The Alliance journal, ihe organ of the order in Alabama, has been giving the bfethern some wholesome advice,' ! *ih whiCTfffie danger of depjrong frdin the otigmal objects of the order, ii shown. It says: “ Ihe Farmers’ Alliance was organ' ized for agricultural purposes: at least a latge majority oi the fanners of Ala batna when they joined the Alliance believed it existed for the purpose of building up the agricultural interest, and nothing else; but instead oi being directed for this purpose, we have per mitted a few narrow minded men and office seekers to direct it for purposes other than agriculture, and it is our duly to take the organization out from under the influence of this class of people and place it in charge of men who have agricultural interest, whose administration will subserve the pur- LARGE -AND— SCREENS. Governor Gordon is receiving some cowardly stabs, in certain quarters. It is said that Wesleyan Female Col lege refused fiftv pupils, for the pres ent year, on account of room. How many Calvinists will there be in the Georgia legislature ? an important question. General Gordontas been true to the people of Georgia. They should now be true to him. The men who followed Gordon mid the smoke of battle, should not stand idly by and see him slaughtered. And we no not believe they will. Alter the smoke of the Senato.rship has cleared away, some men in Geor gia will find themselves*not in a very enviable position. A dav of reckon ing will come. In his speech at Talbotton last Friday, Colonel Moses, the demo cratic nominee for congress in this district, in answer to a question pro pounded by The West Georgia News, eaid that he was not in favor of the sub-treasury bill in its present shape, but wanted something to relieve the farmers.—Ex. Regular returns have been received from 105 counties. The first amend ment voted for, in regard to extend ing the provisions of the pension law, has a majority in these 105 counties of 40,316. The other amendment has a ma jority of 25,540; with twenty seven counties to bear from. ers, who will command the respect of every member of the Alliance and all classes in Alabama. We 'do not want men as leadets who are going to run the Alliance for the purpose of boost ing themselves into office. The Alliance should not be used or This is directed in the interest of any man for aoything, but for the whole organiza tion ; and no member should be per mitted to use it for private gain or pol itical preferment, and when this be comes the rule of the order we will rid the organization of that class of meo who are in the Alliance for private gain and political aggrandizement. ' The farmers of Alabama need an organization, not to tear down other interests, but to build up our own; and whatever grievances we may have we will present them in an intelligent and logical manner, and we will have the influence of ever/ man in Alabama who Iovcb right and fa : r play. A few members of the Alliance that have done most of the speaking and writing for the last three or four months have im pressed the public with the idea that the Alliance is opposed to every other interest in the State and regards every other class as enemies. Now, whether there'is any foundation in this impres sion or not, it does exist, and it is the There are about twenty counties in Georgia that get more money from tbe .common school fund than they pay into the treasury as taxes. In other words there are at least that many counties an expense and a bur den to the state. Breckenridge’s Life Attempted. l#riTLE Rock, Ark., Oct. 8—Private information has been received to day from a very responsible source that an attempt was made to assassinate ex- Congressman C. R. Breckinridge Monday night at Center Ridge, Con way county. He is conducting his canvass lor re-election, and while he was speaking a cap was snapped at his back, outside the window, where a large crowd had gathered. He com pleted his speech, however, and on his return to his hotel Mr. Normao, a cit- iz.-n of this place, was knocked down -rom behind with a slung shot. Settlement of the Trezevant Claim. Atlanta. Here is what | he says of Governor Gordon: “If I should ask you to name the man who, more than any other Geor gian, living or dead, has filled your ideal of virtuous chivalry, lofty and unselfish patriotism, and unflinching fealty to principle, there would bo but one response. Every mind’s eye would instantly turn and fix itself upon that veteran soldier and states man, who did not falter in the times which tried men’s souls, and who has been loyal in the last degree to every responsibility with which his loving and confiding countrymen have clothed him. But behold him to-day, tiaduccd and maligned, held up to ridicule and reprobation, among the people who have known him best and loved him most. But his is not an exceptional case.” Aldrich & Morse, Proprietors. June. 18 lyd&w. The Palace Mania. The latest thing in the palace lino is the hay palace. Before long, no doubt, some enterprising Western state will come to the front with a a pumpkin palace; Georgia, catching the idea, will erect a watermelon palace, and Kansas will illustrate the prosperity of its agriculture with a graud farm mortgage palace.
