Another attempt has been made on

Washington will be deserted this
week. The statesmen will leave for
home, many of them lo repiir their
fences.
In all probability, to day at noon,
the Speakers gavil will sound the re
quiem of the long session of the 51st
congress.
How They Dress in Heaven.
Spriritualism has an unaccouutable
fascination for some people and causes
them to do the most absurdly foolish
things. But how spiritualism or any
thing else could induce any sane man
to believe that the angels in heaven
wear expensive finery for which they
require a liberal supply of money to
pay, is beyond the ken of ordinary
understanding. Yet that is what a
plausible spiritualist did with John
Hill, of Carbondalc, l’a., and by im
pressing him with the belief that his
dead wife was unhappy in heaven
because she could not wear as fine
raimeDt as the other angels, actually
pursuaded him to place under a stone,
designated by the medium, several
hundred dollars to satisfy her celestial
Bocial ambition. It all very promptly
disappeared, of course, and now Mr.
Hill has’ brought suit to recover it,
with poor chances of success. What
fools these mortals be!—News.
If it gets out that millinery bills
are to be footed in the hereafter there
will be a panic among husbands.
It Served Him Right.
Boys who smoke cigarettes should
note the following incident: At
prominent business house the other
day a boy probably 13 years of age
stepped in aud made application for
a position.
The proprietor looked at the boy
and gave him a negative answer. The
biy, who was smoking a cigarette,
walked to the door and started out,
when the business man called him
back, inquired his name and then said
to him : ‘‘Young man, allay me as nn
elder to give you some advice. The
next time you want a position do not
go into a house smoking oue of those
things. When you are as old as I mu
you will appreciate the advice I now
give.”
After the boy had retired the busi
ness man said to a bystander: ‘T need
several boys and I like thatoue’s face,
but I would not employ any boy who
smokes those things.”
This ought to be read by every boy
in Georgia.
Getting ’em Down Fine.
The News sizes up the average can
didate thusly:
Despitetheir belligerent and im
placable hatred of each other the in
effable affection that all the candidates
profess for the lone farmer, and their
tenderly solicitous paternal anxiety for
his temporal welfare, is positively
beautiful to comtemplate.
The State fair.
The people of Georgia should not
forget that they are, or should be,
interested in the great stale fair at
Macon. It will open on the 22nd of
this month, aud will, without doubt,
bo the most extensive exhibition of
Georgia’s industries and products ever
witnessed at a etato fair. The people
of Macon are aroused. They are
leaving nothing undone to make it
the grand success which it should be.
Thomas county and South Georgia
should be there by the thousand ; and
they should be there with the product
of field and gardeD, aud with their
stock. The premium list is large
and liberal. Thomas county has,
in days gono by, carried off yards of
blue ribbon” from state fair, sand she
can do it again.
We take the following interesting
resume of the fair from the Macon
Telegraph:
“Wednesday, October 22, t.ie date
appointed for the opening of the fair,
will be Georgia day. All the mem
bers of the Georgia legislature have
been invited to attend, and it is
reasonably expected that a large por
tion of them will respond. The can
didates for the speakership of the
House and the presidency of the
Senate have also been invited and
will attend.
"These candidates will speak on
that day, and ns it will be just before
the opening of the legislative session,
this will be a capital opportunity for
them to press their respective claims
where they can be seen and heard by
representatives and people alike.
This gathering of legislators will at
tract an immense throng of people
who will bo more than ever impressed
with the importance of the state fair
as a state institution.
“Thursday, the second day, will be
national day. The members of con
gross from Georgia and the Georgia
congressional candidates will be in
attendance, and have been invited to
make addresses.
“On Friday, which will be Macon
day, the trades’ display .will be held.
An effort will bo made to induce the
members and candidates for congress
to remain over and take part in the
procession, which will be » part of the
display.
“Saturday will be children’s day.
“The fifth day of the fair, Monday,
will bo education day.
“Tuesday, October 28, will bo al
liance day, and the attendance is
expected to bo immense. Tillman,
the great alliance candidate lor gov
ernor of South Carolina, has been
invited to conic, and Ben Terrell, the
national lecturer of the alliance, will
also be here on that day.
“Wednesday will be Mason’s day.
The grand lodge will then bo in ses
sion. Grand Master Davidson will
make an address, and the members
of the lodge will attend the fair in a
body.
“On Thursday, the 8th, and last
day of the fair, there will be a variety
of attractions. The programme for
this day has not yet been decided
upon, but the matter will probably
be settled at the committee meeting
to-day.
"It is proposed to liavo the world'
renowned divine, Rev. T. DeWitt
Talmagc, deliver a lecture during
that day. Of course everybody will
want to see and hear that remarkable
man, and as the lecture will probably
be given in the day time, there will
he much risk of a crush in the crowd.”

Mr. i lenry , Watterson, the brilliant
editor of the Louisville Courier Jour
nal, has been speaking to the people
of Boston. In closing he said: |
“I am Fere lo put my foot upon the
falsehood that the people of the South
are doing anything, or have done any
thing, that you yourself would not
nave done had your places been ex
changed. I am here to remind you
that the sin of slavery was, in the be
ginning, a divided sin, but that the
cost and the curse of it have fallen
solely upon us, and that we have ex
piated it.’’
There isn’t one southern man in ten
thousand, who wouldjliaves lavcTy re-es
tablished if he could. The war over slav
ery is a thing of the past. The South
is loyal to ihejwhole country, and bids-
the ex-slaves god speed in the work of
preparing themselves for citizenship.
The southern people are to-day the
truest and best friends of the negro.
