Marianna, Fia., shi|'[)td two new bales, the first ol me season, on the 5 h f _ Colunibtis asks for a recount ol the census, ^upt. l’ortcr will look after the matter. The Senate is pegging away at the tiiffifl bill. Page 24 of the bill was reached yesterday. Dense clouds of grasshopper, were seen in Minnesota on the 5th. I hey wire high in die a r and flying tomb ward. A dispatch lrom St. Louis says that not since 1853 has St. l.ouis county suffered from sucli a destructive and protracted drought as at present. Hie official rough count of the cen sus bureau shows the population of Philadelphia 10 lie 1,044,8114. Jhis is about 231 per cent increase in tlie past tcu years. Four western senators, i’.umb. Paddpck, Ingalls and Mandcrsun, liaiiie kicked clean out of the tariff t:aces, and are now voting with the democrats against the M Kinley bill. Cleveland's medicine is working— even am mg the staunchest republi cans. Senator Hoar is credited with the following lrnutic utterance: While I favor passing the tarili bill, sooner than tint this Congress should not pass the Federal election- bill I would prcler to see every niauufac turing establishment in Mnssachuictts burned to ashes, and the people of that State required to labor in callings at which they could not make more than 50 cents per day and lie required to live on cod fish. Force Bill Men Glum. Washington, Aug. 5.—Senator Hoar returned to-day to fiud the force bill almost in its grave. Johnny I)a venport and Henry Cabot Lodge, who hnd preceded him here and bad been examining the situation, had nothing but discouragement for him. •Speaker Feed’s stout declarations were the only comfort he found, and they were not very strong, for, al though by revokiug leaves of absence, sending personal telegrams and dock ing the salaries of absentees lie can keep the House at something like a quorum, be could not keep a quorum in the Senate even if lie tried, any more than he could make the Senate adopt his lilies. The independent ut terances of Senators I’iumb and Teller, for which they were thanked by their constitutciits in numerous telegrams received by them to-day, trouble Sen ator Hoar greatly. •riiK mix’s oni.y i.iiANi i:. The only chance the force bill hud was in a change of the rules, and that could only lie brought about by keep ing the republicans solid. Senator Hoar never did like Seimtnr l’lumb, whose rough tongue has often wound ed Hoar's sensibilities, lint lie likes him has than ever now. Kcprcscnta- live Lodge was obliged to admit this afternoon that there was slender chance of passing the force bill this session. ‘‘It will be passed,” lie said •'This srsiion ?” was asked. “Well, not uulcss tlic session lasts till March 4, at the piescut rate.” Hut Lodge hopes to see closure ap plied in some form l>y the republicans of the senate so as to press the hill through this session. This is the only hope of the force bill men, mid it is a most forlorn one. luouun Items of Interest From an Old Time Paper. I lircugh tin kmdtiiss of Mr James F. Evans we Rave been permitted to clip the following items from a copy ol Hie Federal Union, published in Mil. ledgeville, Ga., on June 20, 1854. Ihcpapirw.is addressed to Win. G. Ponder if Thomasville. It was dim and discoxrid with age. The make up of ilu: paper illustrates the change mat has taken place in the kind of mailer prepared and given to the pub lic ilieii and now very forcibly. Near- iy every article was long, mostly edi- iur.al, of from one to two columns in ieiigih, with no locals to speak of, and a speech ol Stephen A. Douglas in wr.ich he discusses the Kansas and Nebraska : ill and the Missouii Com promise is published in fu'l. There vuie nut many miles of raiitoad in Georgia then as the following state ment shows: The railioads in operation in Geor gia are—Western & Atlantic, [owned by the State,] 139 miles, Georgia Rai - road, with branches to Athens, Wash ington and Warrenton, 232 ; Central Kailiojd, 192 ; Macon and Western, 102; Atlanta and West Point, 80; Suuth Western, 80; Waynesboro, 52; Muscogee, 20; Estonian, 21; Mil- ledgeville, 17; Rome, 17; East Ten nessee and Geoigia, 16; Brunswick and Fluridafaoo miles of this railway is under contract,] 14—the total num her of miles in opeiulion, 1,001. The following shows that the weath er ivas very much the same then as now, though in these days of railroads the high waters seldom prevent a judge troni reaching his courts : In consequence of the high waters the creeks between Waynesboro <J lloltnesvihe, the impossibility of crossing them with safety, Judge Love lias adjourned Appling Court on the 27th and Coffee to the 31st days ol July next. Parlies interested should lake due notice. The recent heavy rains have swollen the streams and nearly inundated the whole country below tins. We heard many complaints from farmers of too much ram, and saw practical evidences of the same on many places where the corn was dying. We fear much dam age has already been done to the grow ing crops and if the rains continue many days longer, the consequence will be far worse and more injury result from them this year, than from, the drought ot last year.—Thomasville Watchman. Party spirit seems to have been about as high then as it well couid be though it looks to us now as if they had very little to quarrel over. But see the following : Henry Ward Beecher says he means to vote against the Nebraska bill though the ballot box should be placed in the jaws of h—II. To this the-Wheeling Argus replies, that every rnan has a right to vote in Ins own precinct. A party called Know-Nothings, has lately succeeded, ivith the aid oi the Whigs and Maine Liquor Law men, in carrying the municipal elections against the Democrats, in W. shington citv, Philadelphia, and other places of less importance. “A Squad of Weaklings.” The Georgia campaign is watched with great interest at the North. The failure of trueaud tried members to lie reuoninated by the Democratic party lias created considerable sir- prise, and lms moved The Spiingfield Republican to exclaim: There seems to be a disposition abroad to replace many of the South- cru members ot the House and sena tors of the most conBpiciuous service and ability with men who, ns a rule, have bad uo experience in public life; im n who, in comparison with the sit ting members and senators, arc of the third or fourth class in ability; men wedded apparently to ludicrous fads in legislation or constitutional law; or they are cheap demagogues, who are using the rural population for their own selfish purposes. Every patriotic citizen, regardless of party affiliation, must regret the possible tllect of this, and the South ern people will live to bitterly icgr^t their folly if they permit claw preju dice to result in putting a squad of weaklings in the places now filled by tlic-ir ablest men.
