Dr. Mallard, who has been spending several days in the city on a visit to relatives, left yesterday morn ing for lib homo in New Orleans. Fred Atkinson, colored, is building quite a neat cottage on upper Madi son street. Tho better class of the colored citizens of Tbomnsville take considerable p^ido in owning com fortable homes. Levy’s windows today, as his column advertisement, is filled with neckwear. You will, by examining his windows, sec tho most elegant as sortment of this line of goods ever seen in Thomasvillc. Mr. Charley Tuttle, tho lower Broad street jeweler, lias returned from Jack sonville and points on tho St. Johns river, where he has been spending tho summer. His mother contemplates making Thomasvillo her homo, also very soon. Do You Want Boarders or Tenants? v A leading real estate agent said to ihe Times-Enterprise reporter yes terday : "I am quite frequently in re ceipt of letters from parties north ask ing me to send them copies of the city paper containing notices of boarding places, rooms to rent, etc., and by this means place themselves in correspond ence with the parties directly.” JVe reter the above to those who will la-ke boarders, or rent houses or rooms this season, and we arc sure it will be to the/.r advantage to profit by the hint given by the agent, who is certainly in a position to know. Ad vertise your wants by all menus. To Give Away. Mr. F, N, Lohnsteiu has struck di't jn a new lute^cd is giving away some >f the most popular sheet music of the day, comprising tho following ilt'ccs: "You and I,” "Then You’ll Remember Me,” ‘‘At Tho Ferry" and ‘Lullaby Soeg” from Erminie. Call tad get one or more pieces of this nu8ic. The New Jail Enclosed. A substantial double fence, or stock- de, eleven tect high, is being built round the entire new jail lot. Even hough a prisoner by some means es- apef from the jail, it will be O easy matter for him to scale the ncJosure. ports that Have had Their Day. Yesterday a reporter came across a limber of old pairs of roller skates at bad been stored away for a long me. They l*cre covered with dust id rust, but nevertheless reminded mof the time whsn the skating nk croze was at its height in Thom- villc, and throughout tho country, ike base ball, roller skating has had s day in Thomasvillc, and other nusement have taken their place in spular favor. YomKippur. To-day is a very holy and sacred day with all Jews. All business is laid aside. An exchange, speaking of the day, says: “Prior to this, ten days ol penitence are spent in examining one’s self thor. oughly and in earnest prayer tor abso lution from all sins committed witting ly or unwittingly during the past year. As a fitting climax comes the great day of atonement, on which the record ot the Book of Life is closed tor a year. In this book the recording an gel has written the good and bad deeds of each individual. Now a new page is opened, and the day of atonement is set :• part as a day of fasting ; neither food nor Brink is permitted to pass the lips of the pious Hebrew for twenty four hours. In orthodox synagogues abroad, the members of the congregation will be praying in their burial robes of spotless linen; no shoes are upon ilieir feet and everything bears the stamp ot ut most solemnity. The wearing of shrouds is symbolical of the burial of their sin* without the slightest possibil ity of re-urrection at any time to con front them. The business places of most of the Hebrews are closed to-day. The School Days A.re Here Again’. And we respectfully call attention of parents to our excellent stock of IEs3©37*S CL Misses searvicaTole School Siloes, bought cheaply and to be sold cheaply. Satisfaction with every pair. L. - B. - M. - H. The New Colored Baptist Church. Tho members of the colored Bap tist church with a little outside as sistance, arc building what will he, when completed, quite a handsome building. The uew church is to be of brick, aud will be 100 by 10 feet, and fronts on Calhoun street with side entrance on Madison. Already tho walls are beyond the first floor, which will he used as a Sunday school room. Quito a force of hands are at work on the building. “Col. Robt. G. Mitchell, of Thomas, will be a candidate for President of the Senate when the Legislature con vencs. We hope ho will be elected. As th s Cairo Georgian expresses it, ‘the mantle of the able DuBignon could not fall upon worthier should er^,’ or words to that effect.” The above from the Bainbridge Democrat shows the drift of public sentiment. Mr. Mitchell is receiving letters of substantial encouragement from every section of the state. County Debts in Georgia. The bonded debt of the 137 coun ties in this Btatc is 8399,000, an in crease of §270,400 since 1880. Tho increase is due to new issues of im provement bonds iu different counties, Chatham county nlotio having issued 8100,000 worth for a new court house. But $399,000 is a very small indebt edness for 137 counties, about 83,000 each, compared with other states like Virginia, North Carolina, South Car olina, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Kentucky and Tennessee, where the average indebtedness of counties is from SID,000 to 850,000 each. There are 2,728 counties in tho United States and jtheir total bonded indebtedness is 8130,734,959, or about 824,000,000 more than it was ten years ago. This would be an averago debt of 848,000 to each county. Georgia’s gross county indebtedness is put at 8405,0G0, or about 83,500 to each county. It is less than tjiat of any other southern state except Louisians. This showing is a good one, aud proves that thp counties have no debt, bonded or float ing, that they cannot easily pay.— New*. Purchase! of Sflyor. Washington, Sept. 2 2.—The amount of silver offered for sale to the treasury to-day aggregated 1,035,000 ounces, and the amount purchased 250,000 ounces at $1.56.
