Its story dates back to the battle of Ilucna Vista. Feb. 23. 1847, when the whole Mexican army, under Santa Anna, de filed around a mountain pass and sum moned 5,000 Americans under Taylor to surrender. The reply was, “Gen Taylor never surrenders," and at it the two went to fight it out. In the terri ble battle that followed Taylor was victorious, and thereby won the presi dency for himself. But many among the flower of his officers were killed among them young Harry Clay, I lest son of Henry Clay. Theodore F. O’Hara, his i nmortal poem, “The Bivouac of the Dead.” The body of Col. O’Hara himselt was brought to Frankfort, Ky , in Oo tober, 1874, and buried. On this oc casion his own poem was recited above tils remains and those of two other officers who were laid to their final rest at the same time in the Frankfort cem etery. The poem has been quoted at a hundred soldier funerals.
