The Pear Crop of Thomas Coun
ty, Ga.
Thomasvii.le, Ga , )
Oct. 13th, 1890. J
[Written for the Truekcr and Lumberman.]
Thomas county, the home of the
LeConte, has encouraging statistics to
show to all interested in the South’s
progress. .
The last spring freeze, with.its de
structive affects over wide spread
acres, did not fail to reach the L»-
Conte, and reach it too when it was
full of bloom and succulent spring
growth. For a while after the freeze
it appeared that -he dilapidated Le<
Conte would fail to produce a crop
ol fruit this year. But the LeConte
with all of its vigor, endurance $nd
power of rccoyery soon began to look
as promising as ever, and the blooms
began to appear, and a crop was pro.
duced notwithstanding the mild winter
and late freeze.
The wide awake farmers of Thomas
years since saw what a bonanza tne
LeQ^ptc was to the South, and the
return of this years fruit coming i i at
such a season go to prove it, beyond
contradiction,, to other sections of the
South that have not taken advantage
of its benefits.
It is estimated that the ciop of
Thomas county must have, netted
nearly $60,000. Some orchards did
remarkably well, others very little,
Capt. E. M. Smith sold $1,300 worth
of pears from a place he tried to sell
last winter at $2,000 and for which
he would have taken $r,5oo had the
same been offered.
These returns came in at a season
when, without theijv business would
have been very dull and farmers
scarce of change. The LeConte crop
which is for the market dHR July
and the first of August, is si^plement-
ed by the Kieffer pear which matures
last of August and September. The
LeConte is grown from cuttings and
the Kieffer ftom cuttings and on the
LeConte stock. Any one wishing to
try either from cuttings, or wishing
trees for an orchard either in small
lots or large quantities, will communi
cate with me.
Cotton farmers who hive not been
getting returns for their produce but
once a j ear, are the ones who should
investigate this matter and not let
capitalists reap the whole benefit of
the natural and rich fruits of the
South.
Yours truly,
B. W. Stone.

A Good Day’s Work.
Weakness of itself is not a disease. It is
however a most distressful symptom- Alas!
how many wearily drag themselves about,
every effort giving them distress,- existing
without any of the pleasurable sensations of
r obust health. Are you in this condition!
Why! There is no excuse for feeling mean
aru’. miserable. Remove the cause of your
illetrcgs, which undoubtedly is a slate of
blood impurity nnd a disor. cd syitcm.
IIow ? Why by doing as others have done.
G. W. Chandler, Red Fork, Ark , wri tes:
“I was so weak that it was only with great
effort that I could do anything. I used sev
eral bottles of Botanic Blood Balm, and can
now do n good day's work."
“Able to do a good day’s work 1” Is there
not something sweet and refreshing in that
expression! Strength to vigorously do this or
that. Strength that is only overcomo by
nntural fatigue- Strength that when ex
pended, is by rost nnd nature fully renewed
