But didn't Turner lay out “Brer” Mattcson ? The entire republican party was paralyzed on Tuesday. Of course Col. Bill Harris, of Worth, was elected clerk of the sen ate. The people couldn’t swallow the force bill. They spewed it out on Tuesday. The democrats will enjoy their Thanksgiving dimier. The turkey will taste mighty good. Gallant, game Florida comes to the front with flying colors, and a sol id domocratic delegation in congress. The democrats should give Tom Reed some of his medicine, in the 52nd congress. It would be mighty bitter. Little Benny Harrison went to In diana to vote. His friend and ally, ‘ Bill Dudley, found it convenient to stay out of Indiana on election day. That combination against Mark Hardin and Charley Hansell didn t work. They are both important fac tors in running the Georgia legisla ture. The excursion rates oilered tourists - z going from uortheru points to Florida went into effect November 1st. The increase of passenger traffic has al ready been felt by local roads. m .♦> —■ •• The election Tuesday should have closed Jo Cannon’s dirty mouth. If ho is reflected it will show what kind "of a blackguard his constituents pre fer to represent them in congress. . Gnyte MeLcndon never telegraph ed a more welcomo message to Tbom* asville, or anywhere else, than the one announcing the election of Bob Mitch ell to the presidency of the Senate. The democracy of South Carolina Stood by the regular nominee, Mr. Til- man. The party cannot afford to split in the Palmetto State. Nor in any other Southern state, for that matter. Wonder how Ben Harrison will en joy his Thanksgiving dinner ? Prob ably he feels so bad about the result of Tuesday’s election, that he will not issue any proclamation on the subject. Harrison has been blowing around calling an extra session of congress. The result of Tuesday’s elections has put a new phase on the situation. The little man in the white house will not call an extra session now. H-a r- 3-ly- ■ <«iai On Deoember 27th of this year, the twenty years’ lease of the Western and Atlantic Railroad Company ex pires on the State road of Georgia, now known os the Western and At lantic. The lessees of tho road have piid during this time the sum of 8$,000,000, or almost three times the amount it would take to build and . equip the same road. The Nashville, Chattanooga and tit. Louis railroad bos leased the same road for twenty- nine years, taking possession the first day of January, 1891, and for this lease they pay 835,000 per month in advance, or a total of $12,180,000, mors than six times the amount it would QM it to build and equip it.— Chattanooga Time*. - Mrs. Lucretia McCann, probably the oldest white person in that sec tion of Georgia, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John W. Brooks, in Blakely, Oct. 30, 1890. The tie censed was born on July 30, 1797, being just three months over 93 years ot age at the time of her death. She was twice married, the latter time to Martin McCann, a soldier of the war of 1812 under Gen. Andrew Jackson and her numerous descendants arc scattered from Georgia to Texas, some of them probably of the fifth generation. The democrats will have a big working majority in the next house, tThe following members are mentioned ns the Speaker of the 52nd congress Charles F. Crisp, of Georgia ; W, D. Bynum, of Indiana; W. H. Hatch of Missouri; ‘‘Bill” Spriugcr. of Illinois ; Benton McMillin, < f Ten nessee ; Roger Q. Mills, of Texas McCreary, of Kentucky, and perhaps William L. Wilson, of West Vir ginia. The chances are that Charley Crisp will wear the honors. Planters will be greatly interested to know that a very handy machine tor picking cotton 1ms been invented, and the first bale picked by it was exhibited in Memphis last week. It it will do all that the inventor claims for it, the planter can, by its use, place himself in a much more independent position than he now is. He says it will do as much work ns fifty men. Should that prove true a large in crease in the cotton crop may hereaf ter be expected.—News. Many a young man has been misled by Bob iDgersoll’s advice: “if you have only a half a dollar,” said the eloquent infidel, “spend it like a prince.” This is well enough, but it should be recollected that a wise prince—such ns prince Bismarck— knows tho value of a half a dollar, and when ho spends it he gets his money’s worth in some shape or other. The proper utilization of the Bnmil things—the trifles of life—is the foun dation of success.—Atlanta Constitu tion. Some papers in Georgia did not seem to know that Senator Mitchell was in the race for president of the Senate. They woke up on Wednes day to find the wire grass Senator from tho 7th wielding tho president’s gavel in the Senate of Georgia. They could only rub their eyes and stare. Pattison, the game young democrat ol Pennsylvania, knocked the “stuffin’’ out of Quayism. When the Keystone State reverses her 80,000 republican majority, there must be something ex tremely rotten in Denmark; nay .rot ten in the republican party of Penn sylvania. Among the most pleasing features of tho great democratic tidal wave is the fact that New Hampshire has wheeled into the democratic col umn, and that old Grauny Blair'will bo relegated to private life. Tho Senate will know him no more for ever. The legislature will get down to work in a day or two. It is thought the session will not last longer than forty days. If a flood of local bills are introduced it will be difficult to finish up tho work within the time mentioned. Democracy is again triumphant. Tho lines aro formed, and the great battle of 1892 will be fought by the democratic party, fought with a dash and heroism which will challenge tho admiration of the whole country. Governor Merriam, of Minnesota, whose re-election is still in doubt, owns a ltfrotome winter home in Thomasvillc. Merriam may pull through, but his democratic opponent, Wilson, is right on his heels. McKinley, the author of the robber tarifi bill, has been snowed under. Every honest man in the country ahould rejoice at this. It is doubtful whether the legisla ture elected in Kansas will select Mr. Ingallt. He could be spared. F TJ E NIT TJKS, 175 BROAD STREET, MASTJRY HOTEL BUILDING.
