Forty-five men were killed. Two strikers have been arrested charged with wrecking a train on the New York Ccatral Ky., a few nights since. A reward of 85,000 has been offered for the arrest and conviction of the guilty parties. It is said thnt there is a considerable amouut of frigidity between Clarkson and Quay. The temperature between these two great and bad republicans is below zeio. Let ’er freeze. A Meeting for Missions. Rev. T. T. This reminds us of an old saying that there are no choirs in that celestial laud; for the reason that they would fall out about the hymns. The boy who will he president of the United States is in knee breeches. No one knows who he is. If they did, he would be courted and flattered by thousands. ’Tis well that his identity is a secret. The democrats will make the re publicans carry the odium of the force bill in the coming elections. And, in addition to that, they will pile the infamous tariff bill on top of the force bill. This will stagger the stalwarts. Reed’s fate was decided Monday in his congressional district. He wi.l have to show a mighty clean tally sheet, or the democrats in the next congress will “bounce” him. He will then “know how it is himself.” Ex-Hcadsman Clarkson is talking about starting a big republican daily paper in Atlanta. It would advocate a high tariff. Did Mr. Clarkson ever see soap suds poured into a bole ? His 8250,000, the proposed amount to start the paper, would disappear much in tho same way. Tho London Standard, commenting on the tariff system of tho United States, says: “The West and South have taken a long time to discover that they are being taxed in order to allow certain eastern mnnfacturers to earn 20 per cent, instead of 10 per cent, profit. The working of tho Mc Kinley bill will greatly assist them to realize the fact. Kansas Will Plant Wheat. Kansas City, Sept. 7.—The failure Of the Kansas corn crop has called the farmers thoughts to the wheat crop again, and not only last year’s wheat fields, but the corn fields and oat fields, and newly btoken prairie in many portions of the State, are being prepared for wheat. It is predicted that the acreage will tar exceed that of any previous year. In Dickenson county, the best wheat section of the State, the acreage will be at least 100, 000 acres, against 68,000 last year. Grant’s Resting Place. Washington, Sept. 7.—To-morrow week the House will pass the Plumb resolution to remove Gen. Grant’s re mains to Arlington, says Representa tive O’Neill, of Pennsylvania, who will be recognized to move its passage under a suspension of the rules-. Mr. O’Ncitl, having canvassed the House, finds but three members against the resolution of the thirty-three in the New York delegation. P. D. All the private apartments arc being refurnished, and tho official rooms are also receiving attention. The Historic Blue Room, which has remained untouched since it was dec orated by tiffany of New York, un der direction of President Arthur, nine years ago, is being redecorated by the Connecticut firm employed by Vice President Morton to do the dec orative work on his hotel, the Shore- ham. The designs include high wainscoting and deep friezes of figur ed work in’relief in three different shades of blue, blue plush furniture brocaded with silk and gold, and a Wilton carpet to match. The south portico leading from the Blue Room is being laid with Roman mosaic tiling by an Indiana firm after designs by Mrs. Harrison. Whon the Blue Room is completed the East Room will be refittod throughout. Even the kitch ens have not escaped attention, and have been wainscoted and paved with vitrified tiling, impervious to grease and veruiin. Eight hundred electric lights will be distributed throughout the building. "Begob, I’ve got the best of that murtherin’ railroad this time, anyhow.” said a Hibernian, who had a grudge against the company in question. “How is that, Dennis?” asked a by stander. “Pve bought a return ticket and I’m not coming back at all, at all ?” was the triumphant reply.—Bos ton Commercial Bulletin. No belter answer to the charge that the southern whites and blacks are getting along well together could be given, than to point to the fact that the south produced last year pretty nearj seven and a half millions of bales of cotton. If the south is let alone ihe will will settle the race prob lem to the satisfaction of all concerned. —News.
