elected Principal of the Music Depart
ment of Eastman Academy, Eastman,

compliment to the young lady. The

Thomas county is the great LeCoute
pear eenter. Our people have never
lost faith in the fruit. Aud they
have made thousands and thousands
out of it. A correspondent of the
Constitution, writing from here touch
ing this valuable fruit, says:
“The startling scales of the LcCoutc
pear made here this summer arc at
tracting universal attention. Mnny
farmers have more inouey in hand
than they ever saw before at one time.
All other fruits have yielded to the
disastrous season of last winter, but
the LeConte is gallantly holding its
own. Buyers have been here from
all sections and the demand has far
exceeded the supply.
Excessive bearing last year and the
late spring freezes this season hnve
so mutilated the peach and fruit trees
that there will be a dearth of fruit
throughout the state, blit the vigor
ous aud thrifty LeConte comes to the
front with an ample supply of good,
wholesome fruit for home use, and a
considerable quaoity for shipment-
The simple fact that all other fruit
trees have yielded to th<- disastrous
frosts of last spring, while the Le
Conte pear has now an average crop
rapidly approaching maturity, should
establish its character beyond all
cavil and controversy.
The temporary disease which ap
peared iu some orchards here last
spring, aud which was so readily pro
nounced pear blight by the croakers,
has entirely disappeared, aud so far
as ray observation extends, there is
not a vestigo of it in this section.
An orchard of a few acres of this
wonderful near tree is worth more to a
farmer each year than a large plant i-
tion cultivated in cotton.
For several years Mr. Robert Alex
andre has bccu grafting different vari
eties of apples on LeConte stocks, and
has succcedcdbeyond his highest hopes.
These grow about six feet the first year
and begin to bear well the third. Ho
thrifty and fruitful have these trees
proven that he has dug up all his ad-
ple trees and replaced thorn with
young trees grafted on I.eContc
stocks.’’

LOWER BROAD MILLINERY HOUSE,
Cairo Dots.
Mr. Wesley Hair, who ruts a pub
lic gin at this place, happened to
a very serious accident yesterday,
while ginning. He attempted to pick
up some cotton which hud fnllcn under
the gin, when h : s right hand was
caught by the saws and literally saw
ed to pieces up to the wrist joint. He
was brought to I)r. Johnston’s office,
where, with the assistance of Dr.
Walker, the injured member was am
putated. The accident is to he de
plored from the fact that he has a large
family dependent upon his labor for
support.
The Alliance warehouse at this
place is nearing completion, under the
supervision of the Messrs. Dixon and
Moore Bios, contractors It lias gone
up as if by magic and will soon be
ready for occupancy, and we say in
this connection thnt it is rumored that
our fellow townsman, Joshua Barrow,
will be appointed manager. No better
selection could lie made.
Cotton is coming in nt a lively rate.
Up to the present there has been a
hundred or more halts sold iu our lit
tle burg. Cairo's merchants pay as
high prices for cotton as can be had
anywhere outside of the cotton cen
ters, and the farmers appreciate it
and show th.ir faith by bringing it
here.
Our merchants are receiving stacks
of goods daily, in fact, standing room
is at a premium iu most of the stores.
Mr. W. B. Roddnnberry, one of our
most enterprising merchants, has gone
north to lay in a supply of fall aud
winter goods.
What’s the matter with the candi
dates ? Come up, boys, and let tho
dear people know wlmt you want. It
is a laudable ambition to aspire to of
fice, even if you are out n V and get
left.
