“Cotton” Blooms out Again
Mr Editor:
This week I have to say that the
expenses oi Government in this coun
try are too greet. Mora loses are
collected than ought to be, and those
that are collected, are not collected
out of the right things
Government of course means there
must be come officials, and they must
be paid for their services. But
collecting the money for that purpose,
due regard ought to be. paid to the
services of the agent. If I plow and
hoe all day tor fifty, cents a day, why
should Government say that?
njan who works the same length
time io ap office, where ho docs not
have to perform manual labor, but
simply exercises his mind and hand
in the shade, should be paid four or
five dollars a day. I don’t see the
justice of tho thing, the way it now
works. And I want the suffering
public to liok, into it and apply the
remedy.
The Governor gets soveral thous
and dollars a year as salary, and
splendid mansion to live in, and yet
it is said he does not get enough to
support his office decently. Cnpt.
don’t you think you could live luxuri
ously ancj elegantly on the salary ho
gets? Does he work nny border than
you? You work nil day and half
tho night to run your paper, and
while l do not know what you make
for your day and night labor. I ven
ture to say your income is but os n
.drop io the bucket, compared with
his. I know that the incomo of the
farmer is but a drop in the bucket as
compared with his.
The members of the Legislature
get four dollars a day. What for?
and mileage besides. What for?
The ordinary members of the Legis
lature is a mero cypher, except when
his vote is wanted for some bill. The
moneyed corporations of the Stale
givo him a free ticket over nil the
r^il roads of the State, and he rides
about all over the State, and all he
has to do is to pull out of his pocket
a free pass, and he is hail fellow well
met every where.
■*» his all right—Tell mo farmers
and alliance men?
If you control the Legislature, wbat
are yon going to do about this matter,
Will you let it stand as it is, or will
you find some remedy, for this iniqui
tous fraud.
I do not propose to suggest a reme
dy. All I want to do, is to call your
attention to the subject, and see if you
cannot suggest some remedy by which
the labor and services rendered by of
ficials, shall bear a proper relation to
the amount the tax payers have to
farnisb, I shall be disappointed in
you it you do not.
Passing now from the executive and
legislative bodies of the government,
I ask what of the judiciary ? How
much of the year does the judge oj the
Superior court devote to the busi
ness of his office?
Think about it now and see for
yourselves. The judge gets a big sal
ary, has a free pass, and bis labors
which I admit are important, are by
no means in accordance with tho
common laborer's salary. The judge
works in his office with his mind and
pen. You work in tho fields with the
hot sun shining upon your head all
day. The judge spends his time and
talents unraveling the intricacies of tho
l$iW, as made by lawyers, and about
