augusta
Chronicle says:
The blacks in South Carolina have
made a break for the registration
books. Designing men tried to or
ganize the colored voter again. There
is danger ahead to Democracy in
Carolina.
Pope Leo Very Feeble.
London, July 8, 3 a. m —Tnc
Chronicle's correspondent at Rome,
says the pope has become yery feeble
and that in anticipation ol his end, he
is preparing written instructions lor
the guidance of his successor. His
Holiness, the correspondent further
states, has revised his will and is ar
ranging for a trusteeship of the church
funds after his death.
The Lottery Bill Passed.
Baton Rougf., La , July 8.—The
lottery bill passed the House to-day,
notwithstanding the governor’s veto.
The vote stood: Yeas 68, nays 31.
