OOOp m Reniember we arc headquarters for job work in this section. Everyone was in a “melting’ 1 mood yesterday. It was hot. See notice ot a house to rent. It is conveniently located. Possession given at once. Mr, C. B. Col ding, of Savannah, who is well known in the city, vaa at the Gulf yesterday. Everyone is delighted to know that a Pullman sleeper will hereafter make nightly trips between Savannah and Thomasville. See notice ot city Clerk Maclean. This is the last week for giving in city taxes. Avoid double tax, by giving in. Special attention, we are pleased to know, is being given to the sanitary condition of the town. This should be rigidly kept up until after a killing frost. E. M. Mallette has sold the beauti ful lot on Madison street, just beyond the old Christian place, to Amos Les ter. Amos expects to construct a handsome new home ou it for himself in the near future. Sheriff Hurst returned yesterday from Jacksonville, where he went af ter a prisoner who is in jail there. On account of some legal complications the prisoner is atill held in Jackson ville. Gus, however, will keep an eye cn him, Dr. M.M. Hutchinson has returned from a visit to his lormer home, Lake City, Fla. The doctor moved here from Florida about a year ago, and having lived here long enough to form an opinion, says he is in love with his now home. During the blow last Saturday night, Mr. Richy and other gentlemen saw a couple ol what appeared to be gen uine sea gulls fly over the town. They had evidently been driven from the gulf coast, distance only about fifty miles, by the force of the wind. The Waycross Reporter says that Mr. Albert Hertz has opened a store in the new Opera House in that grow ing town. Mr. Hertz is a thoroughly reliable young man, and he has a host of friends in Thomasville who wish him unbounded success. Mr. Gunti informs us that he will have the elegant new Opera House in Waycross ready for occupation in a few days. The first entertainment of the season will be given in it on the 20th inst, and Mr- Gunn would be glad to have some of his Thomasville friends come down to the christening. He will look after their comfort and pleasure. Stop the Leaks. The News, of yesterday, says: A “citizen” writes to the Morning News to the effect that there is an im mense waste of water in this city. He made an investigation in his-own house, and discovered a wastage of 300 gallons a day. lie entertains the opinion that if the wastage was stop* ped by a system of inspection and fines the artesian wells would afford an ample supply of water. But woul I it not be well for the city council to take steps to stop the wasting of wa ter. This reminds us that there are leaks in the water works here. They ought to be stopped. Council Proceedings. Council Rooms, Sept. 8,1890. Council met in regular session, Mayor Hopkins presiding. Aid. Wright, Hayes, Patten, Mer rill, Mitchell and Wise picsent. Minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. Petition of A. J. Quick to transfer license to Farrier & Ward was grant ed. Petition of M. T. Taylor & Rut ledge for mercantile license, was grant ed upon their complying with the or dinance. Alex. Smith, in lots fifty-three, fifty-two and eight, in the 13th district Tliomns county, said streets being shown on n map of said lots made by W. II. Rogers. County Surveyor. Achilles Smith, Cora S. Cassels, T. M. Smith, Poarl Slater, Susie P. Smith, Redden Smith. Aid. Merrill reported in favor of putting electric light on the boulevard and Dawson street, on the same terms and for the same time as the city is now paying for the lights on Dawson street. Aid. Wise, of the fire committee, reported in favor of buying two rub ber coats and two hats for Mitchell fire company, and he was authorized to make the purchase. Matter of eelling the fire bell was referred to the fire committee for re port. 1 Matter of buying an iron safe for the city was referred to the Mayor and Aid. Wright and Hayes, with power to act. On motion it was ordered that in future, in case of emergency where extra holp is wanted at tho water tanks, thnt tho hands will be paid by the chairman of finance committee, upon the approval of the chairman of the water committee. Following accounts were pnesed for payment. 13. O. Thompson, 8310.16; Wm. Campbell, $159.00; H. J. Blalock, 818.00; Times-Enlerprisc Publishing Company, 88.00; Thomasvillo Iron Works, 84.50; Thomasville Gun Works, 86.75. Other accounts referred to appro priate committees. ; Council adjourned. K. T. Mac-lean, Clerk. im A Talk About the 17th and 18th. Mr. James L. Hall has been circu lating over about Cairo this week. And Jim passes for one hundred cents on the dollar, wherever he goea. “What’s tho news across the river?” queried the reporter yesterday, upon meeting Mr. Hall at the post office. “Everything quiet, little politics, and plenty of work.” “By tho way,” continued Mr. Hall, "the people in the 17th and 18th are hustlers. They arc small farmers, hut they arc very successful ones. It is the most pros perous section of Thomas county, in my opinion.” "O, I forgot,” said the gentleman, as he was turning off. “I saw quite a curiosity on Mr. James Isom’s place, near Cairo. It was a citron vine, one stem of the vine measured fifty feet long, and contained fifty citrons. And there were numerous lateral vines from the samo root, running in every direction. If any of your readers can beat Mr. Isom’s citron vine, I would like to hear from them.” Who can beat it? Five Ballots Taken, But No Election. Tne Guards had a lively time at their armory, Monday night, attempt ing to elect an orderly sergeant. Messrs. Joe McCants and Frank Smith were tho favorites, and the com pany seemed divided into two equal parts, each side backing one or the other of the two named. Five ballots were taken, but at no time could a majority be secured, and the meeting resulted in a failure to elect a new or derly sergeant. Between now and' next Monday night the boys will have an opportunity to do some canvassing among the members, and by another meeting the election will probably prove more successful. Cairo In Savannah. The News, of yesterday, says: J. A. Powell, Miss Nellie Powell, Miss Jessie Powell, D. H. Singletary A. R. Paris, H. B. Wight, J. W. Hayes, and K, S. Wight, of Cairo, Ga., came in on the Cential railroad yesterday, morning, and registered at the Screven. They spent the day at Tybee, and came back to Savannah last night. The party returnsd home this morn ing. L. ■ B. ■ M. ■ H. “Not only Cheap, bat also Good!" (Do you realize the difference between the ordinary made hats and the nice styles wc handle ?
