Mr. T. J. Lamar, of Bartow, Fla.,
was at the Gulf yesterday.
Mr,. M. R. Do yds, of Jefferson
county, Fla., wr * at the Gulf yester
day.
Mr. E. M. Mallette has bought the
vacant property on corner of Broad
and Finn streets. He will cut it into
small lots and retail it out.
Only two cases were before the
Mayor yesterday. They were the rail
road case, and one of disorderly con-
kuct against Willie Gray. Both were
continued until another court.
Capt. Walters is moving from hjs
present stand on Jackson street, to the
store formerly occupied by Mr. E. O,
Thompson, which hns recently been
much improved. •
If the ditches along Mitchell street
were opened and deepened, it would
greatly improve the appearance of the
land adjoining, as well as add materi
ally to the health of those who reside
on that street.
It would be a good idea for tho city
fathers to put the < 'ollego Park in or
der, now that the summer’s growth is
about over. This is a pretty little
park and many people enjoy its quiet
beauty.
Mr. Robert G. Mitchell, Jr,, left
yesterday for Brooks county, where
he goes to take charge of Hickory
Head Academy, a flourishing country
school. Bob is an experienced teacher,
and one of the most popular young
men in South Georgia.
According to tho Thomnsville cor-
rsspoudent of the News, Mr. W. C.
Eason is worth 8100.000. Col., we
congratulate you. We call you Col.
now for the reason that any man
worth $100,000 is, in Georgia, at least,
entitled to that rank.
Tho Bruce branch should bo
straightened as much as is practicable
throughout its length in the city lim
its. This would save d : I, prevent
washing of ifs hanks, and debris ac
cumulating in places to obstruct the
the flow of water, besides greatly accel
erating the stream, thus allowing the
water to flow ofTbeforc it soaks into
the earth. This is an improvement
■0 obvious and important, that it
> seems strange it has not been already
made.
Returning to College.
Mr. Anton Wright returned yester
day to Athens, to resume his studies.
Mr. Sara Cassels, Jr., left last night for
tho University. John Culpepper, a
Thomas county boy, will leave for
the same University also, in a day or
two. _ _
Disorderly Negroes.
Complain** are made by parties re
siding in Fairview, of disorderly con
duct carried on by the negro railroad
hands at the shanties, out by the oil
mills. The citizens living in that vi
cinity are annoyed, almost nightly, by
tho. firing of pistols and other noises
They would like for the police to look
alter tho disturbers.
Fashions Changes.
Will Taylor has arranged the latest
in now fall cloth-'ng. in tho display
windows at C. H. Young <fc Co’s. See
the styles. Fashious have introduced
a number of new features this season
in gentlemen’s clothing, and Thomas-
▼ille merchants have the latest in
every line.
A matter that is just now troubling
the minds of local railroad authorities,
is who is the responsible party for
a case to be made out against an
engineer for blocking the streets
with cars. Is it the cogineer, the
conductor or the yardmaster? The
police, in making^ out a case for
blocking Broad and Madison, by
freight No. 17, recently, in which the
streets were made impassible for
twenty-four minutes, decided the
engineer was at fault, and he was
furnished with a summons to appear
before the Mayor yesterday morning.
Through his attorney, he made the
point.'thnt the conductor, and not the
engineer, had charge of the train. The
conductor was not present, but he will
probably plead that he lias no right
to enter a yard until given the signal
to do so by the. yardmaster. As the
rules of the road now stand, the train
men will have considerable trouble iu
steering clear of conflicting, with the
company’s rules, and the town's or
dinances. The mayor hns announced
his intention of enforcing the ordi
nance in this matter, and the railroad
will doubtless comply with the law.
Hon. A. T. McIntyre, Jr., will
write to the managers and explain
the situation fully. The cose against
the engineer was continued until Fri
day, when the presence oi the con
ductor will also be required.

Money for the Negro Schools.
Judge Hook, state school commis
sioner, will seek to have a bill intro
duced into the next legislature au
thorizing the state to receive a snug
sum to be devoted to the colored school
fund.
On the 9th of July 1836, John Mc
Lean died ia Glasgow, Scotland, leav
ing 565 pounds sterling to be devoted
to the education of the slaves on the
Gownc place on the Saraunah river.
For some reason the negroes have
never been located, and the money in
the hands of the executor’s of Mc-
Lcau’s estate has been put out at inter
est until it now amounts to 85,000.
These gentlemen have been for years
trying to get the state to take the
money off their hands and devote it
to educational purposes among the
negroes.
Commissioner Orr wrote and receiv
ed numerous letters about it, os well
ns Judge Hook, his successor. He is
unwilling to receive the money unless
authorized to do so by the state, and
for that purpose will seek to have a
bill passed by the next legislature.
