A poor little innocent, helpless child, has been named Thomas Reed, by its heartless parents. An exchange asks : “Is the sun growing colder?” Not down in this latitude, esteemed contemporary. The supreme court will meet again on the 28th inst., when a decision in the famous NYoolfolk case will be ren dered. The News and Advertiser, without giving figures, says that Albany is satisfied with the work of the census taker. This is more than most places can say. A terrific storm swept a large por tion of the Northwest, on Tuesday. North Dakota, Canada, Western New York and portions of Ohio, including Cleveland, suffered serious damage. Georflia’8 Crop Outlook. The following is taken from the advance proof of the leport on the crops of Georgia, just issued by the commissioner of agriculture: ‘ The condition of the corn crop is generally good. The general average for the state is 92 1-5. From many sections of the state come reports of dry weather. The unusual hot weather for the past three weeks, coupled with the dry season, causes apprehension for tho safety of the crop. J||y | "The general average in the State for the cotton crop is 95 8-5. The crop is reported clean generally, but a few days late. It is too soon to form an opinion or, make an estimate of this crop, with any degree of nccu racy. While it has not suffered, as has corn to any appreciable extent should the weather continue hot and dry for a few days, the damage will be apparent. WHEAT AXI> OATS A FAILURE. Wheat and oats arc almost a total failure. In many sections no effort was made to harvest them. As ogainst their loss, however, the department reports an increased and increasing interest in clover and grass. These are reported at 9t>p. The sea sons have been good for properly curing and housing these important crops. The reports from correspondents indicate a general good feeling nmoug the farmers, and that all the crops are in good condition, though suffer ing for nip. *.» ■ ' ' ■■ffihr-y,: ^ Turner Talks. Hon. Henry G. Turner has issued a dignified and unanswerable address to his constituents. He is clear, forci ble and straight forward, i hire is no dodging or cringing about it. He talks like a statesman. He gives reasons, which cannot be refuted, why the sub-treasury plan would prove a disastrous failure. lie is for any and off legislation which will relieve the agricultural classes, hut says he will Which would ming classes, (before our eekly Times- Enterprise. It should be carefully read by every farmer in Thomas county, i The News on Turner. Speaking of the services of the Hor. Henry G. Turner, in Congress, the News says: ’ “Mr. Turner is one of the ablest men in congri ss. He is admitted to be such. He is looked upon as a leader in the Democratic party. His work and speeches will compare favorably with those of any other member of the House. Many ti r.cs during his nine years’ service Georgians have had reason to feci proud of him. Aud why is it that the alliance has decided net to support him lor re- election? Has he been neglectful of his duties? Has lie proved false to his constituents in any respect? Has he failed to uphold democratic princi ples * Has he shown any lack of ability to represent his district credita bly? No: outlie contrary, lie has steadily grown in influence and popu lar estimation, and, on account of his long experience in public life, he is better able to ref resent his district and to serve his party and the south, than ever before. Why, then, is it that the "alliance refuses to suppoit him? If we are rightly informed it is because he does not approve the sub-treasury plan. But are the alliancemen sure that they themselves approve that plan ? May it not be that they do not yet fully understand what would follow the adoption of the plan ? If they should become convinced that it would do them more harm than good, would they st'll want it ? Of course not The fact that the demand for it is ac companied by the qualifying phrase “or something better’’ shows that even the originators ol it are not confident that it would be beneficial to the far mers. But while .Mr. Turner is opposed to • he sub-treasury plan, because he does not approve it, he may not be opposed to something for the relief of the far mers that is a great deal better. His entire record shows that he is. There is no doubt that he would go to any length to serve them. He is too hon est a man, however, to advocate thing his reason condemns, for the sake oftheir support. He would rather return to his law office and take up again routine professional work than remain in public life at the expense of his integrity. Mr. Turner will do all that any man can do in congress for the farmers. If any measure better than the sub treasury plan for the benefit of the farmers is proposed be will work for it effectively, if it meets with his approval. The south cannot spare from the halls of congress any of her really able men. The Republican party, in its efforts to retain control of the govern ment, has become so aggressive and and so hostile to the south that it would be a grave mistake on ine part of the southern people to substitute new men in congress for those who have experience and who have proved in many hard fought contests that they have the ability and courage to uphold democratic principles and defend the rights ot the people.
