plan,” etc. Senator Vance, wlio
trodueed the mill-treasury bill in the
Senate, and on account ot his popit
larity with tlie agricultural classes,
was lioiniimteil by Dr. Macune's paper
for the presidency, lias just written a
letter (lecturing that lie cannot sup
port the bill. Surely, in such astute
of tho case, no man ought to be out
lawed because bo doubts the infnlli
bility of the measure.
If unquestioning support of the
sub-treasury bill” is to be prescribed
ns the indispensable prerequisite to a
nomination for congress is this dis
trict, then will the same measure lie
applied to the candi late of the Dem
ocratie parly for the next speakership
of the house of representatives? Our
people have recently bad very vivid
and lurid illustrations of the great
powers of 1 lie speaker. The present
occupant of that high place lins done
more to alarm freemen and to mould
and advance measures for their op
pression than was ever done by any
man in this country in a time of
peace. If the proposed sub-treasury
bill is to lie applied to members who
arc to vote for a man as lii« successor,
will the same test lie applied to our
nominee for that most important of
fice? The speaker can do more in
this or the next or any other congress
for the advancement of the bill, than
any other representative. According
to the inevitable logic of the case, the
advocates of the bill, if elected on
that mcansure, would be forced to
vote for a candidate for speaker who
agrees with them in opinion on this
scheme of relief. Those votes would
betaken from the only opponent of
Mr. Reed who would liavc nnycbnnce
of success. Can any Southern patriot
—to say nothing of party—afford to
help him?
Within the limits of this article I
cannot undertake to repent the in
superable objections to the sub-teens
tirv bill. Those objections have al
ready In-on published in various wavs,
nnd are easily accessible to all who
will investigate the subject. I jiope
to be hide to present them to my con
stituents whenever I have the oppor
tunity.
It is admitted that wo need more
money for I lie easier transaction of
our growing business. We do not
need more money of an inferior kind,
such as (lie projioscd measure offers.
No class of (lie community is more
interested in a sound currency than
farmers and laborers. TI10 inferior
money always finds its way into their
hands more easily than good money,
nud the good money is then honrded
by bankers and others from oircula
tion.
There is a ‘‘better way.”. We
should have more ejlvpr. Even
tho present limited coinage of that
metal—which was all that Democratic
representatives could force from a Re
publican senate and Republican pres
ulent in 1878—lias added over 8800,
000,000 to the currency. IVc ought
to have a repeal of the prohibitory
tax on State banks, so that the Re
publican party cannot have the power
to control the currency for their own
purpose, and so that the state can pro
vide, from time to time, for periods of
stringency. 1 do not sec why the
state of ( Georgia could not create banks
and safely invest them with power to
issue bills upon this basis of state
bonds, nud gold and silver. We ought
to reduce taxation so as to leave 111 the
hands of the jieoplc 8100,000,000,
which the government could spare
without any embarrassment whatever
to its necessary operations. We ought
to reduce expenditures, so that the
profligacy engendered by the system
which takes immense sums from all
thc’peoplc and bestows them on one
section, shall cease. These sugges
tians need not now ho enforced by ar
gument. They are too plain to re
quire illustration. They can lie sup
ported by all democrats, and would
bless all classes alike.
But the question which, in my opin
ion, rises above all others now, is the
next speakership ! We can have no
adequate fmnncial relief, as all kuow,
as long as the office is administered by
the party now in power.
The republican party jeered the
sub-treasury scheme when Mr. Bland
the other day, alluded to it as
evidence of a demand for more mon
ey. But, at last, it is nothing compa
red with liberty! All that we love as
a people, and all that wo hold dear is
in jeopardy.
The man who would divide our peo
ple now, or array ciass against class, is
not entitled to the confluence ol those
who this fall may be tho victims of
strangled elections and arbitrary pow-
The principles of the Alliance as
submitted to Mr. Cleveland I can ap
prove as heartily as lie did. The na
tional hanks I have always opposed,
and voted against the extension of
their charters But if I stand in the
way of harmony, I am ready to be
sacrificed. But at a time when the
onjy party that ever oppressed the
people is united under a bold and ag
gressive leader, on the most, horrid
scheme ot dominion that party ever
attempted, let not the party of the
people be rent in twain as in 1800.
