A Year of Cyclones.
The list of disasters and fatalities
resulting front cyclones lias been so
large this year that 1890 will be mem
orable, jtMbah'y, in history as the cy
clone year The total number of lives
lost in this country so iar this year by
the agit.cy of cyclones is 915, as co n-
par. d with 163 in 1S89, 350 in 1880,
188 in 1SS7, 27 2 in 1886, and min
1885. It would no’ be surprising i(
the complete record of 1890 should
show an ue'gregaic larger tu.m hit of
the last five years cmibii ed. I I e
Old V. orld’a record is even larger than
o ir*. It adds 3,531 victims to the
1st. The course of the c-clone is

pr< viuu- j,ars, Missouri and Kansas
are more subject to attacks from the
cyclone than any other states. In the
eighty-seven year.- covered by the stat
istics which the corps published .year
or two ago Missouri had been visited
156 times and Kansas 153 times. It
would naturally be expected that some
state in the immediate neighborhood of
these would stand next on the list, but
this assumption is shown by the rec
ords to be groundless. After Kansas,
Georgia, with 128 calls, receives more
attention than any other state, follow
ed closely, however, by Illinois with
127 and Iowa with 118. Then a skip
must be taken to the far south again,
where Alabama stands with 102 to its
credit. Neirly or quite every state
east oi the Rocky mountains has a
place on the cyclone records.
We, tn Georgia, this year have been
almost exempt, lortunately, from cy
clone visits, but the northern and wes
tern states have suffered severely frurn
the cy clone’s fury,—News.
