Tliumnsville is watching the rail- re nd chess hoard with keen interest. Mr. Henderson is getting things about the Troy Laundry in good shape. J)r. \V. It. Smith a successful young physician of Chastain, was ill the city yesterday. Another mntch by the Thomasville Chin Club will lie shot The time has not been fixed. It will only cost you one dollar and eighty cents to go lo St, Simon’s Is land and return. The usual contingent of commercial gentlomam will spend to-morrow, Sunday, in the city. Things will bo lively about tho Rod Front Grocery s'.ore, to-day. Tho Pringles keep things moving. The Timks-Entkrfrimk job olficc is the most complete of any in ibis section of country. The farmers of Thomas county arc more inteiestcd just now in their crops than in polities. Thomas county does not need any federal supervisors to help hold her elections. We can attend to this duty down here ourselves. Thomas county lias more progressive and prosperous towns than almost any county in the state. They arc hummers. The very fact that our job depart ment is always crowded with work, is evidence that we do good wqrk at pliegp rates. Prop iu to Mcltae Bros, and sec how cheap they arc selling things. Their stock must bo closed out by the first of September. The Hoard of Health arc keeping, so we understand, a close watch on the siiuiinry condition of the town. Keep it up, gentleman, until frost. ’Tis said that a certain gentleman who is oir for the summer, will not return ns lie left, in a state oi single blessedness Particulars Inter. Only 83.30 to Tybcc and return. Tickets sold to day, and good until Monday. Do you waut to go to Sav annah? This courtesy would ho duly appreciated'. l)r. W. R. Smith and W. B. Dukes, ol Chastain, Ga., will leave in a day or two for-a ir p to Washington. They will spend several days in the nation’s capjtal. Mr. John T. Register, of Colquitt county, was in town yesterday He reports politics pretty lively in that county. A Mr. Ogden has bedn en dowed by the alliance for the legisla ture, while lion. John A. Alderman, the present member, is in the race. It is a significant fact that the pear market broke down in New York the day upon which Join) Chastain’s slijp- lucnt reached the metropolis. John thinks his shipment smashed the mar ket ; he shipped ten crates to the great city. To Parents and Teachers of Thomas County Among tho many helps to train up a child in the way he should go, next to the Inspired Word, is proper in struction in the science that treats of “the house we live in,” which Isreal the Psalmist, tells us is fearfully and wonderfully made. The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union not only labors for the aboli tion of the saloon, but by works pre ventive, would turn the tide of hu manity away from them. In no way can this be more effectively done than by the united efiorts of - parents and teachers, hence, the effort to put into their hands scicntifis temperance text hooks. Temperance as taught in thirty of the States, would,if parents and teach ers faithfully impressed the minds of those interested to them, raise up au army as strong to defend the cause as were tho patrons of old to defend the Pass of Thermopylae. The danger of intemperance in eating and drinking, especially the great danger to soul and body from the use of intoxicants would if early taught, preserve, health and deter thousands from looking upon the “wine when it is red when it giveth its color aright” for the scr pent at the bottom would ever be present to warn of dang< r and death. We would call special attention to the scries of books published by Van Antwerp, Bragg & Co., of Cincinnati. H. W. J. Ham, Esq., of Atlanta, is their agent tor Georgia. •‘The house I live in,” for the pri maries. “The Youth’s Temperance Manual" will interest the lads and Ins- sics and “Guide to Health” as a phys iology is unsurpassed. We have the hearty endorsement of cverv person to whom we have sent them for inspection. Prof. J. E. Ba ker, of Young Fcmnlc College, says: “I give them my hearty endorse ment. Written in a stylo simple and fascinating, they cannot fail to arrest the attention of the young, aud awa ken within them an interest in a study too much neglected in our schools.” Prof. Lovcjoy, of tho South Geor gia College, says: - “I find them excellent in every re spect. I have been impressed for years that Hygicun and Physiology should be made a part of every school curriculum.” Professors Wight and Glenn, of the Cairo High School, gave their highest endorsement by introducing them in to their school. Somo of the private schools arc tcnching them. Wo most earnestly commend these hooks to the careful consideration of all who are interested in the youth of our state, not oqly parents and teach ers, but to every person who loves God, Home or Native Land. Mr. William Augustus Overton, the colored gentleman, who, in a thought less moment, unconsciously and un wittingly abstracted the watch of Mose Wilson from the latter's pocket, recent ly, was hauled up before Judge Mitch ell yesterday. After hearing the case, the court, in its most impressive man ner, said: “William Augustus, this court sentences you to pay a fine of fiity.five dollars, or work on the chain gang of Thomas county ten calendar months.” And William Augustus was led away sorrowing, led back to the jail, where he will be clothed in stripes and a spade in his hands—unless tho aforesaid fifty-five good dollars shall be promptly forthcoming. William Augustus will in all probability “fling ’ dirt. The way ol the transgressor is hard. And Mose Wilson, though the watch is gone, is happy. . Messrs. Sanford and Heeth return ed from Fort Valley yesterday. They report an interesting meetjug of the State Horticultutal Society, and a good exhibition of Georgia fruits, considering that the fruit crop in this state has been almost a total failure. The gentlemen were iu tho accident this side of Ochlockonec, but escaped with a heavy shaking up. Fortun ate. Luther Thompson is an expert at almost every kind of work to which ho puts his hand ; he has placed a window shade in the front wiudow of the Times-Enteki'RIhk business of fice, covering the large glass, which is a perfect piece ol work.
