There aw fow purer or brainier men than Bob Mitchell.—Jjews and Advertiser, Albany. ngih? road it Tifton to Thomasville, Who is He? Proprietor Stuart would very much like to know the whereabouts of one C. H. Shafer, as he calls himself. Schafer arrived here a few days ago, aud took up bis stopping place nt the Stuart. In rather a careless manner he gave it out that he was a revenue officer, a detective, and a barkeeper, naming his business as suited his lis teners He registeied from Fa vannab. Being au attractive man in dress and appearance, and a good talker, he made a number of acquaintances. The only baggage he carried was a hand satchel. When bia week was up he informed Mr. Stuart with the air of a millionaire “that when he (Mr. Stu art.) wanted any money, ho knew where to get it.” Thursday he concluded to try other parts, and without the formality of paying bis bpard, Eoiqo 818, left on a freight train. Friday night he was heard from through Mr. Dan Bird, of Monticello, who recognized him by the description. He was then in Al bany, under the name oi Newman. Mr. Stuart weut up to Albany yester day, but the game had flown, leaving the Mayo lutcl in the same manner ns the Stuart. While hi re he received a package througli the express officq addressed to Harry ^qn^cjrsoq. “" for Sheriff. “Unde Sum, 1 * n correspondent of the Southwest Gonrgian, says: “We think that the alliance should proposo a man to be in the race for sheriff, and wo will say that M'r. W. H. Collins is one of the choicest men of our section, to fill that place. He doesn’t want to run, but let the alli- ancemen put him nut nt one#, aud, it he should be »l^pt{4 h? wVl 'f>B the plaue as good or better than any one else. Air- Collins is a good farmer, and one of the best pitixens our coun try affords, Lot us work fur him.” iiftlf iM fh£Tihb alliance will not, as an alliance, put out any candidates for county officers. This would be going into politics, sure enough. County officers have nothing to do with making laws; they only oxeent}, them. Mr. Collins ia a good man, qnd if he wants to run for sheriff, ho has a perfect right to do so; but he should go into the primary with other democrats, not as an alliance candi date, but ns a democrat. And this is what Air. Collins will likely do—if he runs. 4 ^^apgeiJbtricidence, A young insurance agent, who has been spending some time in the city, relates a peculiar coincidence which happened nt a social gathering horij, Friday evening. Alter the victors had arrlycd it \vas suggested to try the spirits through an ppiptuer me dium, and a table was produced. Af ter the “Ghost had walked” for several minutes, the spirits were asked if any one from the other world wished to communicate with the young gentle man refered to. Almost immediately the name of a lady who died a week or two ago in a distant city was spell ed out. The insurance man was astonished, for he was certain that no one in the party knew of his acquain tance with her. None of the partv who were present are bolieyera Iq spiritualism, but all think the coinci dence a very strange one. Mr. Rushin Honored. Mr. A. Q. Aroody passed through Friday enroute hopje to Boston from the State Agricultural Society convention at LaGrange, and the Alliance meeting at Atlanta. Rev. J. M. Rushiu, who is a member of tho commlttca on constitution and by laws of the Alliance, was elected to attend the Kansas Alliance State Con vention, but was compelled to decline the honor on account of pastoral duties. - Captain S. Thomas county ought to be well represented in that school, Mrs. Avery, wife of Engineer Avery, who with her husband oceu pies what was formerly the Rogers house on Smith avenue, by her pluck and promptness, saved that street from a fire on Friday. During the dav ; while the meu were away, a blazo was discovered on the roof of the house by a small boy. As soon as Airs. Avery heard the alarm of fire she mounted the roof of tho house and with pulling ofi shingles and fighting tho fire with water, handed up to her, the blaze was quenched. But for her prompt measures tho flames would,in a short time, have been beyond control. It is a coinoidc-nco that this makes the second time tho same house has caught on fire, and on both occasions the firo has been ex tinguished by ladies. The other fire happened while Air. W. H. Rogers occupied the house. Well, every one will get a rest on the force bill, now. Reed, however, will probably not enjoy the rest—but the rest of us will. Disasters coiqe in battalions. The wires reported three fearlul accidents yesterday, one near Reading, Pa., one in C-olorado aad the third in Califor nia, all caused by cars breaking loose and running down steep grades. A number of people were killed in eaeh accident. Gordon Will Lead. A correspondent of the Augusta Chronicle says: “We have been waiting for Gordon,” said one of the most prominent busi ness men of Atlanta “It has been ab. solutely sickening to watch the course of the politicians and so-called leaders towards this sub-treasury bill. With the exception of Turner and Crisp, none of the men who have opposed the bill have had the ability to make any sort of an impression by what they said against it. Now, Gordon comes, and he takes the bold stand he ought to take. “I would rather lose forty elections than support that bill,’ he said, and that is the spirit of the true statesman. Gordon has the abil ity to make the fight on the sub treas ury and his action in that speech makes him the leader i-i such a fight. And he will have plenty of followers, let me tell you that. A very great many people not only outside of the Alliance but inside it have been wait- ing for a leader. Now that they have one, you'll see that they will flock to his standard." May Not Run. Dr. Felton has writter a lottor to the Atlanta C'enstitutiou, iu which ho says: “There Is an explanation necessary in regard to ray interview with the Constitution in to day’s paper. Un less there were unmistakable evidences that I was tho overwhelming choice of the democratic party in the seventh district, I should refuse to become a candidate for congress. Therefore, you will please say to your read erg , that I have by no means announced my candidacy for a placp. that will de pend entirely upon future develop ments.” Wo hope Dr. Felton will not run. Ho has been for years an organized democrat, aud he should not lend him self tq an independent movement. Cholera’s Awful Sweep. San Francisco, Aug. 22.—Japan ese papers state that cholera is making headway through the country despite the efforts of the government to ar rest it. The total number of cases has been about three thousand, GO per cent- of which have died. Madrid, Aug. 22.—CLollera is spreading steadily alooy the Alediter- rnnean north of Valencia, whore there are teq to twelve new cases. Tho dis» ease has appeared in several villages in tho province of Toledo, and suspi cious cases have, been discovered in Madrid, Berlin, Aug 2?.—Several cases qf cholera are reported in the vic ; . n ity of Berlin. The November elections will put a quietus on the force bill. Old Ho ir may call it up next session, but it will hatdly pass. - • —— — Webb refuses to submit to arbi tration, and the result will prob ably be a general strike on the Vanderbilt roads. Unfortunately the Vanderbilt’s can stand the strain bet ter than the strikers.
