WANTED.
A good job printer. Must be sober
steady, and understand the business.
V It would be well for Keed to keep
an eye on Kilgore’s toot.
Mr. Tom Burney has started a
movement to erect a monumet to the
late Col. Lamar. Col. Lamar was a
brilliant journalist.
A Cork paper, in describing an in
terval of peace in a stormy public
meeting, said: “For some time a
great calm raged.”
The silence of the Constitution, in
the war being waged against General
Gordon, is very audible. It can be
he.ird from Dade to Chatham.
The papers are dropping lottery ad
vertisements like hot cakes. No pa
per containing one of these advertise
ments will be allowed to pass through
the mails.
Liverpool, Sept. 24.—Among the
passengers on the steamer Gcrmantic,
which sailed hence to-day for New
York, are the Comte do Paris and
party.
Charleston, Sept. 23.—Mr. Henry
D. Howren, the celebrated evangelist
and ex newspaper man, is lying at the
point of death at 102 Tradd street in
this city.
Tho New York World is authority
for the statement that all the estate
of the late Henry W. Grady has been
placed in the hands of his widow and
amounts to 8175,000.
The Atlanta correspondent ol the
News reports that a movement is on
foot to bring out several candidates
against Gordon, hoping in this way
to split up the vote of the state. It
won’t win. Gordon will get there.
Reed made a rampant, bitter sec
tional speech, in Philadelphia, on
Tuesday night. He poured out
volumes of venom on the South.
Being fat and bull-necked, there is
a chance that paralysis may yet strike
him.
Read Gordon’s letters on indepen
dents. He is for the men nominated
for the legislature, whether they are
for him or not. That’s the kind of a
democrat John B. Gordon ,is. And
yet they are trying to beat him,
simply because he does not endorse
tho sub-treasury. When, we may
ask, did this new plan become a test
of one’s democracy ?
Stopped His Ad.—Two weeks ago
we suggested to the public the propri
ety of putting a hempen neck-tie on
Dan Smith, the proprietor of the Last
Chance Saloon, and swinging him up
to a limb. It seemed to us to be the
' best way to work a reform in his every
day demeanator. Dan was advertising
with us, and he ordered his ad out.
Result: Dan Smith is now back at the
Kansas State Prison to serve h's un-
expired term.
There’s a morai in this. We pro
pose to take advertisements in a busi
ness way, and as a business invest,
meat. No matter who is advertising
GOV. GORDON’S DEMOCRACY.
He is Straight out in the Organized.
The following letter shows how firm
an organi/.ed Democrat Governor
Gordon is:
Mr. W. II. CM, Gainesville, Ga.
My Dear Sir Your cordial letter
of the 23rd has just reached me, and
I reply at once. I assure you that I
appreciate most heartily the loyal
interest which you and others among
my friends in Hall county are mani
festing in my race for'the senate. I
must, however, say to you frankly that
I should regret to see any break or
division in the ranks of the democracy
produced by placing in the field can
didates to run against the regular
nominee of the parly.
I should of course regret to lose the
voles of the two Alliancemen, who
hive been nominated, and I don’t see
that they could, as honorable men,
fail to support me, after hiving
pledged themselves to do so at the
time they were nominated.
But I repeat in all frankness that 1
could not counsel placing indepen
dent candidates in the field against
regular nominees, even though I were
sure that by so doing I would be
absolutely certain of securing both
votes.
I hope, therefore, that all my friends
will unite in giving a cordial support
to the candidates who have deceived
the regular democratic nomination.
Be assured, however, that I appre
ciate most sincerely the cordial in
terest which you and my other friends
in Hall county have manifested in my
welfare. With thanks for your kind
letter and with best wishes, I am,
Sincerely and gratefully yours,
J. B. Gordon.
A Candidate for Senator Dies.
Mr. John Herndon, of Echols coun
ty, who was recently nominated from
the 6th Senatorial district, composed
of the counties of Echols, Lowndes
and Berrien, died very suddenly of
heart disease, at his home near Sta-
tenville, on Monday night. Echols
county has named as her choice, Mr.
Jesse P. Prescott, present clerk of the
Superior court of Echols county. This
action was taken on' account of the
time being too short to call a conven
tion of tho three counties. All of tho
Echols county delegates to tho late
convention were present, participated
and endorsed the action of the mass
meeting naming Mr. Prescott. In all
probability he will be elected, as it is
Echols’ time to name the candidate.
Hit ’Em Again.
Washington, Sept. 24''—The post-
office department is informed that the
Louisiana Lottery Company, ^having
been forced to abandon the use of the
mails by the recent act of Congress,
has availed itself of the law which al
lows express companies to cany mail
matter enclosed in government stamp
ed envelopes. ;The law authorities the
postmaster general to issue an order,
in his discretion, forbidding companies
from carrying mail matter in govern
ment stamped envelopes, and it is
highly probable that an order of this
kind will shortly be issued.
Harrison’s Vacation Ended.
Cresson Strings, Pa., Sept.. 24.—
The presidential party left here this
morning at 11 o’clock in a private car
attached to the day express, which is
due in Washington about 8 o’clock.
The President enjoyed his sojourn in
the mountains very much, and will
probably make Cresson another visit
next year.
