would stop after Rube Burrows was
Stilled.
Henry M. Stanley, the great Afri

Mr. Ben Allen, editor of the Ber

Mr. Allen on this recognition of his

Mrs. Felton is a mighty smurf woman.
The Savannah Daily Tiraee perti

and many a poor man and illy clad
woman and child will shiver with
cold in order that some millionaire
manufacturer may be “protected."
Governor-elect Northen advises
Legislators to etand by their pledges

The assassination ot the chief of po
lice in New Orleans, has created a
sensation. A band of Italians are said
to have conspired to kill him, and
now threaten the life ol the Mayor. A
few of the banded assassins hung to

TheJ Mtfcon Evening News says:
‘‘It is announced that the World's
Fair committee are going to remove
the birthplace of Lincoln from Ken
tucky and lake it to Chicago as a part
of the great exposition. If they can
get the Lookout Mountain, the
grounds of Andersonville prison and
the original bloody shirt the show will
be about complete.”
Id one of his recent speeches, Mr.
McKinley admitted that his tarifT
meant a general increase of prices.
He said:
"The whole system of cheap thing*
is a badge of poverty, for cheap mer
chandise means cheap men, and cheap
men mean a cheap country, and that
la not the kind our fathera bnilded.
Furthermore, it ia not the kind their
mean to maintain.”

Why Jews aro Masons.
Macon Neva.
A friend afew days since asked ut
the question,. “.Why is it that so many
Jews join the Masonic Order It is
a fact that seldom you find a Jew that
ts not a member of the Order, and an
intelligent Ma-or.—one that is posted
in the riluils and understands the
meaning ol symbols used in Masonry
—ihe reason why Jews are friends ol
the Order is well understood. There
is not a symbol used in a properly fur
nished lodge that is not of a Jewish
origin. All the legends and ceremo
nies used in conferring the var ous de
grees are taken from Jewish history
and tradition. All the proper images
or emblems are taken from the Bible
(a book entirely written by Jewish au
thors), which alone contains the an- Window Shades on Spring Rollers 35 cts.
thenlic records of ancient masonry.
It was to Moses, the Jewish law giver,
that the first formal revelation was
made of God’s sacred name at the
burning bush, that it might be a pass
word to induce the Israelites to be
lieve that he had been sent for their
deliverance. This incident is typified
in the Royal Arch degree, and so on
through the various degrees of Mason
ry. The formula, the language used
in conferring the degrees, the legends
and the meaning of the ceremonies
are all obtained from the Jews. The
Jews are a remarkable people. Scat
tered as they are over the world, they
never become 'homogeneous with the
people with whom they come in con
tact either by marriage or otherwise.
They remain distinct in race and relig
ion, and in the midst of the most fiery
persecution, the most cruel ostracism,
ever remain faithful to the religion ot
their ancestors. Ihey do not, like
other people, lose their identity by
adopting the religion and customs of
nations among whom they dwell, but
cling as tenaciously to their race and
religion t as did their ancestors under
the magnificent reign pf King Solomon
(the founder of masonry) over (Jyee
thousand years ago. Is it then any
wonder that a people who arc so devo
ted tojthcir race and religion, and hold
in such loving veneration the tradi
tions and history of their people,
should love and support an order
based upon these traditions and that
history ?
At a meeting of passenger agents
in Cincinnati an agreement was reach
ed as to Florida excursion rates this
winter. The rates agreed upon were
substantially the same as those of last
year, or 2 .cents per mile each way
fropi northern parts to Gplahan, Lake
City and Jacksonrille. South of tfces*
points the barring rates will be added.
The Florida roads refuse to join in the
reduction, and, on the other hand, )yill
raise their rate this year to about 5
cents per mile. They p!#ad the pov
erty net, and that they do not get a
chance at the public but half the
year.
The Florida roads aro making
mistake in putting up rates. It will
keep .them poor. Low rates iuduces
travel.
