A writer in the Topeka Western
School Journal says that the children
of New Yoik city public schools pro
nounce “murmur,’' “muymuy
“bird,'' “boid“murder,” ‘‘-nuyder
and “park,’’ ‘‘pawk.” It is told of a
Boston man that he spoke of some
thing as “tne soss of all the evil,” and
of a New York educator that he refer
red to -l the imperial slate of New
York.” In Philadelphia we are told
that the school children pronounce
“no,” “now “go,” “gow “road,”
“roud"boat,” “bout“day,”
“dahee ;” “rain,” “raheen,” etc. In
Washington i school boy will speak
of “the conah of Fohtecnth and H
streets,” juite as a matter ot course.
And when you get used to the Missis
sippi Valley, you will hear such words
as "call” and "laugh’’ pronounced with
a flatness of the valley itself. It might
be similarly shown that nearly every
locality indulges in some peculiarity of
pronunciation, and the question there,
fore arises: Where is absolutely pure
English spoken '—New York Tribune.
Edwin : And you’ll always be true
to me. Angelina? Angelina: Why
do you doubt me, Edwin ? Oh, you’re
too good to be true.—Life.
