L Hayes went u,i to Albany yesterday morning. Mr. W. G. Acree, ot Savannah, was in the city yesterday. Farmers should not forget that Sep tember is a month of storni3. The dust has been most effectually iaid. No growling about a sprinkler now. Cotton, at this season of the year, is safer out of the field than in it; and it is still safer, when sold and—paid for. Mr. A. L McCollum, a leading planter and melon grower ot Mitchell county, was in the city yesterday. The September Magazines are at the book stores. They excel this month in handsome illustrations and interesting articles. Messrs. Dan Forest and Joe Mas sey, ot Boston, were among the lead ing farmers and Alliancemen in the city yesterday. Ladies who have recently walked through Laurel Hill cemetery com plain that the grounds are not kept in good order. The improved order of Red Men held their first meeting in their new quarters over Reid & Culpepper’s last night. This order is growing very rapidly in Thomasvtlle. Tho five numbers of the Century Magazine, noticed a few days sinco as having disappeared from the library, were taken, wo understand, during tho Guards fair held in tho rooms of tho association. They should be re turned. Mr. George Griffin, who has been connected with Levy’s City Shoe store for some time, will go to Macon to enter Mercer University, where he will take a course of studies. George is popular here and it is hoped he will make this his home when his college days are over. Mr. Charley Smith has resigned his position as orderly sergeant of the Guards, and will leave shortly to enter the University of Virginia, where he will take a thorough course. The election of his successor will take place at next regular meeting of the Guards, which will be Monday night. Mr. J. E. Reynolds Appointed Manager of Express Office Here. Mr. J. E. Reynolds, of Waycross, has been appointed manager of the Southern Express Company’s office here. Mr. Reynolds has been in the express business for a long time and is efficient in all its branches. He has assumed charge and will no doubt make an efficient agent in Thomas- ville. Mr. Wilder Bostick, who has been acting as agent since Mr. Love Wilder resigned, will go to Albany. It is said that the company’s office, on Jackson street, will be fixed up and more conveniently arranged before the winter business begins. This would be quite an improvement, and the company .will no doubt have the changes made. “Humanity” writes a timely article on the subject of better treatment of dumb beasts. A man who will cru elly beat or mistreat one of these ani mals should be promptly and severely punished. Let the law on this subject be rigidly enforced. Of Interest to Old SekHero*. Col., W. LT Calhoun, "president of the Board of Trustees of the Confed erate Home, located at Atlanta, has addressed some inquiries to the ordi nary’s of the counties which will he interesting to disabled ox-confederate soldiers. Tho following questions are asked: How many needy ex-confederate soldiers armthcro in your county? How «*•&/of them were wounded during’the ivar—where and how? How many of them, giving name, company and regiment, will be wil ling to cotno have families, and if they wish to bring their families, giving age, sex and number of each family? How many of such as would be willing to come are able to do work of any kind. nnd tho condition of the health of. each? What is the present occupation of applicants or of their families, and whether any of them are supported by the county or other public chari ty? How mauy will come vithout fam ilies? Whether applicants are bona fide citizens of Georgia, aud if so, how long? How many of such as arc willing to come are now and have been draw ing pensions from the state? Through the voluntary contribu tions of the people of Georgia a tract of 120 acres of land near Atlanta has been purchased, and the new home building will be (completed about the latter part of this month or Oct. 1. Mr. Calhoun says that the purchase of the land and construction of the building will nearly exhaust the fund donated, leaving nothing for the maintenance of the home, which cannot bo opened until provision is made for its support by the general assembly, or in some other way. Mr. Calhoun says in his letter that “the men wno responded to tho call for the defense of the state, and who are now, in consequence of that ser vice, decrepit and worn down from diseaso and wounds, have a right to be cared for in their declining years. This homo is established for that pur pose. A noblo trust. Grand in its conception and which will yet, I hope, 11 the hearts of the old soldiers with joy, and of tho people of Georgia with pride and satisfaction that they were inspired to inaugurate such an institu tion.
