The Deadly Cigarette.
I.often, 11 to uthletc, recently said
to a New York Star reporter:
“Cigirettc smoking is doing more to
injure the rising generation of this
country than early drinking. I pro
pose in the coiuiug winter to deliver a
series of lectures attacking this habit.
The cigarette is the dude’s pipe, and
it contains four distinct poisons—that
of nicotine, which is the only one
contained in a cigar; oil of paper,
which isdendly ; oil of arsenic, which is
used to make the paper burn, and
opium, which is a poison. I have
heard it said that there is no opium
in American cigarettes, for ths reason
that the drug is too expensive for use
in their manufacture. That is all
nonsense. Say opium costs .810 a
pound. By mixing it as druggists do
in the preparation of pnrcgoric, the
cigarette manufacturers can sprinkle
thousands of their noxious products
with a pound of it. They do use
opium, nnd that freely, ns is fully
proved by the peculiar flavor of the
nasty tilings that they turn out.
Then, too, a good deal of snltpeter is
used in the putting up of cigarettes.
I am so impressed with the evils of
cigarette smoking that I have started
an earnest crusade against it."
