Romance of a Thomas County
Girl.
Tlic Macon Telegraph of Thursday
contains the following:
Mr. John Wilberforco Wright and
his bride sat all day yesterday in the
depot of the East Tennessee, Virginia
and Georgia railroad, and looked mis
erable.
The young couple bad good cause
to look sad if the story which the hus
band told, while his wife sat by bis
side and sobbed bitterly, is true.
It required no big trunks to bold
their worldly goods and chattels. A
large basket contained all they owned,
and the young man said neitheHic or
his wife had a friend or relative in the
world oi whom they could ask or ex
pect to receive assistance..
Although the young wife was worn
out by traveling and excitement, she
was a’pretty girl, and it was her beau
ty which had brought the young cou
ple into the desolate position in which
they found themselves.
Mr. Wright explained his difficul
ties to a stranger because lie was on
tirely unfamiliar with the ways of a
city and was anxious to find out how
he could obtain sonic money to con
tinue his journey.
He said that his wife, until Tues
day afternoon, was Miss Mamie Lou
Scarrett, and lived witli an old aunt
near Jesup, in Wayne county.
The girl’s father died when she was
a baby, and her mot her also died when
she was 5 year old. and nhc was left
with no relatives who seemed anxious
to undertake the responsibility of her
education.
Finally, a childless couple who re
sided in Thomas county took charge
of the baby, and until she was fifteen
years old she received the kindest and
most devoted attention from her
adopted parents. Just at the time
when her life appeared opening with
every prospect of happiness the only
friends she had over known died with
in a few months of each other, and
again she wa3 left to face the world by
herself. The cousin who inherited the
fortune left by the old people told
Miss Scarrett that lie had a large fam
ily to support and advised her to find
out if she had any relatives and he
would pay her fare to them, but he
would do nothing more.
Miss Scarrett, so the story goes,
went to live with relatives near Jesup.
A big cousin figures, lmviug fallen in
love witli the young lady; Wright
follows and marries the girl, after hav-
iug cut his rival badly in a fight, about
the girl. The young man pawned
his watch, and left Macon for Atlan
ta, where lie expected to get work.
Who is John Wilberforco Wright,
and who is Miss Mamie Lou Scarrett?
Law and Fish.
Fishermen living on Luke lumopia
have been deriving profit by catching
fish aud sending them to the Thoiras-
ville for sale, The legislature of
18S7 onacted a law making it penal
to fish in the fresh water lakes and
streams of Florida for barter, sale or
shipment beyond the limits of the
state. Acting undor the authority of
this law the justice of the peace in
that district had the parties arrested
and placed under bond in the sum of
two hundred dollars each for appear
ance at the next term of J.cou circuit
court. Tho partios scoured the ser
vices of Mr. T. N. Hopkins, a promi
nent lawyer of Thomasvilie, end lie
had the case brought before Judge D.
8. Walker at Tallahassee on a writ of
habeas corpus. The judge promptly
ordered the release of the parties, for
the reason that the legislature of
1880 had enacted a law repealing the
section of the law undor which they
were arrested. The happy fishermen
are therefore given free license to con
tinue to catcli and soil fish to their
Georgia friends and derive ns great
profit from the sale as they can. Oth
er justices of the peace will please
nnkc. a note of this qiu] not disturb
tho lishormen who am deriving profit
from the salo of fish.—Floridian, Tal
lahassee.
