Theatre parties from Mouticello and other adjaccut towns, are expect ed to come up Saturday night to ai- tend the performance of “Under the Gas Light.” All About Interest. Mh9 Editor: iph e elec on is over, and the ex- “citemeL'tg^w^S out of a heated po litical oiimpaigD 1)88 80 ,ar eubs!dcd 89 to allow people to think calmly and dispassionate^ about P ublic “ aUers - I propose to take advantage of this lull to bring to the attention of your readers, especially the farmers, a few things which,in my: opinion, not only invite but demand scrutiny and close attention. My first proposition may ho stated as follows: cities, towns and corpora tions arc in a very prosperous con dition, while farmers, mechanics and country people generally are very much depressed. Why is this ? In answer to this .question it must ibe remembered, that as a class, fnrm- ■ors arc smpll dealers. Their traMac- itions and business matters in dollars and cents, while othefCIasses of the country deal in thousands and hundreds of thousands of dollars, and when these latter deal with each other and use each others money for specu lation purposes, they do it at n rale of four or five per cent, interest, and sometimes even less than that. But when they-deal with a farmer «jy mechanic, yiey require him to pay eight per cent, interest, and as much moic as they can squeeze out of him. The United States Government, when they raise money* for their pur poses, make their bonds payable ten, twenty or thirty years after date, at four or five per cent, interest per annum, payable semi-annually. But when the National Bank or other money corporations who arothe le* gitimato offspring of tho National Banking system undertake to oblige the farmer, they are met by a res triction in their charter which pro* vents them from obligiug tho farm- . era, because the security he offers is }Stnd. While this iniquitous conduct *oaitbD part of the National Bank will file .conceded by tho officials of the institution, they will tell you, you are jiajupered by the charter of their in stitution 8nd cannot help you. Now fir * be vpmedy for these troubles. Yo.ur ; cotton, corn and oats is your own. Maybe you can live, without selling at the monopo list's price. Mnyboypu cannot. But if your extremities are »ucb that you cannot live without yielding to tho demands of the money kings, you must go under, nnd fake tho chances of living or starving as tho case may Ira. The farmers* will have control of tho next Legislature and they can do much if they will, to checkmate the money kings. Suppose • they pass law to make the legal rate of interest on contracts the same the money kings charge each other, (say five or six per cent.) and also enact that when inoro than that is charged or bargained for, it shall work a for feiture ot principal and Snterest, Under tho operation of such a law, money would be os cheap he^ in the South as it is iu the North, und the farmer would have some chance to get money iu tho spring of the year « uy his fertilizers and supplies for i at a very much lower, pric" than he hns to pay when he buys on a credit, This high rate of interest (seven or eight per cent) allowed by the laws of Georgia, is injury to the fanner, which the allianco ought to correct, when ever they have the power to do so. Iu my next I will bring attention to. another evil which I think the al liance eughtto look after. Cotton, The First Play of the Season vThe famous sensational play “Under the Gaslight” will be produced at the opera house on Saturday night, under the direction of that excellent Director, Mr, Authur Rehan. We can safely say that “Under the Gaslight” will be produced in an admirable manner. The play is one of the best ever writ ten, and has never been done properly sincei's original production. The elements comprising the drama, are those of a strong and powerful kind, holding the audience by its thril ling interest, from the beginning to the end. The play is constructed after the populir model, which capti vates the audience, aha not unfre- quenity levies ?. tear from the eye of the more sympathetic spectator. Yet, with all its seiiousness, and inferential lessons of morality, and honorable manhood, it is never dull, or distres sing in its results. For a combination of cITecis in high and low hie, it has no equal on the stage, embracing ag it .does the elements of society, romance, eccen'riclty, and the varying vicissi tudes of life incident to the plot ar.d the journey it depicts, comiuning al ways natural and seldom 'dull, and pas sing from the most affecting scenes of hovel life in ihe metropolU to the most thrilling events of higher life. The scenic effects are startling and ef fective, and beautiful in the extreme. Tr.e company is an admirable one. Clever songs and specialties, and al together, a splendid production ot ‘•Undtr the Gashght”‘may be looked for. Chicago is going to have a flying machine ready by the time the World’s fair opens. It looks as if the inventor would have plenty of time to perfect his machine, * • Will tite next legislature as usual ad journ over for a summer session ? The body will deserve well of the peo ple if they will comply with the Con stitution cn Jfeis point. You Will Do the SamoThtng.
