All About Sewing Machines.
New York, Oct. 27, 1890.

Who invented this wonderful labor
.sreecniPTiov kath. saving machine? I do not know.
i-Rnthprui, . . . $5 00 Some claim it for Mr. Singer; others
■| 1 00 for Mr. Howe. At the present time
we have in the market, Singer, Howe,
Wheeler & Wilson, Wilcox & Gibbs,
Domestic, Weed, Household and some
others. Which of all these is the best
I do not kuow ; and if I did, it would
be unfair to say, when all are so good.
Wonderful improvements in all these
machines have been made during the
past fifteen or twenty years. One
wonderful improvement was made by
Mr. Howe, (and which all have adopt
ed,) viz: by which a locked stitch
could be made in the fnhric, and pre
vents raveling.
At the present time, Indies (or at
least those not unwilling to work,)
make their own dresses, and most of
the clothes worn by the male members
of their families, 011 these machines.
I have heard tell of a machine in Chi
cago into which if a pig is thrown in
at one end, it comes out iu sausages
at the other in a few minutes. This
is not more wonderful thnu what is
done by a sewing machine- You throw
a piece of cloth at it and with a little
manipulation by the hands and feet,
and out comes a beautiful garment.
It not only sews, blit it hems, braids,
fells, gathers, quilts, makes button
holes, andldontknow what else.
About twenty years ago I sent to
my daughter up in Vermont a Wheel
er & Wilson machine ; not beeause I
thought it the best, but because I hap
pened to know the proprietor. On a
recent visit to her I saw that the ma
chine was worn out, and almost use
less. I sent her a new one. On its
receipt she wrote me:
Last night my pretty machine came
and it is a beauty and does
work to perfection. It is so unlike
my old one, and has so many improve
ments that it hardly seems right to
have the Dame of Wheeler & Wilson
upon it. 1 seamed up some long
seams in a pair of pants, and nearly
ma ie a shirt. You are the best father

To the Democrats of Thomas
County.
On the fourth day of next month
an election 0! a congressman from the
set otd district comes off. At a dem
ocratic conven ion, held in Albany,
Hon. H. G. Turner was unanimously
renominated lor the 52nd congress.
In view of the arbitrary, unjust and
partisan rulings of Reed and the re
publican leaders, it is highly essential
that our representatives should go to
Washington backed by a rousing big
majority. It has developed, only
within the past few days, that Turner
is to have opposition. Every true
democrat in Thomas county should
turn out and vote. Give onjday, or
a part of it, to the cause of good gov
ernment. Thomas county democrats
have never in the past failed to do
their duty ; and they should not fail
now. It will not do to say. “O, Tur
ner will he elected anyhow.” There
is danger in this course, and most sc
rious dinger. Let us, as life-long
democrats, lock shields, as we have so
oilen done in the past political battles
fought in this country, and victory will
again perch on our banners. Votes
count. A man owes something to his
home and his government, and he
should be willing to turn out and vote.
In union there is strength, A few men
cannot carry an election. Thomas
county can, and should, give Turner
the largest majority of any county in
the district. Let us do it. Apathy
is the only danger ahead of us. This
should be overcome. Self-confidence
is a good thing, hut when it keeps a
voter away from the polls, it is a had
dung. The fact that our candidate is
certain to be elected, should not les
sen his legitimate vote. Then turn
out on the fourth day ol November
and give the nominee of the party a
full vote in the iron ribbed, unterrified,
unflinching democratic county of
Thomas.

Georgia Convicts.
The biennial report of the peniten
tiary department is now complete.
It covers a period of two years—since
Oct. 1, 1888.
During that time 2511 convicts
have been handled, by far the largest
number ever recorded for the tame
length of time. There were in the
penitentiary Oct. 1, 1890, 1694 con-
victs—1478 colored male, 168 white
male, 48 colored femnlc.
Not a Bingle white woman is now in
the Georgia penitentiary.
About 10 per cent, of the 1694 con
victs are serving life sentences. Col
quitt, Dawson, Milton, Town3 apd
White counties have no representa
tion in the penitentiary population.
Towns and Colquitt had nouo wheu
the last report was made, two years
ago.
Chatham furnishes more convicts
than any other county—190.. Fulton
comes next with 109. Jt is an in
variable rule that the rural or agri
cultural counties contribute fewer
convicts than their proportion by
population. Chatham alone, for ex
ample, has as many convicts as 25
rural counties. The counties of
Chatham, Bibb, Fulton, Richmond
and Muscogee contribute more than
29 per cent, of the entire number of
convict*, showing, as Assistant Prin
cipal Keeper Shubrick remarks, that
the large cities arc becoming centers
of crime as well as of population,
education and enlightenment.
