Tho colored clement predominated
on the streets yesterday. Marshal
Spair, Sheriff Hurst and the police
force of tho city, preserved good
order. The crowd wrs a very orderly
one, so fur as wc heard. It has been
very common for these excursions to
go to other places and indulge in
fisticuffs, shooting and cutting scrapes.
An attempt to follow this example
in Thomasv'lic would prove very dis
astrous to tho participants. Wc have
an orderly, Jaw abiding colored pop
ulation here, and they would quickly
aid in suppressing any troubles insti
gated by a reckless set of excursion

Let Us Have Peace.
Editor TuiEK-Kxrr.ilhusk:
When will the colored man learn to
let the white people’s business alone:
It appears in the Atlanta News, ed
red by Cul. W. A. Pledger, that six
more nc.-’orskal been killed by white
folks Wlmt is the cause of this con
tinued killin'* * of negroes? In nine
cases in ten, it is the negroes own
fault. In the Fearses case the no-
gri cs should have left the boat alone,
They would not and were k :, l«d.
In tho Arkansas case, the man who
carried those poor people out there,
ought to he horsewhipped. After
they went out there, they should have
carried out their contracts, before tin
(lei caking to leave. After they were
followed, r-ked to return and carry
out their contracts, (and tlicy agreed
to do so), they were cowards to open
gun fire on their employers, shooting
them in the back. The whites turned
on them, and five wfc'rc killed.
Colored people, let the white bilks
boats and emigration agents alone.
•Stay on (lie hank and fish, until y.,u
have a boat of your own, and slay in
the country where you are, until you
are able to pay your own way oil, and
hack, if you don't, like a country.

If every farmer in the comity would
adopt this rule, Thornes county farm
ers would soon lie the most prosper

this policy. It is the only com sc
which will innke the farmers thor-

do it. Tiicre’s no doubt about it.

When the long procession of color
ed excursionists moved up Jackson
street from the depot yesterday, it was
noticed that Sheriff Hurst led the
procession. Blit lie was not alone,
With a grip that never loosens, he
had one Bill Jones by his side. The
festive William went up to Albany on
an excursion last week, and while en
route back, stole a watcli from Mose
Wilson, an industrious colored man of
Thomasville, who had joined the
party. Mose spotted his man yestcr
day morning, and “Gus” slipped the
nippers on him in a jifly. , It is just a
way lie lias of doing. The offense was
committed in this county. Jones at
present, is sojourning in the new jail
ami is being fed at the expense of the
county. To morrow lie will appear
before Judge Mitchell. There it will

The police arrested a negro girl yes

with the excursionists yesterday. But
she didn’t. She >s charged with disor

The ofiiceis pulled a negro hoy
yesterday afternoon for stealing a
plug of tobacco. He will chew it in

Buried the Hatchet.
The editor of the Arizona Kicker,
according to the Detroit Free Press,
has been placated:
Settled at Last.—As will be no
ticed elsewhere in the regular court
proceedings, the legal trouble between
the editor of the Kicker nnd Professor
McCall lias at last b:en settled and an
amicable understanding arrived nt.
Tho professor came here about two
years ago, and being in hard luck har
rowed our only Sunday shirt and 50
cents in cash, nnd later on refused to
either return the same or recognize
our claim.
Wc posted him ns n dead beat and
he sued us for 850,000. Wc proved
him a bigamist and he fired two shots
at us in front of the postofficc. We
al vised lynching, nnd he was laid up
for a inontli in the attempt to horse
whip us.
The professor instituted no less than
five suits against us, and on -everal
different occasions planned our assas
sination.
Day before yesterday, while the
professor was laying for us with a
shotgun nt flic postofficc, he was run
over in a stampede of mules.
Wc were the first to reach him nnd
render him aid. He was carried to
the Kicker office in an unconscious
condition, nnd it wnB half an hour
before lie came to. Mutual friends
seized upon the occnsion to settle the
trouble, nnd their efforts were suc
cessful.
Wc now desire to annouuce in
italics that the professor is nn honest,
worthy gentleman, possessed of a fine
voice, nml well qualified to teach the
divine art of music. On the other
hand, lie subscribes for the K’ckcr,
paying in advance, of course, nnd ad
vertises to the extent of 824 per year.

A New Arctic Expedition.
Another expedition is to set out to
try to rcacii the North pole. This
time the attempt wi<! he made by the
Norwegians, who are a good deal near
er to it than we are, and by reason of
their life in a very severe climate
ought to he able lo stand service in an
arctic search better than explorers
from a milder latitude. A liberal ap
propriation for the outfit of the expedi
tion 1ms been voted hv the Norwegian
national assembly and the work of its
preparation will begin at once. A
h»at of 170 tons will he constructed
with n special view to fitness for this
service, aud will lie stocked with pro
visions for five yeau. The expedition
is to lie under tho guidance of a hold
Norwegian explorer, Frithjof Nansen,
w lio lias had considerable experience
in. arctic searches. He believes lie
wi” he ready to start one year from
next February aud is confident that
he w !, l advance further north than
any of his predecessors. The theory

strong evidence in favor of the exist
ence of an open polar sea.—Telegraph.
