A New Book,
Southern War Songs, Comp Fire, Patri
otic and Sentimcii'ni, collected and arranged
l.y W. L. Fagan, of Alabama. Numerous
illustrations. Price $3.50. New \ urk: M.
T. Uiclmrdson * Co., Publishers, 1890,
hjs comptiecs by all odds the most
complete collection of Southern War
Songs ever brought togetlicr in one
volume; in fact no attempt ever seems
to have been made to present oven a
limited number of these songs in a
manner worthy of their merits. The
illustrations, by one of New Yorks
most talented artists, are numerous
and spirited. Tho author in his pre
face says:
‘•Emotional literature is always a
correct exponent of public sentiment,
and these songs index tho passionate
sincerity of the South at tbetimo they
jvcrc written,”
The book is eudorsed by many dis
tinguished Southern men, including
Senators Carlisle am] Blackburn of
Kentucky, Senator Brown of Geor
gia, Senator Pugh of Alabama, Hon.
Charles F. Crisp of Georgia, General
Beauregard and General Longstreet.
Senator Brown says in his comments
on this elegant volume;
“Whether the reader belonged to
tho Federal or tho Confederate army,
he will find in the songs a deep vein
of patriotic sentiment, which must
command hi* admiration.” Senator
Cockrell, of Missouri, says:—“’Tis
tho first and only collection of the
sort I have ever scon that is complete
and satisfactory,”
A group of Confederate flags in
colors forms n striking frontispiece.
This book seems particularly adapt
ed for Birthday and Holiday presents.
Women nnd men possessed of a
good address ought to do well selling
this attractive work.
Good Men for a Town.
The only men of worth to a town,
says un exchange, or community arc
those who forget their own selfish
ends long enough, and who are liberal
enough in their ideas, to encourage
every public and private enterprise;
to push all projects calculated to build
up the town and enhance its impor
tance, The enterprise nnd push of a
town or community constitute tho
foundation of its permanent success.
A town may as well prepare for its
funeral as to becomo indifferent to
the enterprises in its midst. Men
who come to a town to make it their
future home, who caunot look far
enough before them to see that money
placed judiciously in a public enter
prise will he increased an hundred
fold in tho appreciation of their prop
erty, are to ho pitied. They are of
the class who are ready to take all
they can of some one clsu’s building
enterprise, but they arc not willing
to do anylhiug themselves.—Ex.
Mr. L. H. Jergers friends, and
that iucludcs everyone in the city,
were glad to sec him on tho streets
again yesterday, after having been
confined to his home by indisposition
tor some time
There are at present fount; cn pris
oners in jail charged witli various
crimes. The most of them are await
ing the approaching tcun of the Su
perior court when the cases will com c
off.
| THOMAS COUNTY PHOS-
| PHATE.
Desciption of the Beds and the
Character of the Deposits,
(’uiTT’.'poii'li'ut BnvAhtmlt tf'cV-s,
TitoMASViLtfc, Oct. 3.—'lhe News
correspondent has just returned from
visit from the phosphate beds <
Thomas county, and an inspection (
the deposits. The Foy beds, near the
line of the Savannah, Florida and
Western railroad, nnd about eight
miles from Thomasville, is one of the
principal ones, though the Eason bed
near by ir. quite as rich and extensive.
In reaching the Foy place, the rock
was not fopmj plong any creek or ra
vine, or sink or gulley, nor even on
broken ground. It lies beneath an
old oat field, without any indications
above ground ot its presence beneath.
The surface is not rocky, nor even
pebbly. It is ihe common 6andy land
for about twelve or fifteen inches, un-
derlayed, not with the typicial Georgia
red clay, but with a dark, reddish san
dy clay, that crumbles easily when dry
This deposits is from five to fifteen
feet in depth.
There is no appearance of the white
chalky substance generally found be
neath all this section,
The phosphate rock is not touud in
layers, or veins. It is said to.be found
‘•in pockets,” but that expression is
misleading. It occurs imbedded in
an absolutely capricious manner, all
through the reddish, dark-brown clay
above mentioned. The rock itself is
mostly white, and roughly resembles
lime rock, The lumps are found frost
the size of a pea to that ot a half-bush
el measure, and of very irregular
shapes, some being rough and jagged,
others with nearly smooth surfaces.
A large pit has been dug, from which
several carloads p> the rock have been
taken. These nodules or infliyidual
rocks are sometimes found alone,
sometimes in groups, and at other
times they are absent altogether for
several square feet of play. At no
place are there more than a small part
of the entire body of both necessary to
be removed. The larger pieces of
rock can be readily thrown out by the
miners. Tfrft trover peices will have
to be sifted out, The clay which he?
furnished a resting place tor this val-
uablc mineral for so many ages, is it
self phosphatic and it is said can be
Used in making a low grade ot ferlili-
zer.
Excavation above mentioned lies
near the dirt road, which at that point,
by many years of use, has cut its way
down several feet through the yielding
clay. It was the outcropping of the
phosphatic material in the road cut
that first drew attention to its pres
ence.
This particular formation is a pecu
liar one, and easily distinguished, even
by the unskilled eye, fromthe common
lime and flint racks which occur
abundantly throughout all this section.
It may be of interest to state that
nearly all this lime rock contains a
small percentaga of phosphatic acid,
but this does not prove its value, as
the per cent, is toe small to pay the
expense of mining and manufacturing
it. It is like gold in the gold region
in North Georgia, where every land
owner has a [gold mine; that is, gold
is found on his premises, but in very
few cases has it paid to work it.
The phosphate deposits described
above is an entirely distinct formation
from all other forms of phosphates as
found in so many localities in this
country. To the question “How
came it there ?" many answers have
been given and many theories advan
ced.
Mr. Julius Burgeviu, who has
charge of “Glen Arvcn,” has re
turned from the North. And he
didn’t return alone: he brought a
bonnic bride with him.
Married.
Mr. H. lb. Cooke, of Crisp, son of
Mrs. R. A. Cooke, and brother of
A. H. S. Cooke, of this city, was
married on the 1st, inst. to Mies Cora
Williams, daughter of Hon. Wiley
Williams, of Telfair county. The
marriage was a surprieo to his ac
quaintances and relatives here. He
has their best wishes for himself and
bride.
Mr. Clint Worrel’s splendid pair of
blacks, attached to bis hunting wagon,
and rigged out in new harness, at
tracted considerable attention on
Broad street on Saturdav.
