Phosphate In Thomas.
‘'The first report of State Geologist
J. W. Cpenccr, under the new act re-
o gan'-.ing the geological bureau, was
wade to Gov. Gordon to-day. It is
in reference to the phosphate deposits
in Thomas county, which, he says,
contain ( rom Co to 8o per cent. o(
phosphate of lime making them richer
iban fie South Carolina deposits. He
says the bed is best exposed three
miles west ot Boston, on the Thomas-
viHe toad, although the deposits are
scc.i at very few points on the surface.
The tidiest deposits exist at a depth
ot from four to ten feet below the sur
face, and some of them are ten feet
thick. The percentage of both clay
and iron is low. Five hundred tons
to the acre are necessaty to pay ex
penses, but in Thomas county he
thinks 10,000 tons to the acre could
be removed in some places. He
thinks the deposits are very ■ ich and
should be developed-”

Talking About Turner.
A writer iu the Constitution, speak
ing of Georgia’s delegation in the next
congress, has the fo’iowing to say
about the Hon. H. G. Turner.
“In the second district, Hon. Henry
G. Turner’s re nomination was unani
mous in tho convention and practical
ly unanimous throughout the district.
Judge Jim Guerry, it will be remem
bered, was talked of as a possible can
didate, but the judge soon settled any
opposition from his standpoint by an
nouncing that he was not a candidate.
During the time when it seemed
possible that Mr. Turner might have
opposition, the condition of a flairs in
tho second district was a topic of very
general conversation here in Atlanta.
I remember once heating Mr. Gr.en
Dodd, a thorough-go 1 ig business man
as you know, and one who takes no
active part in politics, though he is
always well posted on everything per
taining thereto, says:
“It will he a great mistake to beat
Mr. Turner, no matter by whom. In
my opinion he's one of the ablest
men in the Georgia delegation, and
he is certainly one of tho most useful
the state ever had. I watched his
career closely while he was in the leg
islature, aud I tell you that little head
of his 's just chuck full of sound sense. ’
And that sentimont is endorsed by
Georgians cverywhcie. With each
year’s service iu congress the member
adds to his usefulness, aud in the
shuggles wh'u'h are Lound to come up
iu the a'mostce.-iaiu event of on at
tempt on tbe part of the republ'ca s
to pa3? some forcc-bi 1 ’ legislation, the
wide south can be certain of very
efficient service from thememberfiom
tbe second d’strici of Georgia.
