Greatest Among Them All.
Editors News and Advertiser:
The offers now being made through
which a cotton factory can be assured
to Albany will, if accepted and acted
upon, result in the development of
every local interest.
It will accomplish more and in less
time toward the upbuilding of Albany
than all the enterprises that have
hitherto been suggested.
A cotton factory with a hundred
thousand dollars capital would become
a staudiog attraction, invitation and
inducement to outside capitalists to
come among us seeking profitable in
vestments.
One such enterprise would lead to
the construction of another and a city
that now boasts of six or seven thous
and population would in a few years
expand to the dimensions of eighteen
or twenty thousand.
These are not mere newspaper spec
ulations but facts that have in many
instances been demonstrated in other
localities.
It will necessitate the erection of
many tenements os homes for the op
eratives. It will largely incrensa the
trade of the merchant and grocer and
enhance the value of real estate,
placing Albany at once upon the road
to a wealth and prosperity hitherto
unknown.
As a consoquence it is the present
privilege, if not the duty of every
wide-awake citizen, to contribute
promptly, and to the utmost of his
ability in aid of the grand project
contemplated.
In the advocacy of such special en
terprise, there is no disposition to
abandon or disparage any other good
work to the city’s advancement. On
tho contrary every encouragoment
should be given to nn early comple
tion of the dummy line, to a system of
water works, a commodious hotel and
every other attainment that will make
Albany, as she must eventually be,
the most attractive city io Southwest
Georgia.
And yet, chief among them all, is
a manufacturing spirit that opens the
way to a future growth and prosperity
that will startle some of the typical
Van Winkle’s when they wake at last
from their lethargic slumber of twenty
years or more.
A Visitor
We commend the above to the
thoughtful, thinking men of Thomas
ville. There is much in it; more than
appears on the surface. Thomasville
is being surrounded with cotton fac
tories, cotton compresses and other
levers of trade which must inevitably
tell against her, unless she wakes up.
There never has been a period in the
history of the town, when it needed
more, the united energies of its citi
zens. It looks, judging from the past,
as if it was useless to again and again
call the attention of property holdors
here, to the dangersconfronting them,
We are trying to do our duty in the
premises. Will others do the same?
»*-«
Lower Rates on Cotton.
Atlanta, Ga., Sept. 13.—Tho
R’chmond Terminal system this morn
ing reduced the rates charged for
compressed cotlon from 12 cents to 10
cents a hundred. This makes a differ
ence of 10 cents a bale or 8100,00 on
tho cotton crop of Georgia. The loss
will come out of the pocket of the
compress companies, but leading cot
ton men say the railroad will, of their
own accord, return to the old rate.
This shows what compresses and
competition will do. Will, or will
not, Thomasville take the hint?
Another Phosphate Bed Found.
Another large bed of phosphate ha3
been found in Thomas county. Capt.
Pratt, the eminent chemist has analy
zed it. It is on Dr. Smith’s place,
eight miles from town, and contains
62 per cent, of bono phosphate. It
begins to look as if there was plenty
of phosphate all over this county.
The working of it will prove a gicnt
thing for this section, and also tho en
tire stato.
