Must be sober nd understand the business Sunshine has put cotton on the move again. Mr. Cleveland will make some speeches in the West. The recent good weather has given an impetus to cotton picking. Patrison, it is confidently expected- will beat Quay's man for governor of Pennsylvania. Savannah has set her pegs for a million bales of cotton this year; ard she is apt to get it. The new tariff is producing consid erable excitement in Europe. And so is it in this country. Chatham county will be represented in the legislature by a farmer, a law yer and an editor. Some minister proposes to purify New York politics b. prayer. He has undertaken a mighty tough job. Cougress and the surplus both dis appeared at the same time. This looks rather suspicious. Congress should be searched. Prom the Dry Goods Economist. This is the season when the “sam ple fiend” cut of town writes in for samples of blankets, comforters and lugs. The Comte de Paris is being hand somely entertained in this country. He is a pretender to t' e throne of tht Napoleans. The Count served in 'he staff of Gen’l McClellan, during the late war. There have been some mighty poor jokes got ofi on ex-postmister Wheat. We have got off one or too very bad ones ourselves. Open confession is good for the soul—even fot the soul of an editor. Georgia leads all the states, up 'o this date, counting from Jan. ist, in the construction of railroads. Her twelve different lines show 323 miles built. Montana follows with 312 miles. Great is Georgia. The contest in many congressional districts will be red hot lrom now uutil the election. The fact that Turner his no opposition in this district, should not be an excuse for a light vote. Every democrat in the district should turn out at the November election. A movement is on foot among the managers of the World’s fair, to se cure Kilgore’s brogans—the pair worn when he kicked the congressional door down in Washington, for exhibition. They would draw. O, the Scfuth is ready to contribute her share toward making the fair a success. Augusta’s Progress. Augusta, Ga., Oct. 5.—The trade review of Augusta for the past year, made by the Chronicle, shows that Augusta’s cotton mills spun 80,000 bales of cotton during the year, pro ducing $6,000,000 worth of products. Cotton receipts were two hundred and odd thousand bales. Fertilizers man ufactured and sold amounted to $2,- * o9o,ooo. Tiie wholesale and retail grocery trade was $3,000,000. The total business was $70,000,000. Twen ty-six miles of electric railroad have b:en built and are io operation. The city is growing and prosperous. Thomas county has two bright young meu there, young men who will be beard from some day. We take the follow ing interview with Dr. Hopkins, pres ident of the school, from the last issue of the Constitution: “How is the Technological school getting along? - ’ “The outlook is more hopeful than it has been at all, so far ns the utility of the school is concerned,” said Dr. Hopkins. “Young meu linvc becu brought up to a high standard of scholarship, increased skill iu thu mechanical department; and that particular department has taken on new proportions and wider range. It is under a better condition of man agement than it has been since the school was organized, and the work shops arc more thoroughly equipped with moil and materials and tools. “The class of work that wc value most is such ns withdraws from north ern manufactures—things that are not done by southern simps. For instance, large bronze castings in the form of vault doors, and a wrought iron, scroll-work gnte for Westview cemetery, machines for making pressed brick, small machines made under direction of patentees, motors, band powers for churns and things of that sDrt. “We are making a large class of work in the way of water wheels, sanitary arrangements for the Ruttan- Smead ventilating system, and we have made hundreds of cotton plant ers under contract. “We reject vast quantities of work that wc cannot take consistently with the prime object of the institution. We nre more concerned in making men than in making thiugs; wc take just that class of work which promises the best results iu the training of young men. “Meanwhile, in the academic de partment, the institution is equipped equally with any institution iu the country. The curriculum is high, the standard of scholarship is high, discipline is mild but firm, and the aim of all our academic work is to enable the young men readily and easily to apply the knowledge they gain to practical purposes. Knowl edge in its application is tho key-note of our work. Tin: results is SIGHT. “Wc began last year to supply the country with our work in the way ot men. We graduated two students, who have gone to work in the lines indicated by the class of work done in schools. One of them is connected with the Ruttan Smead institution, and the other has taken charge of the mechanical department in the Porter institute in Charleston. “Quite a number of our young men who lmd to leave the school because of financial dfficulties have gone out and are doing admirably at good wages—two or three dollars a day. “We expect to graduate five young men this year, and the next year there will be a class of 30. “Meanwhile, tho needs of the in stitution arc increasing. Wc have ed ucated a large number ot these young men now with us beyond the facilities we can give them iu tho way of ap paratus, charts and books. One very urgent demand resting upon us now is*a library of reference books and an outfit in the department of me chanical engineering.” Bancroft’s 90th Birthday. New York, Oct. 3.—The venera ble historian, George Bancroft, to- diy celebrctated his 90th birthday at his home. FOR TAX COLLECTOR. Wc arc authorized and requested to announce the name of P.8.
