The progress of the South in cotton manufacture is remarkable. When the war closed there were mills Co lumbus, Augusta and a few other lo calities in this section, but they were few and small. Now the South has 336 cotton mills, operating 1,819,291 spindles. Thirty-nine new mills have been started in the South fhfoj yeaj: and eighteen more will be in opera tion before January 1, Theso mills will work over 325,000 spindles. During the year ended August 31, Southern mills consumed 546,363 fogle^ of jtotfon, as against 481,245 foales the year previous. The returns from investments in this species of S iroperly has been extremely gralify- ng apd lpad fo {he ppnclujipu tfofd the South will eventually control tho cotton goods trade not only of Ameri ca, but of the world.—Macon Tele graph. CtTEBTEBIO-ST eSc TDAAZLTIZEIIA- Country Roads. Many States far in advance of Georgia in attention to public roads. The broad turnpikes ofVirginia and the macadamised roads of Maryland and Virginia, are examples that might be followed. Glynn county could wisely learn a lesson from Fulton coun ty, whose officials liaye built some magnificent roads in that county. Inviting visitors for pleasure through the winter, Brunswick canUQ.t bftf.e fa induce a lavqc number of then) to, pp.m? into her gf)fas a n d retain them, unless opportunities are made far passing the time pleasantly, The county roads should be made wide enough for the passage of teams ; all stumps and roots should be raken out of them, and pine straw put in all the sandy places and renewed once a year. In Michigan and New Jer sey roads arc obtained by {he i^se of pine straw, as fine as the world affords. —Brunswick Times. Thomas county should pay more at tention to her roads. Good roads do not only add to the comfort and con venience of enabling them fa haul heavier loads, and reach their market towns more speedily, and with less wear and tear to wagons and teams, but they add largely fa tfop value of iands lying along them. Our roads should be widened nnd graded. When the work is once done, it will be an easy matter to keep them up. No subject is more worthy the attention of tho citizens of Thomas county. ft We fatfae a big faistake, Adam,” said Eve’, after they had settled out side of the Garden. “How, dear f” “We should have insisted upon hav ing that matter arbitrated,” It is a fact that cannot be disputed that all wfoq yse ^hen^d'S h- h- Colo gne will jflwfj-s ttse it in preference to any other.
