The News says the cigarette habit
is on the increase among the boys in
Savannah. And yet there is a law
in Georgia against selling cigarettes
to minors. But this, like many other
laws, is evaded.

A curious religious war has broken
oit between two Mohamtncdan sects
in India. The Sunis hold that the
word “amen” shouldbc pronounced in
a low and reverent tone of voice,
while the Shias claim that it should
be called out iu a loud, triumphant
tone of voice like a battle cry or a
shout of victory. And they arc pro
ceeding to cut each others throats iu
the most npproved fashion over the
dispute. Religious fanaticism has
shed oceans of blood.
A Split In an Alliance.
The Burke county alliance held a
meeting on Thursday, and during the
session the question of indorsing J.
P. Brinson, independent candidate for
the senate, was brought up. Twelve
lodges were represented, and seven of
them favored indorsing Sir. Brinson,
consequently there was a split.
During the meeting a difficulty oc
curred between the vice president of
the county alliance, Dr. Chandler,
and Mr. Bell, president of the sub-
alliance, in which Mr. Bell was seri
ously cut. *
Where Scott Sleeps.
Who has not read the “Waverly”
novels t The memory of Scott will
live, long after his monument has
crumbled into dust. Edgar L. Wake-^
man thus describes the burial place of
Scott’s greatest minstrel:
You feel more than you can see at
Dryburgh, The whole place is in
stinct with repose. The horizon is
close, not a half mile away n any di
rection. It is fringed with the boughs
and verdure of sheltering trees, save
where, tar to the south, the Eildons
peer down from above their cloud
mists into the sunny copse. The
Tweed, moving in silence for miles
above, litre sweeps wide and grandly
over gleaming shallows, and sing its
endless song just at the edg: of the
Abbey. You come to the place
through a hushed and silent avenue,
ankle- 'cep in the spring-time with haw
thorn blossoms white as snow. In
these graying days their place is filled
by the browns and puces of rusting
drift from the beech, elm and syca
more. Only the lodge-keepers habi
tation reminds one of earthly activities.
Nature alor.e holds sway, bloom and
birds, ,grasses and vines, odor and
song, russet walls and emerald masses
of moss, oriels of ivy, fillets of vines,
pointed arches of roses, towers of trees
leaping from he old walls themselves,
reach the eye and sense tenderly,
slumberously, pulsing with hush and
balm. Melrose exalts. Dryburgh
soothes. The entire spot is ruin merg
ed into Elysium, hallowed by one hum
ble grave. And so sweet and hushed
is all, that even your reverenci for the
ever-silent disappears; lor you feel
that* your mighty friend lies here as
on the bosom of the land he so loved
and immortalized, and that Scott only
sleeps while sweetly all nature-songs
to him are sung.
Change Your Church.
Last week Rev. Herbert E. Ryer-
son was arraigned before the Michigan
Methodist conference to answer to the
charge of “habitual use of tobacco."
The Detroit Free Press reports that
he appeared “agitated and much cha
grined at the situation.” To the bish
op’s question whether the accusation
was true or not, Brother Byerson,
“with head upon his breast and eyes
looking on the floor,” said :
•1 have used it ever since I can
remember, and use it now. I have
tried time and again to quit, and have
done so for a year at a time, hut I
can’t hold out. I know it is wrong,
and I will try to give it up.”
The bishop invoked for his assist
ance “the Great Helper, who would
not suffer us to be tempted above that
we are able to bear,” and Brother
Rycrson was released with tho state
ment that unless he stopped tho uso
of tobacco entirely by next year he
would have to retire from the Meth
odist ministry.—Chronicle.
Brother Rycrson should change bis
church, attach himself to some ortho
dox body which docs not hold it to be
a sin to smoke a cigar.

A Counterfeit two Dollar Bill.
The secret service department of
the Government at Washington City
has issued a notice that a dangerous
counterfeit of the issue of tho 82
silver certificate has been discovered
by an employee of tho Government.
It is of tho check letter "C,” and has
a small round pink seal. Tho coun
terleit is said to bo the closest imita^
lion of a gcuuiuc United States note
that has appeared in years. Here
is the way to detect the little fraud
bill: The paper has no distributed
fibre nud uo parallel silk threads.
The gcuuine note has both. In the
words, “Register of the Treasury,” in
the counterfeit the “i” in “Register’
is not dotted, neither is there a period
after the word “Treasury,”
Mr. Brown, of tho Boston firm of
Brown, Durrcll & Co., a prominent
Republican, thus frees his mind:
“Tom Reed is a fraud and McKin
ley is a fraud, aud the McKinley bill
is the greatest outrage ever perpetra
ted on the people of the United
States. I have voted the republican
ticket all my life, but I tell you that
the man who made up the new tariff
bill and the men who have voted for
it are frauds, and I don’t care who
knows that I say it.”
Aud this emanates from the “hub,”
the cradle of republicanism. Things
must be getting badly out of joint
with g. 0. p. in Massachusetts.
