“Under the Gaslight.”
‘•Under the Gaslight”— though
some of the younger generation may
not know it—is the pioneer of the
class of.mclodrama, of which it is one
of the best. It is oJd-time, simon-
pure, catch the-audience-and-carry-it*
away melodrama, and as such it was
given a hearty welcome last night,
DeGive’s was well filled, and the
nlrong points of “Undqr the Gaslight"
received applause that wrs vociferous.
The company presenting the play
was as a whole a strong one. Mr.
Arthur Rehan seems somewhat out
of place as manager of a melodramatic
attraction, but so, too, was Mr. Daly,
who made his hundreds of thousands
of. dollars out of this same play, but
as iu the delightful comedies Jie has
presented heretofore, Mr. Rehan has
gathered together people well suited
to the various roles. Mr. Harry
Hatto, a familiar figure in Mr.
Rchau’s companies, is there; Mr.
Will Owen, one of the very best of
the younger actors on the stage, is
another strong * member of the com
pany ; Mr. Crosser, Senator * Frank
Bell, and several other clever gentle
men ; Miss Emily Kean, a charming
and exceedingly clever soubrette; Miss
Jeremy and Miss Visclaire arc all
actresses*)! merit.
Mr. Harry Hatto, as Byke; Mr.
Owen as Roy Traffojd, and Miss Kean
are worthy of the most prominent
mention. Mr. Hatto, an .“old-timer"
to a certain extent, adds Byke to a
number of roles cleverly filled. Mr.
Owen, handsome ns ho is clever, has
in all that he has undertaken proved
himself an actor of extraordinary
merit, a student in his profession,
always conscientious in his work, os
he is comprehensive in his interpreta
tion of the characters. He is a young
m,an who has already been heard
from, and though his pnrt lost night

CARPET DEPARTMENT.
This needs no introduction,
every one knows that Wolff’s
is the place to buy carpets
playing anything new, he brought
out all thero was there. Miss Kean
is a decidedly clever soubrette, Miss
Jeremy is clever and capable, Miss
Vhlaise, too, deserves mention, and
the company as a whole is sufficiently
strong.” _

Augusta Chronicle.
Mr. Mitchell’s friends hope that the
fact that he was a gallant Confederate
soldier, staining Chicamauga’a field
with his blood, will not militate
against him. His record as a soldier
is not his only recommendation. He
is a fine parliamentarian, in sympathy
with the toiling masses, a man oi
broad and liberal views, a typical
Georgian, devoted to the state’s and
the people’s best interests; as a demo
crat, he is all wool and five quarters
wide, and has the courage of his con
victions. He would adorn tho posi
