JOHN TKIPbGTr, Itii*. Man. 8 00 12 00 20 00 35 00 Augusta gained 2,000,ia population by a recount. It looks like Tillman will sweep South Carolina. The revolution at Iluenos Ayres has been crushed—so the dispatches say. The Enquirer, Cincinnati, has coined a new word, “Spissitude.” Is ext. Harrison and Wanamaker are doing one thing which '.lie country should approve: They are trying to exclude lottery letters from the mail. Dogdayssetin on the 29th. Now every dog has his day; that is ii there is enough days to go round. This, however, on account of the large num ber ot dogs, leaves the matter in some doubt. It is a noticeable tact that, as a rule, the colored men of the south are oppos ed to the lorce bill. They do not want the kindly relations now existing between the whites and themselves dis turbed. J. M. High & Co. offer $1,000 for the most beautiful woman in Georgia, to represent I.alla Rookli, on their float, in the great midsummer festival in Atlanta. Here’s a chance for a Thomasville girl. She lives right here. His Koyal Highness, Prince George of Wales, a scion of nobility, a grand son of Queen Vie, is soon to visit this country, lie will be favorably im pressed with this country—if be docs not fall into the hands of the snobs. A peach orchard in Maryland which last year yielded 51,000 bush els of fine fruit, exhausted itself in producing just one peach this year. This is the case with many orchards in Georgia. The peach crop in this state is almost a total failure. Within the past few days, Col. Ncs- bit has forged to the front, and it would not surprise anyone if he cap tures the commissionership ot agricul ture. Henderson’s vote in his own county has hurt him all over the state. The following graceful paragraph is from one of the rankest Republican sheets in the North, the New York Press: "Mrs. Cleveland is said to have gems worth 850,000, but as a gem of a woman she shines brighter than all of them.” One of the questions oi the hour is: Will Col. Rutherford carry—or can he carry—Woolfolk’s case to the Supreme Court of the United States? Col. Rulherlord has made a most determin ed legal fight for the man, and he will will leave nothing undone to save his neck. There is war between Atlanta hack' men ; and now the average Atlantian calls a hack, if he is only going around the corner. They used to charge 75 cents an hour, for each person ; now they charge 25 cents, and you can ride a single trip, anywhere, for 15 cents. Pensions, pensions, pensions; stop the steal. Competent authorities pre dict that the pension roll will rise to three hundred millions within the next five years. And this must go on f-r a generation to come The country, north and south, should rise up en tnas'c and protest. President Harrison has discharged Albert Hawkins, the White House coachman who was appointed by Preaidcut Grant and has driven the carriage for all the Presidi-nts since. It is explained that Mrs. Harrison 1 a white coachman. ,86!*?*' A Big Trio. The Macon Telegraph says: “Everybody in Georgia ought to be glad that Hon. Henry ti. Turner’s nomination for another term in con gress is now assured. Mr. Crisp 1ms no opposition, and tho re-election of Mr. Mount seems to be assured. These three Gcorgnins are among the most valued and most influential lead ers of the Democratic party in the House, and the state needs the ser vices of every one of them in con gress." Trust the People. Trust the people. You may fool them lor a while with wild theories, but they are going to get even with those who impose upon the credulity, and to repudiate those who deceive them with false promises to obtain offices. The men wl.o siand upon principle have nothing to fear in the long run. They are sure to be vindi cated.—Augusta Cbtonicle. Annie Rooney has applied for a pension. Put her on the retired list. Some one has perpetrated the fol lowing on Annie and Joe : She's a chestnut, so is Joe; I low you stand it, I don't know, I wish they were married, How happy I would be It'they were with McGinty At the bottem of the sea. Wlmt if the North, to retaliate, should boycott the Georgia waterrail- yuu? Horrible thought. Well, it would bo a blow at the Northern doc tors. It is stated as a singular circum stance that the death of Gen. Clinton 11. Fish, the great Prohibitionist, re sulted from a cold caught at a place named Coldwater. »■«.» — According to a tabulated statement, Henderson has 83 votes instructed for him, Nesbit 71 and Ilunnicut 24. There are 42 votes instructed. This looks like it vas going to be close be tween Nesbit and Henderson. The responsibility of putting in George N. I.ester in place of Clifford Anderson as Attorney Geueral of Georgia will be a very grave one, whoever assumes it.—Euquirer Sun, Columbus. Lamar's Diarrhn-a Mixture should lie kept always in the bouse fur cates of emergency. Chloraltzed. The Rev. Henry Howren, of Cliailes- j ton, commonly known as “the reform ed journalist,” had three appointments to preach here ycslerdiy, buthe fail ed to come to time. There was some thing the matter with him, and as lie entered Walker Street church to fill the first appoint ment, it became apparent. He walked in, sat awhile and then went out, and it was announced that he would not preach. To friends, Mr. Howrcn slated that he was suffering from the effects of chloral that he had taken. He said he had been working very hard of late and was not well when he left home in Carolina. He had taken chloral at different times since leaving home, and the drug had so upset his mind that he could not preach. Mr. Howrcn was taken by a friend and carried to Decatur where he lies this atternoon suffering with consider able fever. A special from Atlanta, the Tele graph, under date of the 28th. inst. gives the above information. Mr. Howren’s South Georgia and Florida friends hope to hear of his rapid re covery. He Is Out There is something lo our mind pathetic in the following brief letter of (no. Clements to his ungrateful con stituents : Rome, Ga., July 28, 1890. To the democrat* of the iScccnth Conijre**- ional DUtrict: I respectfully announce that I have withdrawn from the contest for your nomination lor the office of represen tative in the fifty-second congress. In this connection permit me to ten der my sincere gratitude, not only to those supporting me in the contest, but to the people of the district for their confidence and support in the past. Very respectfully, [Signed] J. C. Clements. Clements went down before the sub treasury craze. It has sent many a noble man lo the rear. And now the national query is: Can those who succeed these trained statesman do any more than those who have had to step down and out have done ?
