The southeastern corner of this state, comprising the counties of Stod dard, Scott, Mississippi, New Madrid. Pemiscott and Dunklin, must at one time had an immense population. No quarter of Missouri is so rich in buri al mounds covering the remains of previous races. Tumuli and funeral relics, comprising jars, bottles, vases and other objects of earthenware are to be found everywhere, even in the midst of the swamps. The colored people do a good busi ness in digging up these relics and selling them, but what they find is but a title of what they leave undisturbed. In one ridge, about ten miles from New Madrid, thero arc over 200 mounds, from 10 to 20 feet in diame ter, each probably containing remains and relics. They are not the remains of the present race of Indians, but of their predecessors, the mound builders, and arc interesting to the antiquarian for no other reason than that he knows nothing about them, and is freo to speculate concerning their origin and history.—St. Louis Globe Democrat. Cardinal Newman’s Hymn. From the Atlanta Journal. Although Cardinal John Henty New man died in the Roman Catholic Church, he was the son of a protest- ant, a Loudon hanker, and was educa ted at Trinity College, Oxford. Later on, at Oriel College, he was associa ted with the church poet, John Keble, and the f'tnmps Or. Whately. These associations probably led h.m to the ministry of tbe Church of England, and he was ordained in 1824. Three years later he became vicar of St. Mary's at Oxford, where his associa tion with Rev. Dr. Whately was con tinued, until in 1843, when he resign ed and after two years entered the Ro man Catholic church. Despite this tact he never lost the respect and love of his old proiestant friends, as t,e liv ed a life free from fanaticism and strife, anti especially pure and noble in its most important relations. In the hymn book of the Church of England, and the 1’ioicstant Episcopal church of America, can still be found his beautiful hymn, “Lead Kind.y Light,” which has made Cardinal Newman's name a household word. This hymn was written in 1832, during a home ward voyage front a continental tour, and was suggested by the becalming of the vessel in the bay of Genoa. At the request of a reader of the Journal we give below a correct copy of this meritorious composition: “LEAD, KISDLY LIOHT” ‘'In the duy- time be also led them with a eloud, and all the night through with the light of fire."—Bihle 1.
