Late Reports From the Shooting
The Guards found the walking
good, goiug to the shooting ground?,
but there was ratber more of it than
they needed.
Sergeant Will Taylor thinks that
the target was too small to start with,
and then the judges ruled out nearly
half oi it.
The boys all say that they want a
bigger target next time. They will
use the regulation paper targets the
next shoot, which will ho Thursday,
August 21.
Corporal Grausman said the reason
lie did not beat his own score was be
cause he trieil at first to shoot from
the right shoulder as required by the
regulations, and kept the left eye
open, but wbcu they told him he
could shoot from the left shoulder lie
was nil right.
The next target shooting will be
for the company medal presented by
Mayor II. W. Hopkins. The winner
will bold it for one year, aud it will
then be contested for again. The
medal is quite a handsome one, and it
will be hotly contested for by the
company.
Recovered his Money.
Mr. L. A. Borders, a traveling
man from Savannah, who was at the
Gulf day before yesterday, was quite
worried about a ?15 that lie had left
on the sleeper coming down from
Savnnnnli, until lie received a tele
gram from Dupont saying the money
was all safe. The particulars arc cs
follows:
Wednesday night lie took a sleeper
out from Savannah, and thinking to
place his purse where it would he safe,
put it under the mattress of his herth.
When tlio train arrived at Dupont,
where lie had to change ears for
Thomasville, he forgot the money,
and did uot remember the incident of
placing his purse, until the train had
reached Quitman. lie related his
talo of woe to the conductor, who
telegraphed the porter, ami aguit at
Live Qak, the dostiuatiou of the
sleeper, the circumstances.
All day Thursday the loser was
kept iu suspeuse, and was glad to re
ceive his money that night.
Last November at a meeting of the
Traveling Mens’ Association, in At
lanta, an effort was made tq induce
the railroads to have tilings safe iu
the Pullmnu cars fur the convenience
and safety of traveler’s valuables.
Only a short time siuce a Savannah
Pullman car porter was arrested and
convicted of stcnling from passengers.
Wasteful Advertising.
Discriminating merchants long ago
abandoned tho circular and gutter
snipe methods of advertising. For the
nmount of bard cash it takes to fair
ly circulate 5,000 hand bills you can
place an attractive ad. in a reputable
and well circulated newspaner in a
way to bring many times the returns
that can possibly come from the older
and nearly obsolete methods ot an
nouncement.
People buy a newspaper to read it;
they do not buy or want tho gutter
snipe, and they don't read it. Xot otic
person iu ten ever glances at the dodg
er that is thrust in his hand at the
street corner before lie consigns it to
the gutter. He only consents to read
it at all out of sympathy for the poor-
fellow who is making a more or less
honest cflort to get rid of liis armful uf
hills; and the one fellow iu ten who
does look nt tire dodger, first sweeps
the liori/.on witli Ids weather oyc to
sec that no one observes bint reading
the affair! An announcement read iu
this way—or not at all—isn’t going to
startle any one by the magnitude of
the returns. —Exchange.
The Minutes of the Guards, 1874.
Wo linvo been presented with an
old book containing the minutes of
the meetings of the Thomasvi Ho
Guards in 1871, aud the orders under
which they occupied the Court House
for two days in April, '74, as a guard
to sec that the execution of four mur
derers was allowed to proceed without
the interference that seemed to lie
threatening at the time.
The orders of the day arc given and
a program for the government of the
company while in camps. Every
thing passed vpry quietly, anil they
were relieved from duty without hav
ing anything more disagreeable than
a night’s guard duty. There arc sev
eral other interesting matters in the
book, especially to those who were
members at that time.

Dr. IF. //. IVhitehrml:
Dkaii Sir—At your request I will state
my case. Some years ago I contracted
malaria in its most violent form while liv
ing at Newark, X. J. I consulted various
physicians and took numberless preparations
recommended as “sure cures,’’ but it stuck
tome like a brother—or more like a mother-
in-law*. I finally came South, nnd while
here tried new remedies, said to always cure
malaria, nnd it still stuck to me, and you
know* the broken-down condi’ion I was in
when I cninc to you. You put .no to taking
your P. P. I*. (Prickley Ash. Poke Root and
Potassium), and I improved rapidly, and am
to-day in as good health as I ever was—in
fact better. As a remedy fora broken-down
constitution it 1ms no equal.

Bright’s Disease.
This insidious ailment, if too long neglect

David llunkle, Cullman, Ga., writes: “I

for Bright’s disease, hut it did me no good.
I then took B. B. 1L, which relieved me.
My appetite is restored and I urinate with
out pain.’*
J. A. Maddox, Atlanta, Gu , writes: “I
h id great trouble ill passing urine which
was filled with sediments. My back and
loins gave me much pain aud I lost my up-
petite, strength aud flesh. I became nerv
ous and unable to sleep soundly. Two
hollies of B. B. !l. gave me entire relief.”
Thomas Williams, .Shoddy, Temi., writes:
“I was troubled with severe kidney com
plaint and confined to my bed. Six bottles
of B. IS. B. made a well man of me.’’
