Several popular commercial men wore in the city yesterday. / Thomasville will probably get the official announcement of her popula tion shortly. Watch our advertising columns and you will see where the best bargains are to be had.* The .why to increase your' business: Advertise. This advice, while free, is good. Turn out and vote the straight dem ocratic ticket from Nortlien down, next Wednesday. \ V Indiana leads in tho number of vis itors up to date. There are’ ton or twelve parties here from that state, already- - Thomas county ought to poll a Tull vote next Wednesday for the state ticket, and for Mitchell, Parker and Ivey. Remember that the election ftfr governor, state house officers, senator and members of the legislature, comes off next Wednesday. The Thomasville Guano Company is getting ready to manufacture the famous “Home Compound,” this sea son. No guano gave more universal satisfaction the past year. Mr. James Watt received a tele gram yesterday morning announcing the death of Mr. Dukes, a prominent merchant at Valdosta. Mr. Watt no tified Mr. Dukes’ brother, who is a merchant at Chastain, in this county, by carrier Leb Dots. Editor Tim*s-Extmphsk / We are having more rain, which is hindering the farmers in cotton gath ering. Owing to the shortness of the cot ton crop in this section, the farmers are holding their staple for a better price. Hope they will get it. We are sorry to note the continued suflerings of Dr. A. B. Cooke, from a carbuncle on his shoulder. Our best wishes are for liis speedy recovery. Miss Duskio .Futch, one af Jeffer son county’s fair young ladies, is vis- ftSnjr relatives near this place. We wish her a pleasant time. Wo are sorry to learn that Mr. J. 0. Culpepper, of Athens, is in danger of losing his finger, caused from put ting nitric acid on it. Hope he will recover from the misfortune. On last evening we found ourselves , assembled at the residence of Mr. Wm. Singletary, enjoying a social cuter taiument. After some hours happily spent, wo all left for our homes. The moonlight ride was very much enjoy ed by all, especially tho writer. We are especially glad to see so fwfmy Sahhath schools over the coun try. In almost every community there is a Sunday school. There is a great work for the Sunday school to - do. We are aware of .the fact that out-best’men and women were raised in Sunday schools, aDd in order to have good men and women when they are gone, we must go to work in time, for tho hope of tno welfare of our country is depending on the rising generation. * Ochlockonee Dots. Oh, beautiful, sad September day, When the little birds sing their lay, I delight to wander thro' memory’s hall And happy bygone days recall. Well, Mr. Editor, as I have been absent for two weeks, I guess I had better come again. We are having rain in abundance, and the farmers are looking gloomy over tho cotton crop.' Tho potato crop is fine. Ed McMil lan has the brag potato of the season; it weighed just two pounds aud five ounces. Mr. Hardy Hay left Monday for Baker county, to attend an associa tion. V Misses Olivia Lindsay, Minnie Sin- gletnry, Emma Perry ami Belle Bul lock have returned from their summer trip, to the delight of their many friends. Each reported as having had a delightful time. Politics are hot. This is a demo cratic town and county. Your hum ble scribe is a democrat, though ho has never cast a vote, but if ho lives till next June, he will be old enough, and be in readiness to east a vote for Cleveland. Mr. J. A. Chastain has been ap pointed postmaster at thin place, aud will, we hear, in a few days, lake charge of the office. Dr. Boston 1ms been postmaster here for the- past fif teen years, and was always faithful in the discharge of every duty. While we regret that the doctor loses tho of fice, we warmly welcome Mr. Chas tain in our midst, and feel that he too will give satisfaction. Some people wi'l kick, but deblock once is marching on. R. C. Jrckson is having his nice cottage home on upper Broad painted which is quite an improvement. Tho boys have given It. A. Perry quite an appropriate name. He now answers to “Turkey Red.” Messrs. A. M. Watson. G. M. Bul lock, L. R. Sills and “Turkey Red” went out Monday on a big turkey hunt. They found the turkeys but failed to kill anything but time. Wo had a hearty laugh at the hoys telling why they failed to kill ’em. Mrs. Wost, of Cuthbert. who was called to the bedside of her. sick daughter, Mrs. R. C. West, arrived Tuesday. We wish Mrs. West a speedy recovery. Work on J. E. Stephens’ residence and J. \i. Beverly’s store is being rap idly pushed forward. Work on Dr. Boston’s residence has been suspended for the past few weeks, owing to severe sickness in the family of tho contractor. W. J. White, of Ala., is at homo with his family, for a while. Miss Emma Perry is somewhat in disposed this week. Miss t Annie Hurst, of Thomaavi'lc, is visiting relatives in town. “Why don’t you trado with mol” said a merchant to a countryman. “Because,” was the characteristic re ply. "you have never asked me, sih I hove looked in the papers for an in vitation in tho shape of an advertise ment, but in vain. I never go where I am not invited, sir.” Moral: Advertise in the Times Ex TERPRI3E. Subscribed. Kissing the Book. Have you ever been a witness in tho police court, and thought, as tho little black bible was passed for you to kiss, how many times in a year tho the book docs the same service? Ne groes, tramps, vagabonds, drunkards and high toned people, all press their lips to its covers. Some merely glknce at it; some kiss it with a lie upon their lips, and sometimes the officers fancy they sec tears in the eyes of some poor wreck, whoso thoughts of better days arc awakened by the little bible. It is said that diseases have been contracted by kissing bibles indiscriminately used in courts. For this, and other reasons, many decline to kiss the book, but simply “affirm.” It certainly is not pleasant, when you corao to think about it, to kiss a book to which polluted lips have been glued. The fragrancy of Shepard’s B. B. Cologne is as delicate as the rose, and this, with it i lasting qualities, makes it the most desirable peiiume in the market.
