And there is a familiar name on tho mar gin, one which brings up a Hood of reminiscenses. The uamts is “Peter Lindsay.” Ill memory’s mirror, we see, again, tho sturdy old Scot, rugged in his in tegrity ; true to his friends; express ing his opinion of men and things in his own vigorous manner—and with a force which never left the listener in any doubt as to his position or mean ing,. He scorned ambiguity and half way means and measures. God never made a. more honest man than “Uncle Peter,” as he w as famil iarly ca’led. And, notwithstanding h>s lapses, when tho Great A-cbitcct makes up and completes his bu’’ding in the skies, Peter Lindsay will not be rejected. • He will be found both tried and true, fit materin! for the Master Workman, Up there, purified by the fierco fires of this world, chastened by declining years, the old man, erect, with his de- formity'gone, and with an honest face beaming with celestial glory, will walk tho golden streets of the New Je-usa- lotn, and chaut praises to Him who sitteth ou tho throne. May God in His mercy kindly temper the bleak winds of Scotland to the old man, as he goes down the last slope in l'fe ; and receive him, when stepping on tho other shore, to a home in heaven. Listen for the stentorian tones of Shcrifi Hurst, as he cal's, “O yes, O, yes, the honorable superior coort Qt Thomas county is now open,’’ at 10 o’clock, to-morrow morning, “Jurors pleaso come iuto oourt,” &c. L. - B. ~ M. ■ H. OUJt COUNTRY CHAT. To the lattice in the country: I am anxious to have a portion of your trade. I know from experience that the daily routine of your busy lives prohibit any close attention to the ever-changing fashions and styles of millinery, and yet yon wish to wear os nice and well trimmed hats as any one, Othor* may not feel able or disposed to pay a big price for what really need not cost as much as is generally asked of country ladies, because they are not so well posted in qunlity, prices, etc. I will take pleasure in dealing with you in a straight-forward, candid way, so as to deserve and retain your con fidence and trade. You will receive the latest, newest styles, the best and tastiest trimming at tho lowest price it is possible to sell for. I do not pretend to sell at cost, or beloiV cost. I am not in business £or that purpose, but no one will sell you goods, atfirct price, as low as I do.| When you visit town drop in at my store and make yourself at homo anyway. Always glad to see you whether you buy from me or not. Mrs. Jennie* Carroll. Resembles Monte Cristo. “Herrainie or The Cross of Gold" was played in Charleston Wednesday night, and tho world of that city has the following to say of the play and players: The play and the principa' playcis remind one of James O'Neil’s Monte Cristo; the first and lost acts especial ly. Jn Monte Cristo O’Neil is a jolly, loving sailor; in Hcrminie Rcdmund is a jolly, loviDg soldier; in the last act Monte Cristo settles Danglars in a duel with smUll swords; Paul Du rand does the same for Phillipe d’Arvifie in Hcrminie. And there are other things which remind the auditor of the Dumas idea. The play is a good one; thrilling in many of its passages and effects, and is calculated to stir up patriotic feel ing. It was well handled last night. Of course Ml Redmund and Mies Lieb were the most interesting char acters. Mr. Redmund ha3 the bear ing of n soldier, coupled with an ap preciation of his role which fits him to present it in a roanncAo make the most of it. Miss Lieb is versatile and pretty. She created a good im pression at first, and it grew as the play proceeded. The other mem bers of tho company did admirably. The play was a success; the seats were all filled, and the managers and audience wero happy. WANTED. A set of hooks to write at night. I’ric molerate. Iioo’t Kkbi-eii, ■ltd This Office.
