Resolutions of Condolence by

At times, when all seems bright
and beautiful, and we are fondly ho
ping for tho attainment of some cher
ished object, a somber shadow passes
across our pathway, leaving its im
press upon our hearts. The cup of
bliss, to which we had raised and nl
most touched our lips, is suddenly
dashed to the ground, and our bright
dreams nnd fond hopes nre shattered.
Life is made up of bitter and sweet,
of light and shade: and a deeply
darkened shadow settled over tho hap
py home of our beloved Superintend
ent and his wife, when the reaper,
death, entered its portal, and with
sickle keen, cut down in all her beau
ty and lovely innocence, their sweet
little daughter, Sopbronia. There-

The posters for Amy Lee, in the
Clipper, was put up yesterday. Ihe
Clipper is a drama with plenty of
humor all through the various scenes.
The average audience likes to laugh
and at tho same time be interested in
the plot of the play, and the Clipper
is a pleasing combination of the two.
Secure your sents as soon as the box
sheet opens, for it is safe to say that
it will draw one of the largest audien
ces of the season. The Hueears will
make every effort to make the bene

This spectacular play was presented
before a good audience at the opera
house on Wednesday evening. It
was a grandfantasticfairyscene,which
presented itself to the audience.
Mortals, and immortals nymphs,
sprites, gnomes, demons and beauti
ful women fairly bewildered the
lookerson. The grand ball masque
bqliet, in which a dozen or so airily
attired females took part, was oue of
the features of the evening. The
horizontal bar performance was the
best ever seen on tho stage. The two
boys in dance nnd song, and in their
comicalities, was one of the best fea
tures) of the evening. The smaller ot
the two appears to be a natural born
comedian. They were called back
again and again. That little fellow,
if he lives, will rival Sol Smith Rus

A special to the News from Atlanta
dated yesterday, says;
It is almost certain that Gen. Gor
don will be tho next United States
senator. The fight began last evening
and was virtually whipped to-night,
and credit is due to a knot of gallant
alliancemcn, led by Read of Putnam
and Harper of Carroll, ably soconded
by Senator Todd of this district, who
stood up for principle in the face of
overwhelming odds in the caucus, and
at last triumphed. Not only have
they pretty surely whipped the sena
torial fight, but one of much more
moment to the peoplo of Georgia and
to tho democracy itself. Tho alliance
caucus will not, with closed doors and
in secret, virtually decide who shall
hold tho public offices of the state and
what her laws shall bo. Yet it was
thus ["gravely threatened not more
than twenty-four hours ago.
’( here are so many highly gratifying
features connected with the overwhelm
ing defeat of the republiians, that it
is impossible to enumerate them all,
but we gladly stop the press to an
nounce that dirty mouth Jo Cannon,
ot Ill’s, has been defeated. Ladies
can occupy galleries in the Capitol at
Washington, without hearing vulgar
langaugc on the floor of the next house.
“Lige,” wearily spoke up Benjamin,
as he laid the morning paper down;
"is there no balm in Gilead?”
"Yes, sire,” quoth Ligc, "we have
Tom Reed and the tariff.”
Cleveland’s tariff talk, while it de
feated him two years ago, is bearing

We arc turning out more, car-

the assortment to select from,
and the prices are right.
We advise you to purchase
your carpets now, for as sure as
two and two make four—you
will pay more two months hence.
The McKinley tariff bill has
caused an advance in wool, and
it will be impossible for carpel
dealers to duplicate their stock
at former prices. HaturaUy it
will cause an increase to the
consumer. Our advice is plain.
We have only the following
inducements to offer—first the
largest stock—second lowest pri
ces—third thatcarpets and rttgs
are cheaper notv than they will
probably ever be again.
And Michigan goes democratic by
a big majority. But why enumerate
any further. The whole country ap
pears to have gone democratic.

two on joint ballot, in the New York
