ATA, OA., A Training S.hool for Boys. Ciiaa. M. K.ir,, Snp’t. From Washington. Washington, Sept. .'>0.—Messrs. T. W Glenn. Pat Calhoun ami Hum phreys Ctistleinau, of Atlanta, today invited ilio President, Mr. Blaine ami Senator Daniil ol Virginia to the Piedmout Exposition. Mr. Harrison declined, staling that it would be im possible for him to go. Mr. Blaine gave no definite answer, but said if possible to leave Washington between Oct. Sand Nov. J, be would accept. Senator Daniel accepted the invita tion to deliver the address on October 23d. Tho nomination of David A. Dud ley, the negro whose name was sent to the Senate six months ago, for post master at Americas, was withdrawn by the President today. A white postmaster will bo appointed, as Buck recommends one. Joseph E. Doyle was today ap pointed postmaster at Savannah. He will probably be confirmed to morrow and take charge of the office at once. The Job Completed. The infamous tariff bill has passed, and i ow only awaits the president's sgnalurc. Senator Carlisle made a powerlul speech against it, and every democrat voted io defeat the meas ure. The three P’s .Plumb, Paddock and Pettigrew, all pronounced repub licans, voted with the democrats against the bill. The Largest Check Ever Drawn. A minor controvcrsity has arise" about the “largest check" that was ever written. It was an jounced that to the check drawn the other day by i lie Great Indian Peninsular rail way company on the London and County bank for .1:1,250,000 belongs the distinc’ion. It was at the same time stated ihat one drawn by Van derbilt for .1:700,000 had hitherto headed the list. The statement, how ever, is inaccurate (says the Bullion- ist.) At least four of the London clearing banks have paid checks for considerably over X2,000,000 on more lhan one occasion. A few years ago the Manchester Ship Canal Company, when buying out the 3ridgeivater trus tees drew one check for £1,750,000 on Glyn & Co., and this document can still be seen at the offices of the ship canal company, Deansgaie, Man chester, where it is framed as a curi osity. A check for an enormous amount passed through the “House’’ in 1879 or 1880. The amount was upward of £3,250,000 and was in set tlement of an arbitration award. When the Alabama claim was settled, and the Halifax fisheries question was de cided, large ainoun s of money chang ed hands. NOTICE. At the suggestion of the fire insur ance companies of New York city, a machinistjnamcd Paul Hodge, a res - ident of Gotham, also, constructed a steam fire engine, which was first pub licly tested 111 front of the New York city hall, in March, 1841. It was a total failure. Then the board of direc tors offered a gold medal for the best method of applying steam to the pro pulsion of water fot fire purposes. This prize was won by John Ericsson, tlie maker of die “Monitor,” recently deceased and mere recently removed to his native country. The official re port has the following pnrapraph in re gard to Frisson's engine; ‘The points of excellence, as thus' narrowed down, were found to belong to an en gine weighing less than two and a half tons, which lias the power ol 108 men and will throw 3,000 pounds of water per minute to a height of 105 feet through a nozzle one and a hall inchc3 in diameter.
