The Empire State of the South will hold some grand expositions this fall; notably at Macon, Atlanta, Augusta. Columbus and Rome. Messrs. L. Steyerman & Bro liavo new ad in this morning. They have a superb stock of dry goods, clothing, etc., and their prices me low. Read tlio ad and givo them a call. Contractor White was hurt yester day morning, by being thrown from a young horse ho was riding. The animal fell on Mr- White’s leg. The limb was painfully hurt, hut no hones wero broken. We uro pleased to see that Messrs. Newborn und Lamb have established a carriage stand on corner of Broad and Jackson.. This will prove quite a convenience to the public. Patron ize the carriage stand. Only a short time will intervene, before the papers will announce that the legislature has elected General John B. Gordon, of tho sixties, to the Untcd States Senate* This old soldier enthusiasm cannot be downed. —Boston World. The verdict'of the coroner’s jury, which investigated the killing of Gil ley, by the marshal of Boston, last Friday, exonerated the officer from any blame. The negro was advan cing on the officer with a drawn knife, when lie was shut. Wc understand that the Rev. Robert II. Harris lias declined tho flattering unanimous call which was tjcently given him by the Baptist Church in Athens. His church in Columbus, one of the largest in the state, did not want to give him up. Miss Florence Jones, a most excel lent young lady, who resides a few miles southeast of Boston, leaves Mon day for Albany. Ga., where she goes to accept a position in the academy nt that place. Miss Jones has many friends here, whoso best wishes will attend her. Tho World congratulates Albany on tho accession of this young lady in their midst.—Boston World. The new descriptive pamphlet got ten out by the management of the Piney Woods and Mitchell, is very handsome and much more elaborate than any yet published by any hotel here. The book contains twenty four pages of interesting matter about Thomasville, tho climate, and other dcsirablo information. The illustra tions, of which thcro are ten, are very attractive, and the subjects entirely new. Thousands of the books will be distributed throughout the North, East and West. Order Iron Hall. Branch No. 447 Order Iron Hall is ono of the most flourishing bene ficiary associations of this city. The prompt manner in which it pays its weekly benefits in case of sickness, and its life policies to the relatives of deceased members, recommend it to popular favor. Quite recently J. S. Evans, a member of the order, died, and his wife was promptly paid 8500 as the following card will show; Savannah, Ga., Sept. 1,1890. Mr, H. S. Colding, Accountant Branch No. 447, Order Iron Hall: Dear Sin—I hereby acknowledge receipt of the money paid me on ac count of the death ot my husband, J. S. Evans, nnd I wish tr. express thanks to the officers of the branch for their prompt action in the matter. I am yours very respectfully, Mrs. J. K. Evans. The branch in this city was estab lished in March, 1887. Since the date of its organization many members have received weekly benefits for sickness to the amount of $25 per week. The Iron Hall not only pays $25 per week sick benefits, but at death it pays $500 to the legal heirs of its deceased members, and should the member survive to the end of the seventh year ho receives $1,000, less what may have been paid to him for sick benefits during that period. Tho The amount paid bymembers is small compared with what must be paid to standard insuranco companies, and the order has the additional recom mendation of insuring ono’s health as well as his life. It is a beneficiary association that strongly recommends itself to poor men as well as men of moderate means.—Nows. Tho order in Thomnsville, wc un derstand, is in a very flourishing con dition It lias been a wonder to many, how the Iron Hall pays out the amounts which it docs, and still keeps up, hut it docs it all the same. > A Slim Attendance. The Mayor had a slim attendance before him in the police court yester day. The usual Saturday night of fenders failed to show up. Eugcno Chapel, a dark complected individual, was up for fighting n boy smaller than himself. Ho became angry with the little boy nnd struck him several times. He was fined $1, or two days. The Mayor beat all his former records for fast time in this case, by hearing six witnesses nnd rendering judgment in seven minutes from the time the case was called. Albert Suttou was up for failing to work tho streets or pay for a substi tute. The fine in such cases is fixed by tho council, and not left to the dis cretion of the Mayor. Sutton will have to pay $7 for his neglect of this duty. Let ’er Whistle. Wo take the following brace of rail* road items from the last issue of the Tnllnhosscan : “Listen for the whistle. You’ll soon hear the rumble of trains from tho north nnd south as well as from the cast and west. Tho A. T. & G. and the Tallahassee Northern will both be completed in time to haul next years crops.” ‘•The Augusta, Tallahassee and Gulf Railroad has been sold to a wealthy English syndicate, and we aro reliably informed work will com mence again at an early date, and will be pushed to completion.” Tho whistle of one or both of these roads would be a welcome sound in Thomasville. The Augusta Road. The Chronicle of Sunday, says: “Vice-President James U. Jack- soil says the prospects of the Augusta and West Florida road are bright iudeed, and the success of his recent mission in New York insures rapid work on the road. Col. Bailey, the president, will return to Augusta front New York in a few days.” This will be welcome news to the friends of this enterprise. The road would put Thomasville away out of tho woods. Gov. Bob Taylor, a few years ago, fiddled himself into the governship of his state, and now it is said he is “ros ining” his bow, for the United States Senatorship. Tennesseans have great respect for a man who plays he fiddle well. The School Days Are Here Again.
