Last Sunday was the 4th anniver
sary of the earthquake at Charleston.
It was a shaky time.

CoL Lester was nominated for con
gress at Waycross, on Tuesday. This
was a fitting tribute to tho man.
The Georgia mule is not taking any
part in politics. He is engaged in
better business.
September Weather.
Everyone is interested in the
weather. It is an old subject, but it
holds its own. It is discussed on the
street corners, in the offices, on the
cars, in the sewing circle, and—every
where else.
Hicks,the St. Louis weather piopb
et, thus forecasts the weather for this
month:
For tho beginning of September
Mr. Hicks predicts cool nights, with
storm conditions running from cast to
west between the fid and the 7th
Fiom the 11th to the 22d a storm
period will prevail, and dauger days
will run from the 14th to the 17th
A. few earthquakes may occur about
the middle of the month. About the
19th and 20th it will be vary warm
with active storms nnd perhaps earth
quakes. Tho month will close with a
storm period. While there will he
several warm days during September,
they will be followed by very cool
spells.
Texas on the Sub-Treasury Plan-
The Stale Alliance of Texas has
just closed its annual session. An
efiort was made to endorse the sub
treasury plan. The following sub
slitutewns adopted:
Resolved, By tho Farmers’ Alli
ance of Texas, that the bill now pend
ing before congress and known as the
sub-treasury bill, be referred to the
suh-Allianccs to be discussed as
measure for carrying into eflect the
demands made at St. Louis by the
National Farmers’ Alliance and In
dustrial Union, that the government
should issue money direct to the peo
ple without the intervention of nation
al banks.
Further resolved, That it is the
sense of this body that all members
of tho Farmers Alliances arc free to
take any position they may prefer on
the discussion of said bill.
. Bex Tebbeli.,
Tom Smith.
It will thus bo seen that the Alli-
ancemen of Texas do not propose
to make tho sub-treasury plan
test. It would be well it some of the
order in this state would follow the
conservative position taken by their
brethren in Texas. Mr. Terrell will
bs remembered here. He made an
able address to the order in the court
house in Thomosvillc something
more than a year ago. In this con
nection it should be remembered that
Gov. Gordon is opposed, only for the
reason that he will not endorse the
sub-treasury plan. If living
Texas AUiancemcn would be free
to vote for him, regardless of the
plan: here in Georgia the edict has
gone forth that he must be sacrificed
becauso he does not endorse the
scheme. Which shows up the better
the Texas or Georgia Alliancemen?
It is proper to add, in this connection
that hundreds of Alliancemen will
support Gordon regardless of orders
from headquarters.
Metcalf Mention.
Metcalfe, Ga., Sept. 2nd, 1890.
Ecltor Tihes.Enterftise
Metcalfe school opened yesterday
under management of Prof. A. F.
Berry. Heretofore the fall sessions
been poorly attended. This
should not be so. Parents should see
to it that their children are promptly
enrolled and kept going.
The Alliance at this place have
bought the warehouse of the Messrs.
Stegall, and appointed Mr. W. S.
Howard as agent. Mr. Howard is
well capacitated for the duties im
posed, and the universal opinion is
that he is the right man for the place.
We hope his labors will be as pleas
ant to him as it is gratifying to us
to have him with us.
Dr. J. E. Hanna & Co. will be
succeeded in the drug business by
Dr. E. R. Young and Mr. J. H.
Davidson. While wc regret to lose
Dr. Hanna’s identification with us,
wo are pleased to have our old friends
as the new firm. They need no com
mendation from us. Mr. Davidson
has been well and favorably known
as a progressive business man since
Metcalfe had its existence, and Dr.
Young is the synonym of honesty
and integrity.
Messrs. Mitchell & McIntyre,
owing to n change in their business
in Thomasvillc, tire selling out their
entire stock at cost. Rumor has it
that tho stock will bo bought by
parties who, as yet, do not want
names given to the public. It is
pretty safe to say, however, that the
business will be continued by a new
firm.
Metcalfe continues to grow. Tho
Messrs. Crenshaw Bros, will soon have
their new store ready for occupancy,
When finished, judging from plans
and specifications, it will be a credit
to our town. Then there are several
residences, cither under course of
construction or contracted for. Now
is the time to invest in Metcalfe real
estate, prices will never be less. You
can put a pin down here, Mr. Croaker.
Rev. L. W. Moore, of Miccosukic,
preached an interesting sermon in
the Methodist church to a largo and
appreciation congregation, on Sunday
last. Ho will assist Rev. T. J. Ryder
in a series of meetings at this place,
commencing next Sunday night, nnd
continuing through next week.
Never before have we heard such
general complaint of “boll worm” in
cotton. From that source alone.many
claim, the crop will be short by one*
half. Is there any remedy to keep
tho little pests from making such a
wholesale destruction?
Parties claiming to be on the
“inside” say the Plant System has
let the contract for building the road
from Metcalfe to Tallahassee, in case
work is begun on the road now under
agitation in Tallahassee. Let ’er roll.
We are not certain that the building
of the road will benefit us at this
point, but a pull, a strong pull and a
pull altogether will be made to keep
matters os pleasant os thoy are now.
Mr. W. D. Stegall has resigned
tho position of Express agent and
Mr. E. C. Powell has been appointed
to fill the vacancy.!
The post offico has been moved
from Stegall & Bro’s. to Young &
Davidson’s. By tho way, we have di
rect mail from Savannah Jand Macon
now and mail does not have to lay
over in Thomasville a day and night
as heretofore. And another step to
front the offico hero has received in
structions to issue postal notes which
will prove a convenience to our peo
ple. Just wait aud let us grow a
little more, and this will be a money
order office.
