W. J. James, colored, was nomina ted for the Legislature by the Repub licans of Liberty county, and will probably be elected and enjoy the houor of being the only negro in the Legislature. A good many harsh thiDgs have been said and written about Judas Iscariot, but lowering him to the level of the average republican poli tician as republican Kennedy, of Ohio, did, the other day, is about the hardest blow the late J. Iscariots memory has ever icceived. 'lhe new census report of religious bodies in th; United States shows that ihere are 234 sects with 25,000,000 members. The Methodists number 5,000,000, the Baptists 4,000,000, the Roman Catholics 4,000,000, the Pres biterians 3,000,000, and the Episco palians 2,000,000.—Exchange. Democratic nominations for con gress aro complete in Georgia now The nest delegation in congress from this State will stand as follows: First district, Rufus E. Lester; Second dis trict, Henry G. Turner: Third dis trict, Charles F. Crisp; Fourth dis trict, R. G. Moses; Fifth district, L. F. Livingston; Sixth district, James G. Blount; Seventh district, K. W. Everett; Eighth district, T. G. Law son; Ninth district, Thomas Winn; Tenth district, Thomas Watson. Jekyl creek, $7,500. ShflCg Other appropriations for Georgia that have already become lavs at this session arc:~” rChickamaugua park, 8125,000: roadway from Marietta to Nashville cemetery, $8,000; Trezevant claim, $35,000; ’the Atlanta military post, $75,000. Besides this the Columbus public building bill, appropriating $100,000, has .‘passed both houses, and the chances favor its signature by the president. Thus the total appropriation that have been and to be made by this congress, to be expended in Georgia, foot up to $1,308,000. A Traitor t) the Order- From tlic Homo Tribune. “The lard bill has passed the House and the hog is on top in Washington. This is the quadruped hog; the bibed porker has been on top ever since grandpa’s hat was inaugurated. To pass this infamous imposition on the Southern farmers, the Republicans had the active aid of their Republican brother and Alliance ally, Dr. Ma- cunc, who holds a high offico in the Alliance. It ought to make the Alliance mem hers in the cotton States mighty sick nnd more indignant to know that this high official, who is a Republican, should have used bis official influence in securing the passage of a bill which robs the Southern farmer of millions of dollars annually and places such an embargo upon their cotton seed as to about take them out of the market. And yet the Alliance is paying this traitor, Macune, to stay iu Washing ton to watch the legislative proceed ings and work for the passage of such measures as will be of benefit to the Southern farmers. How well ho has done this is shown in the passage of the Conger lard bill, The Alliance has been stabbed by TRULY A MIRACLE. SixSIeepBrs Wrecked Beyond Re pair—No onelHurt. Albany, N. Y., Sept. 5.—The second section of train 30, on the New York Central nnd Hudson River Railroad, was wrecked at a point about three miles below Greenbush about midnight Inst night. Six sleepers were wrecked, but it is mi raculous that no one was killed. The injured list will foot up about seven. Six conches were turned bottom side up iu a ditch fifteen feet deep, and they were wrecked beyond repair. The engine remained on the track. A Clever Hotel Clerk. Mr. Ben George is again to be seen behind the desk of the Pulaski House He was formerly there, but for the past three years has been chief clerk at the Screven House. Mr. George has had long experience in the hotel business, is a thoroughly capable hotel man nnd has a wide acquaintance nud host of warm friends among the traveling public.—Savannah Daily Times. Mr. George is one of the cleverest hotel clerks in the country. He is always polite and accommodating; and he doesn’t wear a flashing false diamond pin. This Inst point is very much in his favor. P. John Temple Graves Resigns. Rome, Ga., Sept. 5.—Editor John Temple Graves of the Tribune of Rome severed his connection with that paper by resignation to-night The cause assigned is that lie is not in sym pathy with the stockholders and direc tors of the company on the political issues in the congressional campaign in this district It is understood that he has made no arrangements for the future yet His successor will proba bly be J. L. Martin. AN UNIQUE DI8TINCT0N. Mr. Graves, who enjoys the unique distinction of having been a democra tic elector at largo successively from Florida and Geoigia in the last two presidential campaigns, felt that his allegiance was due to the regular democratic organization, which is about to nominate Col. Everett for congress. A majority of the Tri bune’s directors and stockholders, and of the citizens of Rome favor Dr. Fel ton, who has just been nominated by a mass meeting. There was no fric tion in tho management, and Mr. Graves frankly and voluntarily re signed in order that the views of the majority might not be embarrassed by his connection.” And Mr. Graves was right. conclusion. Washington, Sept. 5.—The Presi dent, accompanied by Mrs. Harrison, Private Secretary Halford and his stenographer,Miss Sanger, left Wash ington at 11:10 this morning for Creeeon, Pa., via Pennsylvania rail road on the regular limited train. The party did not occupy » private car but took seats in a parlor car with the rest of the passengers. Diferent Kinds of Prodigals. A prominent judicial light from the south, who had spent several days at Washington as United States sena tor from his native state, was in the city not a great while ago, and told this story, which is worth repeating: in reconstruction times a couple of local politicians in Tennessee engaged in a debate on the all-absorbing topic. The first one, a white, cited the parable of the prodigal eon, and argued that the southerners should be taken back in similar manner, and given all their former privileges. He made a touching speech, and seemed to have won his case. However, his opponent, a woolly-haired preacher, quickly took the platform and began his argument “My ’ponent,” he said, “done tole you about de prodi gal son, and say dey all should come back jes like he did. But, my frons, we read dat de prodigal son came and stood a long way ofT till his fader saw him and ran and hung on his neck and kissed him. But taint so now; here we have de prodigal walkin’ right up into the doors ob de capitol an’ marchin’ right in wid he’s hat on back ob de head and axin’: 'Whah’s dat veal?”—St. Paul Pioneer Press.
