Several gentlemen in the eity yesterday, after reading his article, pulled out their watches and compared notes, and they found that thastatem*-* ' g a correc t one, though few people know that such a use can be made of § tin-jo pjece. Ii’ollow the following rules, and you will be eon vinced that the watch is a perfectly correct compass: "Point the hour to the sun and the south is exactly half way between the hour and the figure XII on the watch. For instance, supposo that it is 4 o’clock. Point - the hand indi cating 4 to the sun and U on the watch is exactly south- Suppose that it is 8 o'clock, point the hand indicating to the sun, and the figure X on the watch is due south. He seemed surprised that 1 didn’t know what he thought was agftmmpp, every day feet. Since returning, I have asked a number of SavannahiaLs. and have the first one to find yet wfco know tk«t bjg watph could be used as a compass.” Quite a Decline. Washington, Oct. 10.—The Octo ber statistical returns of the Depart 1 ment of Agriculture report a material decline in cotton prospects. The fall in the general per centage is from 85.5 to 80. Tbe State averages are os follows: Virginia, 92; North Caro lina, 91; South Carolina, 83; Georgia, 82; Florida, 81; Alabama, 80; Missis sippi, 76; Louisiana, 83; Texas, 77; Arkansas, 80; Tennessee, 83. The largest decrease has been in Tennes see, Mississippi, Arkansas and Louis iana, in the fertile and productive bot tom lands of the Mississippi Valley. The' cause is too much rain. The ex cess of moisture, coupled with the lack of sunshine and reduced tempera lure delays the openipg aud causes immature bolls to drop,. and full grown ones to rot, and induces sprout ing of the seed. The came cause dis- colormtho open cotton near the ground and discharges the coloring matter of the bolls staining the fiber. The value of the crop will be somewhat reduced by the discoloration. The high ex pectations of the early season were re duced by the early droughts, and later more seriously by more or less con tinuous rains from North Carolina to Eastern - Texas. In some Southern districts there is some complaint of the boll worm, with little mention of caterpillars. Effectiveness of ic«cc- tickles when persistently applied frequently attested. H.
